Million Hoodie March For Trayvon Martin Today in Los Angeles

Update at 11:20 a.m. See LA Weekly contributor Ted Soqui's photos from Monday's march here. First posted at 7:09 a.m. yesterday.

A demonstration seeking justice for an unarmed 17-year-old shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida will kick off in downtown Los Angeles today.

The case of Trayvon Martin, an African American teen who was walking to a family friend's home near Orlando when he was was shot last month, has set the nation abuzz over race: His shooter, 26-year-old George Zimmerman, has not been arrested.

The Million Hoodie March ...

... is a nationwide movement to put a spotlight on Martin's fate and the justice system's treatment of victims of different races.

Los Angeles has already been the site of rallies for Martin, including one over the weekend. The Million Hoodie March refers to the victim's hooded sweatshirt, which Geraldo Rivera suggested last week could be the source of trouble for any American teenager.

The case, of course, is as complicated as race in America itself. Zimmerman has an Anglo name but is half Latino and certainly doesn't look white.

He had a history of calling 911, and in the case of Martin, he appeared to chase down the kid as he talked to a 911 operator who told him to stop. Commotion ensued, and then gunfire. Zimmerman claimed self defense and cops, apparently, believed him.

Martin had gone to the store for Skittles and a beverage. Zimmerman said he was "suspicious."

After the case came to light Zimmerman's record of calling 911, usually about African Americans in the gated community. He had also wanted to become a cop.

L.A.'s version of the Million Hoodie March starts at City Hall at 4 p.m.

[Added at 11:25 a.m.]: A commenter, below, and this site say the march starts at Pershing Square, at West 5th and Hill streets.

i want to be there. something has to be done about that situation. and it seems that zimmerman has deep connections with law enforcement and therefore is not being charge because of who he knows.

Sad a life was lost here....but people marching in L.A. for something that happened in Florida, leads me to believe that blacks as usual are jumping to conclusions with no facts.  Unless you were there or are an investigating officer you really don't know what truly happened!

It shouldn't be hard to come up with a million hoods for the march. After all it worked so well with the million mutt march years ago.

It is true that all the details are still coming in and indeed, there always are at least two sides to a story, however, Zimmerman was stalking this teenager as he walked along.

Let's see, I'm alone at night being followed by some guy. I don't know the person and they are basically harassing me so let's see what I might do:1. Being a woman probably run or scream or both, but2. Being a male, and a teenage male, probably buck up and ask the dude "What the H... are you following me for.?"3. Apparently Mr. Z. had to have exited his vehicle to approach Martin.4. Maybe if I were alone at night and experienced this same behavior, I'd feel threatened and probably react.

So the fact that Mr. Z. was hit, was becasue he tried to play cop and approach a STRANGER, at NIGHT and question him.

But no, Martin is at fault here.

GIVE ME A BLOODY BREAK!!!

Yeah, because he was that night’s neighborhood watch, if I saw anyone who looked suspicious in my area that didn't belong and was my responsibility to make sure my neighborhood was safe, then I have every right to question what the F are you doing here, especially when there has been house robberies in the same neighborhood you live in.  I guess we should just get rid of all the neighborhood watches and to each their own; what ever happens happens, right?

you need to get your facts straight...it's not as if anyone (his neighbors, the police, HOA, etc.) ever elected him to the position of a neighborhood watch person. In fact, only a couple of the homeowners had ever seen george zimmerman.  so it wasn't as if a whole neighborhood of homeowners got together at a meeting one weeknight and asked who would like to volunteer to patrol the area.  even if they had done so, it still wouldn't have given anyone who patrolled, the authority to do anything other than observe and report someone suspicious to the police or 911. just so you know...neighborhood watch volunteers only have the right to act as the eyes and ears of the police...which means they can only observe and report anything or anyone that looks suspicious.  they have no right to pursue anyone, they have no right to confront anyone, or detain anyone.  so it pretty much goes without saying that stalking a MINOR, as in "CHILD", who is walking to his OWN HOME in the neighborhood, then getting out of your car to CHASE HIM on foot, WITHOUT identifying yourself as neighborhood patrol (or wearing any identifying clothing or badge), then verbally confronting him, physically grabbing him, then SHOOTING him at point blank range in the chest and killing him, ESPECIALLY when told not to by the 911, just DOES NOT really fit the definition of what a neighborhood watch patrolman is within his rights to do. so, just so that you don't repeat the ignorant and hideously negligent actions of mr. zimmerman, i suggest you EDUCATE yourself on the legal limitations of patrolling your neighborhood. unless of course, you're just a wannabe cop, racist, bully who has it in your head that you are some sort of unrecognized hero.  oh and btw- there are plenty of neighborhoods ALL over america that do not have neighborhood watch associations and they are just fine.  there was also a time when there was no such thing.

