Originally posted at 10 a.m.

Friends and former teammates of recently graduated Azusa High School football star Kendrec Lavelle McDade, 19, are mourning his death last Saturday night at the hands of Pasadena police.

A young man named Andrew Zarco Tweeted: "nooo this cant be.RIP my boy Kendrec Mcdade. it was an honor being able to play football with you."

McDade was reportedly gunned down around 11 p.m., after he attempted to rob a patron outside a taco truck at Orange Grove Boulevard and Summit Avenue.

The Pasadena Police Department tells the Pasadena Sun that McDade was possibly armed during the robbery, and that the two cops chasing him only opened fire after he reached for his waistband. However, the Sun reports that "as of Sunday afternoon police had not located a weapon in the area of the shooting."

McDade died from multiple gunshot wounds at 751 Sunset Avenue, according to the L.A. County Coroner's homicide report.

The victim was something of a star during his days on Azusa High's varsity football team. Online player profiles show him as a 5-foot-7, 160-pound cornerback and running back with an average of about 8 points per game. They also say the young footballer hoped to major in law after high school.

One shining moment from a match against Gabrielino High School in fall 2009:

After an Eagle drive ended in punt on fourth and a mile, running back Kendrec McDade broke loose on the first play up the middle and zig zagged 70 yards to cash in. McDade then pulled an interception that paved way to another Chavez-Ochoa connection for 34 yards and a 21-6 lead. McDade led all Aztec rushers with 93 on seven chances.

After graduating in 2010, McDade appears to have taken to YouTube, posting videos of himself eating fries and the like.

The exact details of his officer-involved death on Saturday night are still unclear. But here's what is known about the alleged stickup beforehand, again via the Pasadena Sun (we've contacted Pasadena police for more):

McDade was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Other officers later arrested a second suspect, a 17-year-old African-American male, [Lieutenant Phlunte Riddle] said. ...

Police received a call at 11:04 p.m. from a man who said he was driving in pursuit of two men who had taken items from his car as he visited a taco truck. The two had asked him to buy food and he had refused, Riddle said. When he return to his parked car he saw the two men inside and confronted them. One of the men flashed a silver or chrome gun and the man backed off, Riddle said.

kendrec mcdade football.jpg
Kendrec McDade via Twitter
Update, 6 p.m.: Lieutenant Riddle says that after two days of searching for McDade's alleged gun, investigators have yet to turn up a weapon.

"We've been back out and we have not been able to locate the gun," she says. And that's after both helicopters and bloodhounds combed the three blocks where the police chase went down.

Riddle adds that it "has not been determined" if perhaps McDade's 17-year-old accomplice was the one seen with a gun during the alleged robbery beforehand. She says "detectives have interviewed him," but the spokeswoman hasn't received a full briefing on how that interview went.

The 17-year-old was arrested Saturday on suspicion of murder -- McDade's murder. That's because, under California's felony-murder rule, if anyone dies during the commission of certain felonies, the felon gets an extra charge of murder. Even in the absence of malice.

The police shooting of Kendrec McDade has perhaps taken on a new level of scrutiny, given the national focus on the apparently senseless murder last week of young black man Trayvon Martin in Florida.

Another tragic angle is that McDade's family may not have known about his death when the media first started reporting it on Sunday.

Here's the police report in full:

On March 24, 2012 at 11:04 pm, Pasadena Police Officers responded to a call of an armed robbery that just occurred at Summit Avenue and Orange Grove Blvd. The victim followed the two suspects while calling the police on his cell phone. The suspects ran in different directions trying to evade the victim.

Two officers immediately arrived and observed one suspect running near Fair Oaks Avenue and Orange Grove Blvd. The officers pursued the suspect north on Sunset Avenue from Orange Grove Blvd and as they neared him, they observed his hands at his waistband. Fearing for their lives they fired multiple shots striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to local area hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

The second suspect was arrested in the immediate area without further incident. A command post was set up at Fair Oaks Avenue and Orange Grove Blvd. Pasadena Police Detectives and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Officer Involved Shooting Team responded to the scene and started their investigation. Los Angeles County Sheriff's bloodhound was called to assist with the evidence search.

