Abdul Arian, Teen Shot on Live TV by LAPD, Inspires $120 Million Legal Claim Against City

The family of Abdul Arian, the 19-year-old shot by L.A. cops last week live on television, say they're filing a $120 million claim against the city and the LAPD for his alleged wrongful death.

News of the probable lawsuit came as relatives staged a protest yesterday against the department outside of its Devonshire Division station in Northridge.

Family members have contended that ...

... not only did the 19-year-old not have a gun when officers unleashed a reported 90 rounds on him as news choppers buzzed overhead, but that he didn't even like guns.

Officers later confirmed he did not have a weapon.

We reported, however, that a Facebook page updated he posted earlier this month stated:

The Arian protest.

Just came back from the shooting range. and got some blood on my hand thanks to my lil cousin lol

Cops say he told 911 operators that night, as he led officers on a crazy chase through the San Fernando Valley, that he had a gun. The LAPD released a partial transcript of his words with emergency dispatchers:

"I have a gun."

"I've been arrested before for possession of destructive devices, I'm not afraid of the cops."

"If they pull their guns, I'm gonna have to pull my gun out on them."

The family wants to hear the recording.

The L.A. police union has come to the side of the cops who opened fire, with Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) president Tyler Izen saying in a statement sent to the Weekly and other outlets:

It is unfortunate that our society has come to the place where a lawful command from an officer goes ignored. Oftentimes, this sets into motion a regrettable series of events, as in this case. When a person decides to engage officers in a pursuit, refuses police orders to end the threat they are posing to the safety of officers and the public, tells the police that they have a gun, exits a vehicle and takes an aggressive shooting stance, extends their arms out and points an unknown object at the officers, they are subjecting themselves to the consequences of their actions, which may include being shot.

While our hearts go out to the Arian family over their loss, it is critical for the public to know that while being pursued by LAPD officers, Mr Arian called 911 and engaged in a lengthy conversation with the 911 operator. Among the statements he made were, 'I have a gun,' 'I've been arrested before for possession of destructive devices, I'm not afraid of the cops,' and 'If they pull their guns, I'm gonna have to pull my gun out on them.

Indeed it appeared to many of us watching that Arian ran from his car (strangely, a former police cruiser), turned toward officers more than once, and assumed a shooting stance, arms extended.

Family members have said he could have been subdued with less-than-lethal weapons such as a taser.

Family attorney Jeffrey M. Galen said 120 rounds, 15 shots per officer, were squeezed at Arian.

This equates to one million dollars per bullet in compensation for the grieving family. It is the hope of Mr. Galen that this action will result in the reform of officer training and cultural diversity.

If you are criminal then only you can call cops as murderous criminals. Cops are not fools or murders who attacks anyone who comes on their way. They are protectors of law. Maybe only a few cops are like what you have said but most of them are not. They abide by the law. They only try to protect the law but sometimes mistake may happen. I don't think in this case cops did a mistake. Maybe they got some proof which made the boy criminal in their view.

fuck the police, classic case of police brutality

why the hell do you need to pump 90 rounds into someone, the LAPD are such crap shots that they can't use one round to take him down. LOL!!!!

The VA expects almost 6.5 million patients will use the agency for their health care during the next fiscal year. The President's budget includes a medical care increase of about 4.1 percent over last year to $52.7 billion. These increases include upgrades in funding for mental health care and gender-specific health care for female veterans coming home from war, according to the VA.

Based on this video interview with EYEWITNESSES (trapped in their car during the incident) who felt personally THREATENED by Arian's aggressive, reckless actions, this lawsuit should be LAUGHED out of court:http://www.ktla.com/videogalle...

The young couple interviewed THANK the LAPD specifically from the assailant, whom THEY said appeared to be aiming and firing a gun before police shot & killed Arian. This suicidal lunatic was clearly committing SUICIDE BY COP and deserved everything he got. The streets of LA are a SAFER place without the menace of borderline maniacs like Arian who are fully capable of going over the edge.