HaHaHa..so laughable..it's called looking out for your fellow human being..if I saw someone getting raped would I not try to stop it no matter what race the person was...if I saw someone creeping around my house or neighborhood I have every right to confront them..You put to much faith in the system and not enough faith in your fellow human being..Zimmerman never grabbed him..he was observing and reporting to the police through 911, the guy is 17 6'2 and not in his own neighborhood, how is he suppose to know how old someone was....the guy hit Zimmerman and was on top of him using his fists as a deadly weapon..Zimmerman was walking back to his car and the other guy became the aggressor ..if he wanted to just kill him why did he call 911, why didn't he just shoot him and speed off..like all the other murderous cowards out there..huh???Huh??? Why don't you get your facts straight..before calling someone a racist ("you're just a wannabe cop, racist, bully") what a jerk you are.

explain how it is that club charter sounds like the president in that comment.  i bet you can't come up with any way to make a comparison.  that's how stupid your post is. you're just another lonely comment troll creeping around comment boards and threads making one hateful remark after another about president obama, even when the topic has nothing to do with him.  we get it, you hate the current president.  but get this...people legitimately commenting on topic don't care if you hate him, so stop boring us all please.  haven't you heard by now?  presumptuous, self-indulged, 'experts" only ever entertain themselves, everyone else talks about them when they leave the room. now go away moron.

Brandon - You are SO right. My posts are always so darn stupid. I am so embarrassed. I realize--now that you point it out--I am only entertaining myself with my posts. Perhaps that is why you have a grand total of 4 (FOUR) "likes" while I have 328 and am the Informer's "most liked" commenter? Mkay? So perhaps YOU "can stop boring us all please."

Zimmerman said he was walking back to his SUV when Martin approached him from behind, according to the Sentinel's report, which Sanford police confirmed Monday afternoon. The two exchanged words before Martin decked him with a punch to the nose and began beating him, Zimmerman told police. He said he then shot Martin in self-defense.Witnesses said they heard someone cry out in distress, some of them telling NBC News and other news organizations that it was Martin. But police sources told the Sentinel their evidence indicated it was Zimmerman. One witness told police he saw Martin pounding Zimmerman on the ground. This witness was certain it was Zimmerman who was crying for help, the Sentinel reported. When police arrived less than two minutes later, Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose and had a swollen lip and bloody lacerations to the back of his head, the newspaper reported. Police said Zimmerman wasn't badly injured and didn't seek treatment until the next day.DONT LET THE TRUTH GET IN THE WAY OF YOUR LYNCHINGLETS GET BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY

liloleme

Then why was he not given medical treatment? Why did the first police officer want to book him? Why in the mug shot there are not scars or anything? How could Martin be fighting when he died holding the can of tea and the pack of skittles?  But the so call witness who saw zimmerman getting beat only came up days AFTER   the other reports.... I say BULLSHIT... He FOLLOWED that boy and MURDERED HIM!!!

Realist

These people (fanatical treyvon supporters) don't care about knnowing the truth, don't care if treyvon attacked zimmerman first or not, beating him to the ground and pummeling him, don't care if treyvon went for zimmerman's gun, thereby endangering zimmerman's life... Had this happened to a white kid, the public reaction would be very different. Because it happened to a black kid, even the president of the USA pipes in with comments and opinions, without knowing the facts.

Cool. George Zimmerman was not WHITE people./ His half Peruvian and half Jewish - so quit with the WHITE HATE.

@ Street..... no one is 'hating' on anyone in this Trayvon case. We are seeking JUSTICE!!!  Now if I were to feed into your word play I would simply say look up James C. Anderson in Jackson MS. Those WHITE people are getting put in jail FOR LIFE for beating then running over a BLACK man simply for being Black.

That has been noted (his Latino background), above.

Don't act like white people aren't still wholly hateable. I hate everyone though.

meh. everyone makes generalizations. thats why people fit all latinos into the "mexican' category or group all asians as "asians" (or "chineses") and associate all the same bad asian stereotypes across the board (bad driving, dog eating, etc...) so to a lot of people i know,  half jewish = half cracker. albeit half a matzoh cracker.

Point is he shot an unarmed kid who he himself deemed a criminal. And even AFTER the 9-11 operators told him not to pursue the kid (which, to me, is the most damning piece of evidence against his "stand your ground" defense)

He pretty much judged a kid based on his paranoid beliefs of black youths being criminals and because he's not clearly apart of a subjugated minority group (in america anyway), he's getting judged himself.

Its too bad about this poor kid Trayvon.  And the guy who shot him should be arrested.  If and when that happens, i think the black community should keep marching in protest.  They should channel their outrage over this incident towards other problems regarding the situation of their youth. I sometimes use public transit, and the most disrespectful, loud, and obnoxious riders are usually young black males wearing hoodies.  I've had confrontations with them because I stood up for an old homeless woman who also happened to be black like them who they were picking on.  I told them, "she's your people, why would you kick her when she's down, why would you make fun of her for being poor?"   They got up and were going to jump me, but some older black dudes stood with me because they felt i was right. I really hope the black community works with these wayward black youth that give kids like Trayvon a bad name and possibly put a target on his back.  Don't get me wrong, my people (mexicans) have more than their fair share of screw ups (were a mess too), but i don't generally see them harassing the general public (http://sandrarose.com/2011/10/...  like i see the black kids with hoodies do.

R.I.P. Trayvon.
