Betsy Butler, Assembly Candidate for L.A.'s Westside, Spams 8,000 Residents With Weirdest Campaign Paraphernalia Ever

Wait, what?
Betsy Butler's bright idea to attach her campaign flyers to plastic baby bottles must have seemed cute in theory.

The current assemblywoman for much of L.A. County's South Bay area is shooting for finer pastures this November: She wishes to reign over the new citizen-drawn District 50, quite possibly the wealthiest voting district in California history.

So she apparently thought she needed to up the ante, adding some real flair to her flyers:

Butler attached them to real-life baby bottles and had her foot soldiers drop them off on 6,000 to 8,000 residents' doorsteps (by her estimate), a reminder of Butler's victorious bill to ban the dangerous chemical BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups.

"Venice for Change" blogger Marta Evry -- whose day job, awesomely, is editing the TV show Castle -- has posted a long-winded rant about these "thousands of Mexican-made plastic baby bottles ... hand-delivered by paid canvassers." The article likewise appeared on Santa Monica Patch this morning.

Clearly, Evry is gunning for another candidate in the race, and her roast of Butler's baby-bottle mailers is a prime example of that classic Venice Beach cattiness that tears neighbors apart and keeps our news blog running.

"Ok so, if I dont re-elect Betsy Butler, the amount of promotional baby bottles thrown at my doorstep will increase?"
But we've got to admit -- this is some of the weirdest, not to mention wasteful, campaign paraphernalia ever to hit the Westside. BPA is scary and all, but so is feeding a baby with an unsealed bottle you found on your doormat.

David Allgood, an old friend of Butler's on the California League of Conservation Voters, argues that residents without babies "can donate [the bottles] to a women's shelter, or pass [them] along to a friend with babies."

"Worst case scenario, they put them in their recycling bin," says Allgood.

Seems a little naive, for a political organization whose entire purpose is protecting the environment. In this blogger's own Santa Monica household, certain roommates can hardly wrap their heads around recycling old milk cartons, much less some alien polypropylene receptacle with shiny flyers flapping off it.

Evry, angry Venetian, points out that Californians have a pretty abysmal track record with that type of plastic: From 2000 to 2009, polypropylene was recycled about 5 percent of the time. Heh.

She also has a problem with the fact that the baby bottles are manufactured in Mexico by a company called Everflo, whose decision to stop using BPA had nothing to do with Butler.

The assemblywoman, however, makes the case that "the reason they're from Mexico is because California and the rest of country have been so behind" on banning BPA. (Her bill doesn't go into effect until summer 2013.)

And as for the wastefulness factor: "Everyone I know who has gotten them is joyful to have a clean, BPA-free baby bottle ... they can share with those they love the most," says Butler. "Very few people don't have an infant in their life."

Turns out Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom is also running against Butler for the gilded District 50 throne.

Here's his awesome response to Bottlegate (grain of salt, obviously):

"It's a gimmick that is cute, but wasteful I don't think this is going to go over well with voters, particularly here in Santa Monica, where I am happy to say, waste is not looked kindly upon, whether it is energy, water, plastic bags (banned) or polystyrene take-out containers (banned). That said, her team is 'milking' her BPA legislation for all its worth."

But really, beyond all this mud-slinging and politicking, can we just say: Baby bottles? Really? Campaign strategy is not dumping a small landfill's worth of creepy nursing relics onto the general population, then expecting them to catch ballot fever.

I well remember the pot holders of yore, is the baby bottle the new campaign pot holder? With all that Democratic rank and file backing you would think she could scare up better advice...or maybe not, it is the Bauman machine. On second thought maybe it's better to avoid the stumblebums in the Democratic trough.

Just as pointed out most of the comments have degenerated into pot ( to continue that theme) shots from The neighborhood sandbox in Venice. Imagine what the Hatfields and the McCoys would have been like with the Internet. Almost makes you wish for Pappy's showy gun.

