VIDEO: Hundreds of Fitness Dorks Turn Out for Massive 'Zumba' Flash Mob at L.A. Live

"A couple hundred people are getting their groove on at LA Live. Here's an aerial pic."
What appeared to be hundreds, if not thousands, of Zumba® fans in their finest Latin-flavored workout getups crowded the Nokia Plaza yesterday afternoon, forming the most chaotic mob at L.A. Live since the Lakers riots.

If you haven't heard of Zumba yet, here's what you're missing: It describes itself as a "Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that blends red-hot international music... and contagious steps to form a 'fitness-party' that is downright addictive."

Yes, it's as dorky as it sounds. Kind of like Pilates meets Dance Dance Revolution meets...

... Brazilian dance lessons on an old persons' cruise.

What a perfect fit, then, for AEG mogul Philip Anschutz' nauseatingly corporate downtown empire, with the Herbalife building towering overhead and all those giant Blade Runner screens blaring the mob's image back down on them.

Sigh. We've said it before -- flash mobs just aren't what they used to be.

But onto the feel-good part! Zumba creator Beto Perez was in town for his birthday, and it appears L.A. showed him a pretty good time. Here's the best video we can find so far of yesterday's flashdance (we'll post a better one if it turns up):

Anyone could show -- all they had to do was memorize some merengue-lite choreography posted to YouTube about a month in advance. The midriff hottie in the demo actually appears to be in Vegas, but same thing, right?

Participants on Twitter called the turnout "EPIC" and "exhilarating." Cha-ching.

Zumba has changed my life you Negative Ignorant Blogger.  Get away from your computor and give life a fair shake - pun intended.  How anyone can-feel that they have enough information to pass judgement by just looking at the cover or peeking into a window just astounds me.  Sad irony that this sort of ignorance will never go away.

I'm having a blast with Zumba!  I've  lost 11 lbs. in about 7 weeks, just dancing 3 nights a week.  I feel so passionate about it, I was certified by Beto the day before the Flash Mob.  This was a way for us to not only celebrate a wonderful man for his birthday, but to celebrate life.   And yes, we all left the mob and joined Beto with Augie to raise money for Augies Quest.  We have raised over $500,000 and as Augie's wife put it, she has never experienced anything with with so much support and positive energy.  Augie lifted his two feet, and danced with us that night!  We dance for so many reasons, sometimes for ourselves, sometimes for ALS, sometimes for Cancer...and we'll keep dancing, even for you!

Maybe you should Zumba sometime to get all your anger out. The thousands of that showed up had a blast and headed to the Zumba fundraiser for Augie's ASL after. Funny how you didn't mention that. $ 500,000 has been raised by us "dorks" that Zumba to help ASl.

That is amazing and not "dorky" at all. The problem with most of the "writers" at LA Weekly in recent years, is that they do ZERO fact checking and ZERO reporting. They have degenerated into a medium to spew hate and judgement. It's sad.

I did not know of the fundraiser until reading your comment. Thank you for mentioning that.

Hey ShakinBoots, what is up my commenting sista? Much respect to you; you are one BAD ASS commenter. I always dig your posts.

Here is what I'm noticing lately from LA Weekly & OC Weekly blogs. You mention how the blog has become a "medium to spew hate and judgement," which I agree with at times, but I think the writers intention was for snark. Back in the day, our beloved Rebecca Schoenkopf, reigning queen of snark, ran the OCW. The only one who comes close now is Gustavo but he'll still really piss ya off at times. Many of the other writers, in my humble opinion, miss the harmless yet humorous snark and instead encroach upon being offensive. For example, we all know Dennis Romero hates potheads, so when he writes a story about pot, it will be spun with the attitude that potshops should be outlawed. Basically I see it that the writers are kind of a milder form of John & Ken, ya know, in a subtle way. Very subtle.

That said, I like reading the rag--especially for the irony in the stories and the funny comments. But I think Rebecca should come by and give a lesson.

Just my two cents... (I'm only sayin' somethin' cuz geez, alot of tough comments on this thread...)

 Thank you! :)

I agree that there's a lot of attempted snark that falls way short of humor. I'm down for snark if it's done well, sparingly, and with some humor. Some of what they post here is just downright hateful or angry though. Take the title of this post, for example: "fitness dorks".  That's the type of thing bullies in school say to pick on people. Reminds me of "band geeks". They also post things that are easily factually refuted. You'd think they'd do at least a little fact checking to maintain some semblance of credibility.

I only recently learned about Rebecca Schoenkopf when I looked up Gustavo and found out he was the new-ish editor. Maybe she should come back.

Zumba is a great way to burn some calories, to connect with other ladies attempting to be healthy and strong. I would think in this fat, unhealthy, depressed, couch potato country, where most people's idea of moving is moving their thumb on the remote control of a tv or video game, or where late adult onset diabetes from being obese or where the diagnosis of high blood pressure are eating up our tax dollars and quality of life in this country ....this would be something that would be supported. I love Zumba, in our class we have women 78 year to 18 years old...it is so fun, the women have a great time and they are getting healthy. So color me a healthy, within my BMI, beautiful, slim, happy, dancing Latina dork any day of the week.

It's best to get fit if there are hundreds, thousands or millions of you.

You obviously have never tried it or seem too afraid to attempt it.  YOU are missing out! The rest of us will dance and enjoy our lives which are filled with happiness and hope for a world of love and simple pleasures.

Why would you even write something like this if all you're going to do is act like an angry mean bully about it?! To alienate a majority of LA who happen to be, as you call them, "fitness dorks". Do you actually think you're being cute or funny by being a bully? You bash cyclists, and now you're bashing people promoting zumba and fitness in a fun way. Is there ANYTHING you like?

Great, we all know that big bad angry Simone hates pretty much anything that makes other people happy. Mission accomplished. Why don't you just leave LA since you hate everything about it so much? Maybe you should be writing in a therapy journal instead of here.

You're calling a LATIN-inspired fitness program "dorky"? Girl, you better check yourself. You live in LOS ANGELES, with a Latino majority.
