Los Angeles Mayoral Poll 2013 Shows that Voters who Grade Villaraigosa an "F" or "D" Want Zev Yaroslavsky or Wendy Greuel

BobHertzberg.jpg
Bob Hertzberg couldn't be mayor of L.A. because he wasn't that handsome.
A poll says 68 percent of Angelenos have no idea who they want for Los Angeles mayor in 2013. Of those who know, pixie Controller Wendy Greuel is doing better than indecisive, undeclared Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who's doing better than "I'm Latino -- really!" Councilman Eric Garcetti.

It's great that a third of 1,100 people polled already care. After all, L.A. voters don't watch City Hall as they should. Many can't name a council member. They vote for most handsome or best dresser. Some intriguing trends in Loyola Marymount University's poll:

One fascinating question shows that of Angelenos who give Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa a "D" or an "F," Zev Yaroslavsky and Wendy Greuel are well in front. They are trailed by Jan Perry, Eric Garcetti, Kevin James and Austin Beutner, in that order:

Los Angeles Mayoral Race 2013

Political wags wrote in 2005 that a "coalition of voters" elected Antonio as mayor.
In fact, voters do not form coalitions.

Voters go with their gut. The camera was kinder to Antonio, with his nice teeth and snappy hairdo. The camera was unkind to earnest, shambling former California Speaker Bob Hertzberg and too-camera-shy Mayor James Hahn (now a judge).

Hertzberg didn't make the runoff between Hahn and Villaraigosa. Yet he was eerily prescient, writing up a report warning about a fiscal disaster coming to L.A. city government.

L.A. voters were bored by such serious issues -- at least in 2005.

This new LMU poll shows a big difference in mayoral preferences between those who think L.A. is headed the "right direction" and those who think the city is headed the "wrong direction."

People think L.A. is headed the right direction? Anyway, the poll shows:

This very season, Los Angeles is facing a possible municipal bankruptcy. It has been heading that way for years.

As the Weekly has reported, Villaraigosa spends very little time on serious mayoral duties and work. He goes to a lot of ceremonies and photo ops, and has begun spending even more time out of town (for key background see the Weekly's 2008 report, "The All About Me Mayor," and sidebar "How Mayor Villaraigosa Spends his 16 Hour Days").

L.A. has the potential to become the first really big American city to go bankrupt, much as New York City nearly went bankrupt in 1975.

City government employee unions and Villaraigosa are going to war and things are going to get ugly -- or juicy, if that's how you see things.

Does this mean that 2013's mayoral race will draw voters toward substance over style?

Highly unlikely!

But the LMU poll shows that the race is wide open. So you never know. Here's another fascinating trend in the data. Highly educated people prefer Zev Yaroslavsky and Wendy Greuel, while uneducated people prefer Eric Garcetti and Jan Perry:

If nothing else, the poll gives new grist to the politically addicted folks who are debating this race months before most voters pay it any attention at all.

A message from YJ Draiman for Mayor of Los Angeles 2013 Dear Los Angelinos, Los Angeles should be the most wonderful city in the world. We have great weather, a multitude of people with a varied background, an unrivaled enterprise and culture, a gateway to the Far East with major ports for business and industry. The LA leadership performance has been failing for many years. The corruption is running rampant. Los Angeles is on the verge of bankruptcy. We must replace the current leadership if we are to survive the current financial disaster and mishandling of city revenues and assets. We must restore fiscal responsibility to LA City Hall or we are doomed.  The City Hall insiders have been bought and paid for by the special interests and have totally ignored the average residents/stakeholders and their concerns and hardships over and over. It is imperative that we stop this culture of corruption and favoritism. This is the twenty fourth hour. Time is running out and we must begin to create a better future for Los Angeles. I care about Los Angeles, a wonderful and thriving city. I strongly believe that we need a strong and determined leader that can bring people together to solve difficult challenges with innovative solutions. With my track record as Neighborhood rejuvenator and being an advocate for neighborhood councils and residents/stakeholders all over this City, I believe I am the only choice to put Los Angeles back on the road to economic health and confidence in its leadership.  As a unified and cohesive force we can revive and bring back Los Angeles to its deserved fame and status. Join me in our campaign to rebuild Los Angeles and create a sustainable future for the residents/stakeholders and our families. “Let us take back our city and make it Los Angeles governed by the people for the people” YJ Draiman http://www.yjdraimanformayor.o...

The Current elected officials are not qualified to be the next Mayor of Los Angeles! Rev A good argument against current administration officials running for mayor is that Wendy Greuel who has been in the city council since 2012 and is "all of a sudden" finding problems as controller and as a now mayoral candidate that she didn't seem to notice as a council member for over 9 years. That Eric Garcetti has been "at the helm of city council for over a decade of decline and deterioration." That Jan Perry is much like the others she has been in office since 2001. That Austin Beutner can't possibly escape blame after having run 13 city departments, with the position of First Deputy Mayor and Chief Executive for Economic and Business Policy, as well as General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power 1994-1996. None of them have objected or put up an argument while in office against the policies that have brought Los Angeles to the verge of bankruptcy and total economic disaster, the worst in 8 decades.Austin Beutner pulls out of the race for mayor of Los Angeles. And that LA’s outgoing Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa makes a strong argument for letting a complete outsider give it a go. An outsider has no allegiance to the political machine.  Los Angeles must start with a clean slate at City Hall. From the current list of candidates, I can see only two outsiders that are qualified; YJ Draiman & Kevin James. We have an opportunity to elect and put in Los Angeles City Hall a new Mayor and 8 out of the 15 Councilmen that are up for election. This could change the face of the administration drastically and bring about a change of operation, where sound decisions and transparency will be the new mandate for LA City Hall. The mayor of the city of Los Angeles must be a leader like no other leader, he must be an exceptional administrator and trustworthy. He must have top notch advisers to advice him in bringing LA to economic health. A city of Los Angeles with about 4 million people and spans an area of 465 square miles that has an economic engine that by far surpasses many countries; it is an enormous responsibility and must be managed properly.

