New California Bill Would Let 'Car Enthusiasts' Buy Out-of-Print License Plates for $50

Oh, this old thing?
A hipster's dream ride, realized by the California State Legislature!

Assemblyman Mike Gatto -- who appropriately represents L.A., car capital of California -- has proposed a rather petty bill to revive those fugly classic old license plates from the '50s, '60s and '70s.

"Car enthusiasts" could choose between...

... the black-on-yellow plates from the '50s, the yellow-on-black plates from the '60s and the yellow-on-blue plates from the '70s.

They definitely have that retro, so-clunky-it's-cute thing going for them. Very much in the same vein as those label punchers everyone loved so much in the '90s.

Whether that means we should put them back on the market is another question.

Assemblyman Gatto argues in his presser that "it might make the state a little money." ($50 per plate, and they can't be issued until the DMV has received at least 7,500 applications. So yes, chump change.)

But think of the hipsters! Gatto says that aside from the monetary perks, AB 1658 would "enable everyone from the backyard auto restorer, to the nostalgic, to the purchaser of a brand-new but retro-styled automobile, to opt for a license plate most appropriate for their car."

Hardcore car enthusiasts are maybe not so enthused. This would essentially cheapen vintage plates in the private market by making them available to anyone with $50 to spend tricking out their VW Fastback.

"What's old is new," adds Gatto, completely missing the appeal of owning vintage stuff.

"Hipsters"? Hipsters ride fixed gear bikes, act poor voluntarily, and are generally Costco sized douchebags. If I want a retro "black plate" on my 57 Chevy that would be a great option. The writer of this article is so out of touch with the car world it is ridiculous. How does this shit happen? Excuse me while I go have a stroke.

California BLACK plates only for vehicles 1963 thru 1969!  YELLOW plates 1956 thru 1962. my  friend had (repainted both  plates black) on 1956 yellow plates of car 1958, stopped- car taken- never got back and -heavily fined for defacing gov't property!!

Somebody get this writer a clue!  My car club and all my buddies think this is the coolest idea in the world.  This writer obviously has just NO CLUE how many classic car owners bemoan the fact that they have to slap a new white license plate on their classic ride because some tool previously gave up the black plates. Plus with the Big 3 going retro with their new muscle car issues, a new plate on some 2012s isnt that desirable either!  I think I know what's going on: the real "hipster" here is the writer, who thinks being cynical makes her column "edgy."  FAIL!  Get a clue about the auto world before you speak/write.  This is one of the very few good ideas for real people to come out of Sactown.

"Assemblyman Mike Gatto has proposed a rather petty bill"

No more petty than Gil Cedillo's bill to allow Illegal aliens to get a drivers license.