Check out the KTLA video showing this suicidal lunatic terrorizing a young couple trapped in their car in the middle of the incident. The young couple testifies that they felt PERSONALLY THREATENED by Arian's reckless, aggressive actions and PRAISED the police for PROTECTING them by taking out Arian:

The trouble with you knee-jerk leftists is that you ALWAYS blame 'the man' without bothering to get the FACTS.

"It is the hope of Mr. Galen that this action will result in the reform of officer training and cultural diversity."

Uh, yeah. Mr. Galen is looking for a payday. Just look up my posts on these comment sections and you will see that I am no fan of police, but this idiot committed suicide by cop. Throw out this frivolous lawsuit and disbar the scumbag lawyer for wasting the court's time.

What about the police officers who are now going to have to relive this tragic incident that's been indelible imprinted on their brains every day for the rest of the lives?  They are victims too.  I agree with LAPU - the family should be charged for all the resources this investigation will consume which will run into the millions easily.

He got exactly what he asked for. Why do we have to pay for that? The city is more than just broke. With cuts to our schools, crumbling streets, fire, emergency and police just to name a few. This is total bull $h!t...

To the Arian family, Sorry for your loss but you didn’t winthe lottery. You failed at parenting. Why should you be awarded for yourinability to raise a civil law abiding American? I don't get it. My familycould sure use a few million. You don't see me committing suicide by cop.  Arian family, don’t blame the cops. Blame yourselves.

In fact you should be paying the officers for theemotional distress your son caused them by his selfish act.

In the Amadou Diallo case in New York, the issue of the zillion bullets came up, as the cops are apparently trained to empty their guns. As I recall, they determined that bullet #3 (or whatever) is the one that killed him, and the next thousand bullets they pumped into him were not a problem, since there's no law against shooting a corpse.

The problems with these people is they've got community organizers for handlers.

Can we please start to penalize stupid people and sleazy lawyers that file these ridiculous lawsuits? Also - big time fail on LA Weekly for not reporting the actual physical incidents that occurred - such as this douche bag endangering hundreds of people on the freeway and then making a "shooting stance" against the police officers. If I just want to make millions for my family and also want to kill myself - do I just have to make threatening gestures and pretend I have a gun so I get shot? Look at the tape LA Weekly - I am so tired of this BS reporting where we have to pretend the police just wants to kill people of color.

Factually, during the OJ Simpson case,  Dr Alan Dershowitz testified on the media that the LAPD is trained to TESTY LIE.

Unless their UNION is bankrupted and their Pensions are depleted, the LAPD and other cops wont learn to resist rogue and criminal behaviour. During the 9-11 inside job, NOT one of them testified that its an inside job. So much for their professional instincts and competence and PATRIOTISM.

I KNOW WAT HE DID WAS WRONG. BUT NO PARENT SHUD GO THROUGH THE PAIN OF LOOSING A KID. AND THE FACT THAT IT WAS ON LIVE TV WAS WORSE. HIS PARENTS ARNT TO BE BLAMED FOR THIS HE MADE A CHOICE. NOW PUT UR SELF IN THE PARENTS SHOES HOW WOULD U FEEL. HOW WOULD U LIKE IT IF UR SON WAS SHOT ON LIVE TV FOR U AND UR FAMILY TO WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN? THINK ABOUT IT

I probably wouldn't feel like I should sue the LAPD. Maybe ask news stations to stop playing the video; I wouldn't require they allot me some sort of monetary compensation though.

