Texting While Driving Could be Federal Crime Soon

The federal government has been getting all up in your business lately. One federal whistle blower last year said he believes the National Security Agency is storing all our emails. You know, just in case. And President Obama recently flip-flopped on medical marijuana, saying flat out that pot businesses were fair game for federal agents, even in states like California, where they're somewhat legal.

Now it's time for Big Government to get deeper inside your car and ride with you on your way to work and school:

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood announced this week that his Department of Transportation is asking Congress to ban cellphone use by motorists -- nationwide.

Wow, a federal crime for texting while driving? Meanwhile driving like an idiot is perfectly okay on city, state and national levels.

LaHood was simply formalizing what the National Transportation Safety Board said last year when it called for a nationwide ban following a study of a 2010 Missouri highway crash that killed two and injured 38 after a texting pickup driver lost control.

Ruined it for 40 people, and 311 million.

Still, retards will be retards, regardless of what's in their hands.

Horace Cooper, adjunct fellow at the National Center for Public Policy Research, called b.s. on the Obama administration's move today:

Last year we warned that Washington, DC would respond to the problem of distracted driving with a heavy handed solution. One that demonstrates that Washington is out of sync with the needs of mainstreet Americans. Instead of solutions which are voluntary and rely on education and technology, LaHood seeks out the hysterical approach of banning cell phone use outright -- this is a solution whose time hasn't come.

Agreed. There are so many bad drivers out there. Some are talking and texting. Many aren't. Cops have been driving and using handheld radios for decades. You don't see us bitching about it.

What's more, the Safe Transportation Research and Education Center at UC Berkeley just last month said California's laws are dissuading drivers from using their phones behind the wheel. Since the state banned putting phone-to-ear behind the wheel in 2008, it states:

... Hand-held cell phone driver deaths went down 47 percent ...

We don't need Uncle Sam riding shotgun. It's nanny-state politics. It's un-American.

What rights…we have few….I just read: Obama flip-flopping on pot shops…social sites gave away all our info….texting a FEDERAL crime….is drunk driving FEDERAL?…..will eating and driving be FEDERAL….how about listening to music and driving…or scratching your ass and driving…..or driving while driving…or looking at the mountains and driving…its all distracting…whats the difference. Its all about the fines they can put on you. You are worth money while in jail. In Ohio running a red light is a $85.00….in L.A. it's $350.00-$450.00. How do people afford any of this nonsense.

They get you on the hook…making payments…or back in jail….Soon we will all be criminals…by these dumb ass laws….every day it's something knew. If you hit someone in your car and kill them….you are dead meat. Even if its not your fault. So….people take off…fearing for their own life…that's why they haul ass in a police chase…They know the cops are crooked as shit…you either get your ass beat…or get away….

What a mess….and you know what…it will never get better…it too bound up….and can't be sorted out…..people care…but they are the old ones. Its the same old song…our own government is sticking it to us…..just hope you end up on top on the dog pile…RUN FOREST RUN…..

If you haven't noticed…our country has gone insane…mainly the idiots that are in office….Then we see the old photos of the riots….It's all going to repeat itself….This country is so screwed up…..I have talked about this my whole life….yadda-yadda…burnt out on this chatter. Think I'll go get stoned…and text…while I sit on the can…its safe in there…I can lock the door...all those years it took to become a world class knee driver…all goes to waste. Driving while thinking of pizza will get to 90 years in the pen with various butt sex…..Cheers America….the wild animals will take back the planet.

All kidding aside: I'm all for saving lives on the road…I've lost some good friends. I think bad people should be punished…

Eveything changed: Out with the old, in with the new…you notice?….It happenes every 20 years…not just the economy…you got old…and got the boot…hope you had $$$ saved…Economy…another excuse to replace you with new blood. People with no jobs…will do your job for one third of what you get paid….and feel like kings….no one cares how long you have been with the company….go grow…its the only hope….xo

....is it just the holding of something in your hand considered the distracted part?....are they referring exclusively to phones?....if your vehicle is bluetooth equipped, is it then considered distracting when you talk to it?....how about passengers...I'm starting to wonder who exactly falls under the r'tard classification here, drivers or lawmakers

Driving a vehicle is a privilege, not a right. When the use of that vehicle is done in a manner that endangers lives then consequences should be imposed. There is not an argument on this planet that can justify holding a phone in your hand while driving. Second hand smoke was rightfully utilized as an argument to ban smoking in public areas. Why then, is it such a fight to ban someone from dangerously operating a 4000lb piece of equipment at high rates of speed? Unlike second hand smoke, the act of distracted driving can instantly kill, maim or disfigure an innocent person. This is not big brother controlling our lives, this is a government reigning in an overly obnoxious, instant gratification, self absorbed society that selfishly believes that their desire to dangerously text or talk while driving  supersedes my right to have my husband return home safely from a shopping trip. We better eliminate the state law against driving while texting. States are not allowed to enforce federal laws.

No, this will give overzealous police even MORE excuse to pull us over, mess with our rights and take our money. I got a ticket for merely having my phone in my lap, it's not surprising that a lot of cops don't even have full knowledge of the law... and say good bye to your Ipods, he told me I wasn't allowed to have an electric device of ANY kind. I'll fight it, but I'll most likely have to miss work and spend 5 hours at the court house. Nothing but a big fat waste of time, energy and money.

Awwww, you "got a ticket for merely having my phone in my lap" did you? How mean of that cop!

It's not like you were trying to text out of sight or enter a phone number of course. After all, in your lap is a perfectly natural place to keep your phone while driving legally, lol.

Is it against the law to drive with your phone in your lap? NO. It's not. Sounds like you'd make an idiot cop too.

it is not illegal to dial a number even if you are using bluetooth. I never text and drive and I always am hands- free an dmy phone stays in my lap!