Los Angeles Economic Development – YJ Draiman

It is time to remake Los Angeles in the image of our boldest vision – a city of healthy communities with good schools and quality education, innovative companies in new and emerging sectors, quality open space, improved public transportation, a range of mobility and housing options; and above all, a prosperous and productive middle class equipped with the skills and education to create a better future.

It is time to get serious about designing a real economic development program linked to investments in healthy communities. I recently proposed to make Los Angeles the World Capital of Renewable Energy, Energy and Water Efficiency. We have the climate, the manpower, the resources and technology. We must promote energy and water efficiency in all sectors of LA’s economy. This by itself can save the city billions and bring many jobs and economic growth into Los Angeles. We should promote real estate gentrification, affordable housing, urban infill building, economic development and clean tech sorted through the parts of redevelopment worth retaining and retooling combined with some newer elements of economic development necessary to realize this vision of healthy communities.

In the past five years many businesses in LA have closed down or moved out. There are many vacant properties (commercial and residential). Many people have moved out of LA. They can not afford the cost of living, the high taxation, the stifling bureaucracy and varied rules and regulations that choke business development.

We have a dysfunctional leadership in Los Angeles, an inefficient workforce, a demand for entitlement, and crippling budget deficits that are creating an environment of uncertainty for many companies who want to hire people, but are afraid to do so. Capital is stagnant and unattainable, frozen by an over swing of regulation and bureaucracy. We want to get Los Angeles working again, yet many of our wounds are self inflicted, as LA bureaucrats go to work every day piling more regulations and taxes onto the very businesses we ask to grow and create more jobs. This situation must change, or we are doomed.

It is imperative that we reverse this trend.

A free America... means just this: individual freedom for all, rich or poor, or else this system of government we call democracy is only an expedient to enslave man to the machine and make him like it.

The Pension Crisis – YJ Draiman Pension reform plan must be devised and put into affect as soon as possible. Every day we wait is an economic drain and an ultimate cause for the failure of government fiscal responsibility, it also increase the potential for bankruptcy. It is an economic suicide and a dereliction of duty for officials not to devise and implement a viable Pension reform, with a short term plan and a long term plan, allowing for modification when necessary. We have to make an equitable Pension reform plan that all parties can live with. It is in the best interest of everyone, we all have to compromise.A legal battle will only exasperate the financial situation and will have a disastrous affect on the financial sustainability of the government and the people.Stop bickering among yourselves and jockeying for position; you are playing with people’s livelihood. Do the jobs you were elected to do or else resign. YJ Draiman http://www.yjdraiman.org PSI look forward to the day when only statesmen will run for office.A statesman is a servant leader who is not concerned about his political future, but in what is best for the people. A statesman is open-minded, logical, intelligent and compassionate. A statesman reconciles conflict and looks into the future.Unfortunately, many elected officials are not statesmen or even leaders. They are in office to make themselves feel important, to gain power and sometimes to get money. This kind of elected official is caustic, negative and hateful who stirs up messes, acts self-righteous, gets personal and calls other people names, and is the first to claim he is not a "politician" and that he "is working for the people." Some think success is getting their picture in the paper handing out a check. Some elected officials think their job is to be against the chief and other elected officials regardless of the issue. Please think about the kind of people we need in public office to make good decisions for the present and the future. We don't need gainers; we don't need self-serving politicians. We need positive leaders and statesmen. Talk to those in office and those running against them. Look at their service history and decide for yourself if they are true statesmen. This type of elected official is not a statesman. A statesman does not buy votes with "quick fix" hand-outs. A statesman makes the tough decisions. He considers all his constituents. He has a vision and a long-term plan. http://www.yjdraiman.org

As more people discover Kevin James, let's hope they don't jump to the pot holder and brochure induced knee jerk comatose voting to the names they know now i.e. Wendy, Garcetti, Perry. If you give Villaraigosa an "F" then you can't possibly go for more of the same. Ironically, the blissfully unaware who give the Mayor an "A" are breaking big time for Zev and Garcetti. THAT should tell you something!

Ok, This one i can't believe: "Bob Hertzberg couldn't be Mayor of LA because he wasn't that handsome?"  Really, LA Weekly?  Somebody better tell Zev!!

Those that give Villaraigosa an "F" (which will be lots of voters) put Kevin James in second place in the current field of announced candidates (Zev is not in the field of announced candidates), above Garcetti and Perry.  That is an excellent position for a first-time candidate and City Hall outsider 11 months before the election. Lets get these crooks out of office!

It is obvious to all that the current Mayor was a great disappointment.  The biggest concern for many is that he will be running for County Supervisor when Molina terms out.

What I want to know is who are the imbeciles giving Taco Tony an "A" ??

Wait... I guess that would be those LADWP ditch diggers making a hundred grand to smoke dope and hang out in strip clubs during the workday.