My heart goes out to the family. The odds of a juryfinding in the family's favor presents the plaintiff’ attorney with legal obstaclesto overcome: the call to 911 stating his intent to use force, exiting thevehicle while cuffing his hands to mimic the classic defense stance, and thenotion of suicide by cop.  Provided thecase is not settled before trial, a jury may find the officers did useexcessive force and award the family damages, or find such force was justified. In the end, regardless who wins, a darkpall befalls humanity.

this bonehead was going 90mph down busy streets of LA..its a miracle he didnt kill anyone on the way to the 101(what if he ran over a mother with a baby in a stroller, does that make him less innocent?)..making fone calls saying he has a gun...I wouldnt paint him as an innocent victim of police brutality

the Los Angeles Police Department has money placed aside specifically for these lawsuits...they'll pay what is settled on and call it a day and next year or the year after we'll all read about the same story...

Nothing like trying to get rich off your realllly stupid kid. What a bunch of freeloaders. They should have to pay for the police time, bullets, helicopter, and what ever else that could be charged and then times it by 10. Good ole Abdul, he should have gone back to the middle east and ran at a check point with a fake bomb, At least he would have got killed in the land of Mohammed. Deport his fracking relatives.

These parents and EVERYONE else who is protesting this are OBVIOUSLY in some deep denial or they didnt see the events that took place in the night of Abdul(complete idiot) arain. He Refused to follow orders and on top of that, pointed both hands towards police in a shooting stance.. Abdul probably wanted to die that night, who knows but lethal force was by all mean justified.

Dream on losers. I remember when we called these people that and worse. Now the new PC term is "plaintiff". Yeah right, let the lawyers spin their wheels for nada. Further, I hope the car is registered to the parents so they can be on the receiving end of some harsh litigation. Letus see the lawyers take that case pro bono.

I feel as though yes this wasn't a racially driven attack by police but its is the job of the police to be observant and if they can not determine between a cell phone vibrating and the bang of a gun they probably shouldnt be considered much less allowed to practice professionally. The distance between the cops and the man in question was a good distance but honestly you have 9 cop cars chasin the kid one person could draw dire as the other shoots. Yea it doesn sound fun but i mean the way it went u may as well as put the kid against a wall and unloaded an AK-47 magazine into him.

ak1287
ak1287

So you're basically saying one police officer, let's call him 'Shot-in-the-face McLuckless', should draw a suspect's fire, and probably get shot... For what, exactly? The distance and the lighting in this scenario were less than non-ideal; most people would have been hard-pressed to even tell that kid was Arabic. You don't know what you're talking about, and until then, you should leave your ignorant and idiotic ideas where they belong; the dump site you call your brain.

Sorry, I misread your comment so I'm reposting.

If this man threatened the police that he would shoot them dead, they aren't required and wouldn't wait until they hear a gun shot.

Also, when police are faced with a potential life-threatening situation, they are NOT thinking "kid", so why are you? This MAN was an adult and made his own decisions.

The cops came off badly in the video. They exposed themselves when he got out of the car.

It was like the keystone cops. Their lawyer is right!

They should be fired and prosecuted. They got too amped up from the chase and lost most of their training.

They probably should not have even chased him. This is the new thinking on chases. Get with it you guys out there.

They should have seen he gun first.

Just goes to show parents don't really know their own kids how they claim. If you were watching the news that night (or even now when you play back the video), it's clear as he's running from police he's running backwards. Almost in a "Catch me if you can" motion. I'm glad to say his effort in gaining his 15 mins didn't last very long.

Makes me even more sick to my stomache knowing the family will win this case. Maybe not the whole $120 Million but a portion of it. And their lucky too because LAPD has better things to do than to waste their time in court, fighting over NOTHING! Which is exactly what this kid was....NOTHING!!!

you are right we dont.. BUT open your eyes...  everyone knows the cops DONT fuck around with child shit.. they are putting their lives at risk to save the innocent (which Abdul could have killed someone by hitting them with his car, did you think about other people's safety?). And IF someone threatens their live they WILL shoot at the person THREATENING their live.. they have a family they want to go home to too. sorry Abdul is died.. but he got what was going to happen to him with the ACTIONS he took... not the ACTIONS the cops took, but the ACTIONS he took
