Cops today were looking for a man who they say shot the mother of his children and took off with their two young kids.

Police said the shooting happened about 4:50 a.m. at the 50-year-old Sportsmen's Lodge hotel, which is at 12825 Ventura Blvd. in Studio City.

We asked the LAPD if an Amber Alert would be issued for the children:

No, they said, because the vehicle the suspect used is unknown and, therefore, they can't put out a description of the car or its plate, as would be necessary for a statewide alert.

The victim was said to be in and out of consciousness at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but LAPD Officer Wendy Reyes said she was critical but stable.

The children are 6 months old and 2 years old, police said.

The woman had been shot in the head, cops said, but was able to dial 911 and plea for help.

[Added at 12:10 p.m.]: Police just told the Weekly the suspect was ID's as Michael Green, 27; the children are the elder Maaliyah, (she's 2 in June) and 6-month-old Zyler. Photos are coming, and we'll post them when we get them.

Dang, that's one tough woman who can take a shot to the head and still call 911.
