Rave Promoters Reza Gerami, Pasquale Rotella Plead Not Guilty in Coliseum Corruption Case

Updated at the bottom with indictment details from the District Attorney's office. First posted at 12:22 p.m. Also, see our piece about how the D.A.'s office seems to be implicating rave culture itself, here.

Defendants in the corruption scandal at the L.A. Coliseum today pleaded not guilty today.

Indictments, the details of which had yet to be revealed to the press, targeted rave promoters Reza Gerami and Pasquale Rotella as well as the public venue's former general manager, Patrick Lynch, and events manager, Todd DeStefano.

Both rave promoters have maintained their innocence in statements:

Gerami's attorney, Stefan Sacks, said:

Throughout the course of its dealings with the Coliseum Commission, Go Ventures followed all of the rules and procedures that it understood were either established or authorized by the Coliseum Commission. Neither Go Ventures, nor Mr. Gerami, ever knowingly violated any public corruption laws, nor have they sought to abuse the public trust. We are confident that the evidence will show that our client, Mr. Gerami, was not a perpetrator in any wrong doing and that he will be completely exonerated in court

Rotella's attorney, Gary Jay Kaufman said in a statement sent to the media today:

rotella attorney insomniac.JPG
Insomniac Events / Leah Lee
Rotella heads to court today with his attorney.

All transactions between Insomniac and the Coliseum were transparent and approved by the Coliseum General Manager, his staff and the attorneys representing the Coliseum. While we recognize that issues surrounding the Coliseum demand attention, we are extremely disappointed that the District Attorney would seek to have Mr. Rotella arrested when he did nothing wrong.

Any charges against Mr. Rotella are clearly politically motivated and publicity driven. Mr. Rotella will vigorously defend himself to clear his good name and looks forward to being completely vindicated.

In the meantime, it is business as usual for [Rotella's concert firm] Insomniac. The company has a robust leadership team in place implementing Mr. Rotella's vision and no events will be impacted.

The Los Angeles Times reported that DeStefano was paid more than $2 million from event organizers, including the above rave promoters, on the side, even though the Coliseum is a publicly owned venue.

And, in a story we broke, event organizers also allegedly paid Coliseum union stagehands $2.5 million in cash for their work at parties and concerts, therefore possibly avoiding hundreds of thousands in taxes and other necessary deductions.

Rotella was in Miami this week to attend the annual DJs' retreat known as the Winter Music Conference but apparently returned to L.A. overnight and surrendered to authorities.

All four defendants were arrested and jailed, and bail for the rave promoters was set at $1.2 million.

[Update at 12:38 p.m.]: The District Attorney's office just sent out a statement saying the defendants, including two others previously unknown to us, were hit with "conspiracy, embezzlement and bribery charges for allegedly stealing millions from the historic stadium."

A grand jury came up with 29 counts and turned them into the D.A. on Tuesday, according to the office.

The two additional defendants are former Coliseum technical manager Leopold Caudillo Jr. and janitorial contractor Antonio "Tony" Estrada, according to the D.A. Those two had yet to be arrested and were said to be "out of the country."

The crux of the D.A.'s case against the rave promoters and DeStefano is summarized by this allegation, made in the office's statement:

Coliseum Petition 186.11

DeStefano, who quit in January 2011, allegedly received more than $1.8 million from Insomniac, the company that produced the Electric Daisy Carnival, and Go Ventures, which also sponsored Coliseum events. In exchange, DeStefano used his public position to limit the payments due the Coliseum and ensure the concerts continued even after a highly publicized fatality after one of the concerts in the summer of 2010.

Gerami and Rotella "are charged with one count each of conspiracy and bribery and multiple counts of embezzlement," according to the statement.

[Added at 12:45 p.m.]: The case against Lynch is summarized by the office here:

The indictment alleges Lynch did profit from his own arrangement with Tony Estrada, the owner of "Services for All Events," a janitorial company that cleaned the stadium. Estrada allegedly wrote 239 checks to Lynch totaling $385,000, giving some to Lynch and depositing others directly into a Miami bank account that Lynch set up. In return, Lynch allegedly authorized Estrada's company to bill the Coliseum at a higher rate.

Caudillo, the D.A.'s office says, "was charged with one count of conflict-of-interest after he allegedly directed stadium business to a firm he founded, HH Tech."

Regarding the rave promoters' relationship with DeStefano and Lynch, a petition to freeze assets filed with the court states:

Defendants Gerami and Rotella paid DeStefano in excess of $1.8 million in order to continue to hold the events they promoted at the Coliseum through contracts that DeStefano negotiated to the benefit of the promoters, thereby saving them significant sums of money, and to the detriment of the Coliseum which lost revenue by the reduced costs as well as the payments diverted to DeStefano's personal business accounts. Rotella and Gerami paid DeStefano to directly lobby for them to save them at least $1 million by virtue of his position as a Coliseum insider who affected the contract for their events and the amount of rent paid to the Coliseum. Lynch became aware of the relationship and allowed it to continue.

