L.A. Bus Rider Passes Out, Vomits on Herself -- and No One Calls 911 for Over an Hour

Lesson: Don't pass out on the Dash to Echo Park.
Have bus riders in Los Angeles become so jaded and antisocial that no one thinks to help a passed-out woman with vomit running down her chin for almost an hour-and-a-half?

The Eastsider L.A. reported yesterday that Echo Park resident Jamie Goodwin boarded one of the L.A. Department of Transportation's "Dash" buses on Monday afternoon, only to find an "African-American woman with a walker" slumped in her seat.

The most disturbing part of Goodwin's testimony:

Goodwin and the other passengers exchanged alarmed glances as the driver of the northbound bus that runs between Echo Park and Pico-Union allowed passengers to board through the back door to avoid contact with the unconscious woman, who had vomited on herself. "I was looking for signs of life from this woman, wondering how long this had been going on," said Goodwin, who grew upset after the driver said she had reported the unsconsious passenger to her dispatcher about two hours earlier and was awaiting assistance

LADOT spokesman Bruce Gillman says the wait was more like an hour-and-a-half.

The bus driver originally called the dispatcher around 2 p.m., says Gillman -- and when help had not arrived by 3 p.m., the driver called the dispatcher again. According to L.A. Fire Department spokesman Matt Spence, paramedics arrived at the Dash turnaround at 3:22 p.m.

So the question remains: Why did it take the bus dispatcher so long to call 911? (And why did the Fire Department take around 20 minutes to show up, but we think we know the answer to that one.)

MV Transportation, Inc. is the company contracted by LADOT to run that particular bus line. Public-relations officer Cristina Russell tells us that the dispatcher indeed works for MV, and "employees involved" have been placed on administrative leave while the company launches an internal investigation.

What's the fine for leaving a woman to possibly die in her bus seat? (Although she didn't, and is recovering at the hospital.)

$1,200 for "not timely reporting" and "a safety violation," says LADOT's Gilman. He adds that "every contract has what's called a penalty provision ... giving the city an opportunity to impose a fine."

Bus rider Goodwin told the Eastsider that she was actually the one to call 911, but LADOT maintains that the MV Transportation dispatcher did eventually summon paramedics as well.

Still -- an hour and a half? What if the woman had experienced a heart attack, or a stroke, or something more life-threatening?

"Yeah, we weren't happy with that," says Gilman.

No kidding. And as for the rest of the commuters on that ride: Next time you notice an unconscious lady in the seat next to you, how about giving L.A. some Good Samaritan points by taking two seconds to call an ambulance. Because we're kind of in the red right now.

I am a bus rider and ride the dash everyday and some of these bus drivers are so rude and nasty. I have seen some very nasty comments made about riders its so mean and uncaring. Metro ads lie when they say its easier to ride friendly metro. Its the drivers, they need training on how to treat their riders.

the passengers need to learn how to appreciate the dash, the majority don't pay the damn fare but you want the service. Passengers think that they can just get on and say what they want to say to the driver in a rude manner, well they got it twisted because the driversdo not have to take that shit off of the no paying passengers. The city should stop the service and see how they will get around.

The lady who started this whole mess is a miserable racist. How many passed out latin americans ride the bus everyday. But because the lady who you donjt really care if she was black its the black driver who you wanted in trouble in the first place. What goes around comes around. You could have quietly been a good samaritan if thats was your real goal. But you are just another racist latin american bus rider over there. You dont talk about any of the good drivers over there and Im surw they have some. U highlight the bad. Thats whats wrong with echo park. People like YOU!!!

I have lived in Echo Park for four years now. And most of the drivers are very courteous.  They put up with numerous passengers begging for free rides. Gang members and drug addicts and Very rude people.  There are some drivers with bad attitudes but I also ride the Metro bus from Sunset. And allot of those drivers have bad attitudes as well.  But in all fairness most of the drivers for both the Metro lines and dash line that serve our community are very nice and professional.  I apologize for calling you a racist because i don"t even know you. I am white and felt very uncomfortable riding the dash mostly because of the way I was treated by the latinos on board. Now I have many friends in the community and we get along well. I ride the dash down and up the hill everyday to work in Santa Monica.  But I am very upset that not enough is said about the people who actually do a good job. I am grateful for the service especially with the price of gas. Echo Park is my community as well.

The person who wrote this article obviously doesn't ride metro everyday. Also, not all people are really that heartless. If it was a youth, or if they would have been a gun shot victim,  I guarantee there would have been more immediate assistance. People are passed out on the bus constantly, the police and ambulance would get irritated if they got a call regarding every passed out person with a little puke on them. Does that mean it's okay to do nothing? Not necessarily but if your a grown ass adult and somehow your life has been reduced to being in a drug or alcohol induced stooper, slobbering vomit, while on public transportation, maybe, just maybe, you should have helped yourself a long time ago.

For someone who's referred to himself as "Onepercentah", I find it very hard to digest that you would have any knowledge of public transportation in Los Angeles.

Dollars to donuts she was assumed to be just another drunk homeless person riding the line for the whole day.

If I had a dollar for every person passed out covered in vomit I've seen riding the blue line I'd have about 4 bucks.

Or, the ones that didn't ignore her might have taken her picture or tweeted about it with their friends. I mean, that's what cellphones are for right, transmitting our every narcissistic moment?

oh, for christ's sake. as if you don't have a cellphone. not everyone who has a common piece of technology is a narcissist.

I never said I didn't have a cellphone, and the point of my comment was that it took over an hour before anyone used their "common piece of technology" to do anything for anyone else but themselves.