So, he goes off to rob another and is killed in the process. When will the police not be a scapegoat for everyone's hatred??? They saw him reaching for his waistband... history should have told him to 1. NOT commit a crime and place himself in the predicament and 2. YOU DON'T put your hands anywhere else but UP!!! Why and HOW? are the police responsible? They HAD to respond to the ROBBERY that Mr. McDade WAS committing! Bad company corrupts good character> he should've stayed away from his hoodlum friend whom he was with! It's all wrong on his part, but all we hear is police bashing. I AM glad we have policemen and police women WHO will respond. I would hate to think that in AMERICA we have to hide and watch our backs against hoodlums who WILL ROB us given half the chance. WE NEED protection  because some WILL apparently attempt to violate OUR rights, freedoms, and maybe even kill US because they want to ROB us! The city better NOT pay a dime!

First this is a Very tragic and Sad event.  However, this will be yet another event that will turn into a "bad cop" and "racial thing" and the FACT that Kendrec McDade committed a FELONY with a convict as his accomplice will slowly go away and the Wrongful Death aspect will only be looked at.  Yep, watch the news friends, it will become replete with racial profiling, and the events that started the WHOLE MESS (Kendrec McDade and 17 year old convict Robbing someone) won't even be hinted at.  My heart goes out to the family of Kendrec, but this NEVER would have happened if he was TRULY a "good boy" and did not commit this crime.

First and foremost I'm a minority. So please make no assumptions about my race. While I find this death a tragedy that could have ended differently, I think this back and forth banter between supporters and haters counterproductive to any positive conclusion. It helps no one when cases are tried in a court of public opinion.

Having said that, let's look at what we do know. First any minority knows that running from the police and/or reaching for their waste-band is asking for trouble. Even if we say he ran because as a football star he felt he could get away from the police, why did he reach for his waste-band?

Second, what was he doing out there at that time? The truth is no matter what people may say even minorities know you're going to find trouble if you're somewhere you shouldn't be at night. I'm not saying he was guilty. We don't even know outside of the police statement if it's true that he reached for his waist. However we do know he was out there and when you're somewhere you shouldn't be don't be surprised if trouble finds you.

Having said that, I think it's important to know that despite all the claims on this site, no one except the police and Kendrec know what happened that night. Not the armchair detectives and not his family and friends. Anyone claiming they do is ignorant because if they did know why waste time here bickering when they could be providing valuable information to the FBI or some other law enforcement above their local authorities to see justice done.

This is a very difficult thing for me to digest. As a 56 year old black man, I have seen a lot of malice on the part of police departments. However, I have also witness a lot of heroic acts from the police department. We call they respond. They have a very difficult job & mistakes are bound to occur. Even deadly ones. They are brave men and women charged with protecting us. I don't know what happen that night, however, another unarmed young black man with a promising future has been gunned down. If this was a mistake the police should admit it and move on. If it was negligence on the part of the patrolmen the department should properly deal with it. Police officers desevre to get the benefit on the doubt, however, since they are entrusted with using deadly force they should also be held to a higher scrutinity. I hope in my heart that this turns out to be justifiable homincide, but my intelligences tells me this poor unforturnate soul was shot dead largely due to the color of his skin. We have a long way to go before justice and equality prevails throughout our land.

Sadly Kendrec will never be able to tell his side of the story. You cannot condemn him as a criminal - this is all based on allegations. You cannot condemn him as "an armed robber" - he was not armed, nor has a weapon been found! BTW has anyone checked to see if the person alleging the robbery in the first place ever even ID'd Kendrec after all this went down (on a dark street nonetheless)?!!! That probably will never be known. Not to mention, what about the "transient known to the area" (the Pasadena area this all happened in), who was arrested at 1:20am for an attempted car-jacking a few blocks away from this incident - could HE have been one of the perps and been trying to get out of Pasadena? The story just doesn't wash - Kendrec would have no reason to ask someone to buy him food (as has been reported), but a transient person would. I hope the NAACP gets the answers for Kendrec's family and friends - we know what a kind, quiet young man he was and will miss him dearly!

Marlena Martinez

I can almost guarantee that none of you calling him a criminal were there when this all transpired. He may have been robbing something out of that car he may not have.. regardless a beautiful person was murdered. He didn't have a gun and after two days of searching there still isn't any weapons found.

He was a young man with the rest of his life ahead of him. What happened is wrong. Flat out.

I pray that his mother never has to read or hear such ignorant things said about her child.

Louis Bricano
Louis Bricano

I don't know if McDade was involved in a robbery or burglary, or not.  However, he *might* have been, and if so, I don't think he qualifies as a "beautiful person", and also if he was, then he bore some of the responsibility for his own death.

Someone is actually mourning a suspect from an armed robbery?????  Get real, people.  Armed robbers are the worst of the worst of violent criminals.  They don't just steal, they use force and fear to steal.  Dangerous desperados.  The more of them we lose, the safer is our community.