Betsy Butler is a doer not a talker. She is a leader who wrote the bill for banning harmful chemicals from sippy cups and baby bottles. She is unafraid to take on powerful polluters like the chemical companies. In her first year in office she had 6 bills protecting the environment, consumers, children, seniors and veterans passed and signed by the Governor. We do not need a negative new person who has filled our landfills with multiple page mailers printed on non-recycled paper who associates with toxic bloggers. Betsy deserves the support she has received from CLCV, Sierra Club, NWPC,Vietnam Vets and The United Farmworkers. She is going to win because SHE IS THE REAL DEAL!

She's a doer alright.  To justify further polluting the environment with this ridiculous and embarrassing display of waste, which is outsourced to Mexico, is non union, and purchased from a manufacturer who has an abysmal environmental track record, is in fact a perfect display as to why Butler has no business carpet bagging this district.  It should also be an obvious reason as to why CLCV, Sierra Club, and ALL labor should withdraw their endorsement.

This speaks to very poor lack of judgement on so many levels.  She may be the incumbent on a technicality, but it is abundantly clear that she hasn't a clue as who her voters are.

CLCV, Sierra Club, and ALL labor should consider the impact on their organization as they continue to support 8,000 PLASTIC BABY BOTTLES MADE IN MEXICO BY AN ANTI-ENVIRONMENT COMPANY.  The credibility of their organizations should stand before that a serial career politicician.  I encourage all of you to email these organizations and ask them to retract their support.

Hi Fran. It's a common misconception that glossy paper, magazines, mailers, etc. can't be recycled. That might have been true in the early days of recycling but it's not true now. Here's a link with more info: http://greenopolis.com/tgr/lea...

So yes, you can recycle mailers from any of the four candidates running in AD50, as well as mailers from initiative campaigns and everyday junk mail.

There is clearly a forest for the trees issue. California environmentalists and health advocates have been trying to ban BPAs in baby bottles/toddler cups for years, but their efforts were frustrated by fierce industry opposition. Betsy Butler finally succeeded where other failed in getting this landmark legislation passed. She's been a remarkably successful legislator and deserves the support she is getting from the environmental community.

Betsy Butler did what even Fran Pavley couldn't do, she got BPA banned in baby bottles and sippy cups.  And now there is momentum for a Federal prohibition on this toxic chemical.  She is an envrionmental champion.  Let's focus on the real issues.  Betsy gets it done and doesn't just talk about it.

David Allgood is a great guy and the California League of Conservation Voters is a great organization, but it pains me to see him have to defend the distribution of 8,000 plastic baby bottles into our beach communities just to provide cover for yet another Butler campaign pitfall.

As it also pained us to watch you defend Torie Osborn buying off votes at ALL the Democratic Clubs with $1,000 checks.

come on... really? Bringing that crazy up again?  Your candidate lost ALL of the clubs, because she couldnt turn out the people to come vote for her.  Or would you prefer we play your supporters temper tantrum, wait, I'm the mayor of weho who actual hit an organizer in the head during his rant.  Probably need to sit this one out Martin.

Wow. On both this and the Patch article, so many people hating Marta so much, but not addressing the content. Btw, if you were one of the 8000 Santa Monicans who got Betsy Butler's baby bottle spam, Torie Osborn's campaign will recycle it for you! Just let us know: madeleine at torieosborn dot com.

Marta Every is such a -- well nasty person. EVERYONE hates her but she is too dumb to figure it out -- politicians distance themselves from her. Opinion is welcomed but when someone's mouth is full of poop they should shut it down -- it stinks!

Interesting Martin.  For someone who is so hated, politicians fear her and blogs pick her up everywhere.  SHE if I'm not mistaken has a background in journalism Martin, what exactly do you have?  A high paying job with the Butler Campaign?  This is what happens when you try to carpetbag a district and you don't know the people in it.  Perhaps Butler should set her tail between her legs and start looking for another job.  Green candidate my ass!  Kudos to our "nasty" colleague Marta Evry.  I used to live in the district but have since moved.  Torie Osborn would have had my vote, hands down!

"A degree in Journalism"? LOL. Yeah right, she's a blogger and is giving them a bad name.

Martin is having tea on the veranda right now. So, please excuse his grammatical flaws. He is focused on more important things while the rest of us just work.

Not too good with quotes either are ya.  Seems it's those little attention to details that keep trippping you and your candidate up.