The petition lists assets owned by the defendants and argues that the suspects might try to "dissipate" them in order to avoid paying restitution.

The D.A. is asking the court to essentially freeze those assets. For Rotella the amount they seek to be frozen is about $1.7 million assets. For Gerami it's about $372,000.

Coliseum Indictment

[Added at 1 p.m.]: A District Attorney's response to the defendants' arguments for lower bail amounts seems to empty both barrels at DeStefano, Gerami and Rotella. It attempts to paint Gerami and Rotella as part of a longstanding illicit rave culture that found quasi-legitimacy in DeStefano's influence at the publicly run venue:

Reading this is no Joke.. Back in the Days at Park Plaza Hotel Reza Rip us All Off.. He has Cops On the Payroll.. They would Pat-down The Boys Who were Selling the Drugs.. take them and sell it them-self's... Reza would say we made no Money.. Just enough to pay Security.. The Place would be Packed... your not Fooling anyone thats why he is in a box with Bars on it... Were are his Policemen now.....

who cares
who cares

Corruption, bribery, embezzlement, blah blah blah. Wherever there is money, there is greed and corruption. And apperently, there is plenty of it being hustled around at these newly refurbished and much more publicly acceptable rave events. Thats right...I called it a RAVE event. Because thats what it is. I laugh when these bloggers justify and rationalize that "it cant be called a rave event because its not held in a empty lot or warehouse."  Rubbish. Lets not lose sight of the real issue here: kids using ecstasy. The coliseum with 100,000 kids vs. an abandoned warehouse with 300 kids? Whats the difference, folks? None. Only now, the kids have a more presentable face to present to their parents. Instead of hiding out and lying about where they are spending their nights, kids now get to say...."We are going to the Daisy Carnival, mom/dad." Parents...don't be fooled. These new RAVE parties and their hotshot promoters are reaping big rewards ($$$). The picture above (attorney, etc) says it all. This is big business now and has been for quite some time. Drugs are being hustled relentlessly at these venues. Ecstasy in particular. The deaths of these innocent kids due to ecstasy overdose are being covered up in favor of protecting the big business behind these events. The blood of these fallen toddlers is on the hands of anyone connected to Go Ventures, Elctric Daisy, etc, etc.

I think it is a shame that the state of california is spending so much money to indite these promoters when there are so many things our tax $ could be going towards.

It is also obvious because it is a political time that they are focusing and trying to "crack down" on the whole rave culture itself.  GoVentures puts on state of the art shows that take much detail and hard work to insure its fans-customers  not only have a wonderful time but implement AND encourage a safe drug free environment.  This is done with banners on the effects of certain drugs,  EXTRA hired under cover police and security provided by GoVentures NOT the state or colisum.  All the coliseum is concerned about is instant revenue.  These events employee "thousands" of california residents and help small and large businesses and vendors alike.  Banning these events would only drive people to other states.  Yes, this is a culture; culture of love and MUSIC.

The fatality that happened over a year ago was NOT @ a GoVentures event.  When are people and families going to star taking responsibility for their own actions.  What happened was devastating  but if this happened @ a Madonna concert would she banned from performing in California?  The need for house music is more prevalent than ever.  Artist everywhere come to theses shows to look for talent to add or produce their music.  HOUSE music IS THE CULTURE and influence of ALL music these days.  SO YES; i believe these promoters are getting targeted and it is a shame!

Dennis don't you believe this is a shakedown by the coliseum? After inspecting everything that's been released by news agencies and relying on common sense it seems like they're just trying to save their hides from bankruptcy

why isn't coca cola being indicted for bribery? there is no proof that go ventures or insomniac bribed destefano. it looks more like destefano abused his lax position to embezzle money from ALL parties, not just "rave" promoters. i'm sure 99% of politicians in LA are guilty of this, even in the coliseum commission. why don't you report on former coliseum commission head David Caruso and his conflict of interest issues to purchase the coliseum while he was the head of the coliseum commission and the USC board? the issues that forced him to resign and get a canned "we will miss him" response from his best friend david israel? why doesn't the DA pursue any action against Caruso as a public figure abusing his position? Is it because he is a billionaire and Insomniac and Go Ventures are measly millionaires? The LA Weekly used to be about the people but it's obvious how special interests can change the voice of a paper for the people.dennis romero is a tool and we, the dance music scene, are getting screwed by the politics. these aren't raves, they are multi-million dollar world class music festivals that employ hundreds of people directly and effect 1,000's indirectly. they aren't illegal events held in warehouses. the general public thinks its about the girl dying at EDC but the politicians just care about the money. Reza Gerami and Pasquale Rotella were not Todd Destefano's boss and the blame should go on the commission for letting Destefano set up a company to accept payments from Insomniac, Go Ventures, Coca Cola, Hollywood movie companies and whoever else Destefano could weasel his way into.

