Kendrec McDade Wasn't the First: 6 More Controversial Police Shootings of Unarmed L.A. Black Men

Categories: Police

5. Reggie Doucet, Jr.

Los Angeles civil-rights leaders were equally furious, in January 2011, to learn that LAPD officers had killed unarmed 25-year-old Reggie Doucet -- a former college football star wearing only his underwear. Cops had been called to Doucet's apartment over a dispute between the young black man and his cab driver. Although Doucet wasn't armed, the officer who shot him dead (also black) said that he was acting extremely violent and reaching for the officer's gun holster.

It happened in Chicago

Like it happened in New York

It happened in Houston, Cincinnati and Washington, DC

Murdered by Police

It happened to Timothy Thomas

Just like Johnny Goodwin and Geoffrey Johnson

They were unarmed

They were Black

Aaron Harrison was shot in the back

Khiel Coppin had a hairbrush

Lorenzo Collins had a brick

Jeffrey Lewis, DeOnte Rawlins

They were kids

Julian Alexander was a newly wed

Prince Carmen Jones Jr. was a new Dad

Both of them are dead

Murdered by police

Just like:

Ousmane Zango, Patrick Dorismond

Ronnie White and Roger Owensby….

May they all rest in peace

This is the pressing issue.  Human Rights and American Police forces.  In to many instances they are to ready to use deadly force against Blacks.  South Africa used to have the same problem, but the Blacks rose up against this malady of a racist system.  Anywhere people are being murdered by a system that system will not last..

Perhaps the best answer is have our citizens form a police force that does not answer to the political system in their city. A force made up of citizens for citizens that is not in any way affiliated, aligned or involved with the force we have now for the rich people, Other wise defund them and put them out of business they are not serving up in many instances.

Give it up, media. You've been striving for a race war for decades. Americans have it too good (even in the worst of times) to bother with it. You're better off moving to Europe where another good old fashioned ethnic clash is about to unravel.

Being out in the street or in a car near criminal police gets black men killed. Being killed at a holloween party is too much. the Police depts are way too militarized and goonish.

Everybody racially profiles even African Americans! If African Americans want the killings to stop then they must stop killing each first. If they don't give a crap about each other then no one else will. Listen to the Bill Cosby "Pound Cake Speech" that says it all.

Blanket statement. Most african americans aren't killing one another. I don't give a fuck what "race" of ppl is doing what. I have rights as an american citizen and my rights should not be neglicted because I'm black.

People claim "racism was at the core of the shooting," but I say wait until the races of the officers involved becomes revealed. I believe one of the officers is African American.

What is interesting about this case is that while the police have McDade on video involved in the burglary, his family claims he was not running from the police at all but was instead running home to make curfew.

Even though the 911 caller lied about the suspect having a gun, McDade did commit a crime and put himself in a bad position with the law. He was unarmed and should never have been shot at, let alone killed, but I can't feel 100% sorry for him, and this case should not be compared to the Trayvon Martin case as similar. Officers were not involved in the Florida incident except for the botched investigation of it. BTW, you left out the Kenneth Chamberlain case.

I must be clarified that Kendrick was NOT involved in any crime. The other boy is charged with burglary. Even in that case the backpack that was suposedly stolen was never found

Then why was McDade running from the police?

B ut civil rights and the state of our mindset in America were involved. They need to prosecute Carillo, because his words and actions got that boy Kendrec McDade murdered. And the officers have to be accountable for firing unneccesarilly. I don't understand why from a CAR WINDOW a gun was drawn and used. That boy shoulda gone naked rather than pulling up up his pants. It is so sad, to litterally have fear in our hearts for our sons to go about day to day activities. I understand McDade was up to more that night, but he was a good addolecent making a dumb punk move, as many of us have done something, but we were able to learn our lesson and never do it again, rather than be shot on the spot.

If McDade and his fried had not committed burglary there would have been no phone call to the police.

on october 22nd, 2011, unarmed, innocent father of four, MICHAEL NIDA was shot twice in the back (he was shot at least three times; the two in his back were fatal) by DOWNEY POLICE OFFICER STEVE GILLEY with an MP-5 SUBMACHINE GUN while running away after being aggressively detained. he was out celebrating his birthday with his wife and had no idea a crime had been committed in the area.  officers were looking for two african-american armed robbery suspects, and michaels clothes (he was half white/half hispanic) were 'urban' enough to fit the profile, and he paid for it with his life.  mikey was racially profiled for sure, and race will always be an issue as long as racism is prevalent in society, but the true issue is the increasingly aggressive stance taken against the general public by out of control police agencies around the country (with los angeles county unfortunately seeming to lead the way).  victims and survivors of all races must stand in solidarity against excessive force and police violence if we ever hope to change the system which has brutalized and murdered our loved ones for far too long.

You should list the officers responsible for the killings and their sentences, if any.