 Very thoughtful commentary <snicker>

While it isn't certain, it would appear that your cousin was involved in criminal activity.  A death sentence is not the punishment meted out by the courts for robbery and burglary, but when someone commits crimes like that, anything can happen.  Your cousin's associate *does* have a criminal record, and was arrested for burglary after the McDade shooting.  The likelihood is that your cousin was a criminal, just one who hadn't yet been caught up in the justice system.</snicker>

Kendrec may well have been the lookout in the robbery.  His associate was arrested for burglary after the boy was shot.  Kendrec didn't live in the Pasadena Northwest neighborhood and didn't have any normal connection to it - what the hell was he doing there?

Cops are PARA-military, that's one of the reasons they carry 9mms instead of M-16s! As somebody who's been in war zones AND Pasadena, I can tell you the 'dena definitely is NOT like a war zone. I hate that this kid died, but do you really wanna live in a society where cops can't shoot at someone who reaches for their waistband during an altercation?

Good post. Thanks.

It is hard to know anything when you only see one side of the situation.

I keep coming back to - why did he steal from that car, though? Is it something that is common in your area?

I have lived in some shitholes, and have had some dodgy room-mates and so I know that sometimes things like lifting a carton of milk, a pack of rolls, a car radio, a set of tires, is no big thing - is that the situation here? Be honest, please.

I don't know - are the cops in the area known racists? Do the crime stats show a preponderance of white gun crime? Are young black men over-represented in violent crime figures?

Who knows what they would have done if Kendrec was white. Do you?

Was 10 bullets excessive? Hell yes. Two cops, multiple guns, backup on the way, one 5'7" youth - I would have thought there were other options than pulling a trigger at the first opportunity.

Was there any attempt to ascertain the situation? Doesn't sound like it.

Was it racist? I don't know - but I would suspect it was 'crimeist' - in other words, they were responding to a crime, not the person - they don't know the person, they know of the crime. Were they profiling based on his appearance? More than likely. Is that right? No it isn't, but it is the nature of their job in the place that they work.

I'm glad you chose to present your argument in a reasoned manner - as you may find surprising, people may actually agree with what you have to say. I certainly do.

Being white isn't necessarily a sure way into membership of the bigot club. No more than being black is. I have lived all over the world and can say, categorically, that bigots come in all shapes and sizes and colors.

Say there are a heck of a lot of white bigots, you'll get no argument from me. But it isn't their preserve. I've been punched for no other reason than my race. I've been called some shocking names for no other reason than my accent. That doesn't mean I now feel that every person the same color or religion or race or state of the guy that punched me is the same.

It's not nice to be prejudged about anything, but I can certainly sympathize with people who are on the receiving end of constant bigotry and racism. It must be hard to keep turning that cheek.

I hope this situation doesn't turn you against all white people - just like you, we are all different.

The Trayvon Martin shooting may well have been justified.  An eyewitness saw Zimmerman on his back with Martin punching him in the face and banging Zimmerman's head on the ground.  Zimmerman's face was bloody and battered, he had a cut on the back of his head, and he had wet grass stains on the back of his clothes.  There was an independant eyewitness that confirmed Zimmerman's version, and the physical evidence was consistant with Zimmerman's version of events.  Believe what you want, but the cops in Sanford did not just take Zimmerman's word for it.

There is no such thing as shoot to disable.  If they shoot, it's to drop the guy. The standard police shooting protocol is two in the torso and one in the head. Repeat until the suspect is down.

when did i pull the race card? what the hell, even though that obviously has something to do with this. look up any sociological or criminological study on police and it will show you that police have preconceived notions of different races and deal with suspects of different races in different ways. but that's not at all the point. this kid was running because simply put he didn't want to get caught. does that justify him being shot? and the fact that he didn't have a weapon on him, and these cops will get nothing. i wear a bumper sticker on my car proudly that reads "shoot at police." we give far too much power to cops, the fact that we train them in military tactics instills in them an idea that they are at "war" with the rest of society.

I am not familiar with ramarley graham case. Trayvon Martin was shot and murdered because he looked "suspicious" and I hope that his killer rots behind bars that case does not have any relevance to this one Kendrec committed a crime that could have potentially put another humans life at risk. Nice try on pulling that racial card...Society really needs to let go of that ignorance but it should start with you. And I have not once stated anything having to do with his race if it would have been a caucasian, hispanic, asian, middle eastern I would still have my same view.