L.A. Weekly is simply doing their job as news reporters. Looking through this article, Dennis Romero has done a good job at staying unbiased and simply reporting the facts. Of course, I'd be interested to see a report on these other allegations towards Coca Cola as well.

Does anyone really think that $2 million owed to the coliseum is enough to bring on charges of conspiracy against these individuals? This has nothing to do with laws & owed money. This is all about egos. A city embarrassed by a couple of "RAVE" promoters after a little girl dies at an event they were not only fully aware of but approved of having at their venue as well.Sadly two successful party promoters are going to have to be the scapegoats along with 2/4 greedy city employees. Used as examples of, 'We got the last laugh!'Nevertheless, the promoters will prosper as their companies will continue to grow along with the culture, maybe with a little bit of jail time. And the dinosaurs aka Coliseum officials & the DA will slowly rot away in the misery they create for themselves. Times are changing & they can fight it all they want but the people have spoken & they're not budging.

Its about time
Its about time

I am glad the DA has gone after someone for kickbacks etc.  I read endlessly of LAUSD officials who 'didn't know" it was wrong to use LAUSD funds for personal purposes; Rocky Delgadillo's wife driving a city vehicle; MLK Hospital employees billing tons of OT while not at the hospital, LAUSD again paying money to companies owned by insiders; community college funds going to spouses or children of officials. Then there was the PR exec padding his company's bills.  etc. So many go on "administrative leave" or "resign" (with fat pension natch). I am not alone in wanting to see some serious accountability. The public treasury is not a pinata.  The Coliseum stuff smells like a three day old fish. Good for the DA. I hope something comes of it.

Appreciate the coverage and unbiased report, Dennis.

Having worked with Reza Gerami on events at the LA Sports Arena and Olympic Coliseum since Monster Massive '98; I'd like to speak on behalf of his character. In my humble opinion, Reza breaks his back to organize each show. He's a community-builder at heart and more than anything, I believe he does it for all the shining faces smiling back at him while on stage. Just look at Reza's assets they're looking to freeze. $372K is not really that much considering all the years that GO has been putting on shows.

Although I haven't worked directly with Pasqualle Rotella, I think his willingness to return overnight and surrender himself to authorities is also worth considering.

Conspiracy? Embezzlement? These are rather serious claims. Whether or not they are true, such allegations are clearly damaging their reputation as event-planners.

Wait wait wait.. I said that I commented here to support Reza Gerami and my belief in his upstanding character after having worked with him for since 1998. I never mentioned anything about Gunney.

Marcus, I know you've had your differences with Gunney as I've seen some of the conversations across Facebook. Can I ask what your part is in all of this? Are you a competitor? Do you also host such nightlife events? Yes, I'd please like to understand your animosity towards Go Ventures and start an open dialogue.

Very serous crimes Garick Chan!   The DA is considered to be one of the best and he would not have done such with out extreme amounts of provable evidence.  Who are you trying to fool?  You guys have wronged like tons of people!!!  Ware the fuck is my Monster Massive Refunds!!!! you owe me for 5 tickets.

Garick Chan

I'll admit that I am not following this case very closely. Simply saw this article and wanted to voice my personal opinion of Reza's upstanding character as I've known him. Go Ventures has always done their best to bring great dj's and good parties to the Southern California electronic dance scene. I'm sure that details regarding ticket sales and refunds are being worked out. I haven't kept up with the most recent developments and I do remember a public statement being made about refunds.

I'm not sure who the DA is or who considers him as one of the best. There are many reasons for pursuing court cases and it's not necessarily based on a preponderance of evidence.

Many are quick to attack from behind anonymous names. I believe in transparency. If you've got issues.. let's hug it out.

Thanks for blaming me.

The evidence includes emails and checks between the promoters and DeStefano (you an see it embedded above). The emails indicate that DeStefano is offering to give discounts in exchange for payments directly to him, it would seem (and, let me add, for my own safety) allegedly. Maybe the promoters didn't read the emails. But you can read them for yourself.

i read the indictment, there is no context to that quoted email. it's been proven that destefano did similar dealings with Coca Cola and Hollywood production companies for TV and movie shoots along with god knows who else. Why they are not targeted isn't in any of your articles, maybe you can explain that? shouldnt they be indicting whoever at coca cola for that $70,000 that got paid to destefano's company?
