Night Stalker Hero Detective Gil Carrillo Becomes Chief of San Fernando Police Force

Gil Carrillo with Sheriff Lee Baca.
Gil Carrillo is the man who helped crack the Night Stalker case, one of the Southern California's most terrifying murder sprees. Richard Ramirez killed and attacked from South Orange County to San Francisco, and he seemed to do so at random. You can only imagine the sweat he generated as Angelenos kept their windows locked tight in the summer of 1985.

The sheriff's detective retired as a hero in 2009, remembered warmly for helping to ID Ramirez, whose mug shot was released to a public that literally chased him down on the street one day that summer.

Now Carrillo is back:

The embattled city of San Fernando, perhaps looking to inject some stability and credibility into City Hall following a well-publicized sex scandal, has hired Carrillo to lead its small police department.

Besides a mayoral affair that played out publicly during a City Council meeting, San Fernando has had to deal with a police chief who was criticized after a female cadet claimed she had sex with him and was later forced out of the organization.

Carrillo, it is hoped, will set the town straight while the search continues for a permanent chief. City administrator Al Hernadez said in a statement sent to the media:

Mr. Carrillo comes highly recommended by many influential leaders including Carmen Trutanich, City Attorney for the City of Los Angeles. His colleauges refer to him as a "cops cop" and as a leader who has always maintained the highest ethical standards.

The ex-detective said he looks forward to it:

I am humbled and honored and look forward to living up to the expectations of the city of San Fernando. My objective is to move this department forward and I will work diligently to meet and greet and win the residents, the citizens and every member of the Police Officers Association and all of its members.

I've met Gil Carrillo at a couple of social functions in recent years .... from my experiences in LASD and since retired now ... I believe GIL CARRILLO will be an asset to San Fernando. Just knowing his background history and career achievements ... he is the right person at the right time for SAN FERNANDO.   Having lived in SYLMAR back in the 1960's ... knowing a few folks in San Fernando in those years ... I believe leadership is now needed more than ever.Gil will certainly fit that completely.  CONGRATS GIL !!

Just one problem folks.  He has absolutely no management experience at all.  He was detective, not a law enforcement manager. I don't think his charm alone is going to help him make command level decisions.  Good luck San Fernanado !

Go to san fernando sun facebook page or www.sanfernandosun.com to get the real story.  The council majoritylied to residents and  brought Carrillo in through the back door,.  Hopefully the L.A. Weekly will attend a city council meeting (this Monday 6:00 p.m.) and get the real story.  This reads like p.r. for city hall.  Failed to mention .. there's a recall going on !

Come on L.A. Weekly .. people depend on you to really get the story. Residents were so disgusted with the council majority's end run to bring Carrillo in through the back door .. that they walked out of the council chambers. There is a recall going on right now.   Go the the san fernando valley sun facebook page or to www.sanfernandosun.com  to read what really happened!  What you wrote is public relations bull___ Where did you get your information from ..city hall???? Why don't you go to the council meeting this Monday night at 6:00 and talk to residents and get the news rather that report b.s.

Gil Carrillo is a lucky guy; word on the street is the SF police chief gets first shot at the female cadets.

Sorry to disappoint you, Chris.  I know this man.  You and San Fernando will find no one more capable and more ethical than Gil.

Glad to hear it because the city needs some serious change regarding ethics. Recall the mayor Mario Hernandez, Mayor Pro Tem Brenda Esqueda and council member Maribel De La Torre to get the city back on track.

Stop bossing me around reality check, you must be a burned out badge heavy cop

Reality Check

Exactly-- they live in Sylmar, a tamale throw away. Crime fighting is borderless, douche. Now take your Code 7, Tubby. Maybe Gil will "pop."

Reality check gets my vote for the number one San Fer gang cheerleader.  However, Most SF 13 gang members live OUTSIDE of San Fernando in Sylmar.  As far as 211's and 459's "all through the valley"....that would't be Chief Carrillo's problem then would it?  There are 7 LAPD divisions in the valley.  Besides, San Fernando enjoys a much lower rate of 187's, 211's and 459's than other parts of the valley per capita.

Reality Check
Reality Check

San Fer 13 is Sureno and firmly entrenched there-- with their family and neighbors direct or implied consent-- running dope, Ho's, and 211/459 crews all through the Valley for La eMe. Let's see what Gil does about that before we reap too many premature accolades.
