Obama: Marijuana Dispensary Busts by Feds Aren't About to Stop

If you think President Obama is a liar for promising to hold back on federal prosecution of medical marijuana and then seeing his feds bust more pot shops than they did under George W. Bush, maybe you're not listening to him carefully enough.

Obama says that, perhaps, you misinterpreted his words when he said he wouldn't "use Justice Department resources to try and circumvent state laws about medical marijuana."

Here's how he wiggles out of that one:

What I specifically said was that we were not going to prioritize prosecutions of persons who are using medical marijuana. I never made a commitment that somehow we were going to give carte blanche to large-scale producers and operators of marijuana ...

That's what he told Rolling Stone this week when the magazine asked him "what's up" with his administration's heavy prosecution of marijuana businesses in medical-legal states like California, where Oaksterdam University was raided by agents earlier this month.

The mag noted that there have been more federal dispensary busts under Obama than under Bush although, to be fair, the medical marijuana trade exploded right about the time Obama took office.

"Here's what's up," the president said.

Sounding a bit like L.A.'s own District Attorney, Steve Cooley, Obama argues that, medical or not, "commercial operations" that sell illicit drugs are not kosher, and he can't just ignore them.

Cooley, along with City Attorney Carmen Trutanich, has argued that for-profit marijuana retailers aren't really even allowed under state law, which they say was intended only to legalize the sharing of collectively grown pot on a nonprofit basis.

(The guy who co-wrote California's pot shop law, John Vasconcellos, told us this interpretation is incorrect and that the legislation was purposely vague so as to appease factions and allow for-profit marijuana trade).

Anyway, Obama follows the prosecutors' line of thinking, saying that, while everyday potheads probably don't need to worry about feds busting down their doors, big cannabis businesses are another story:

... You have large-scale, commercial operations that may supply medical marijuana users, but in some cases may also be supplying recreational users. In that situation, we put the Justice Department in a very difficult place if we're telling them, "This is supposed to be against the law, but we want you to turn the other way." That's not something we're going to do.

Sounds like pot retailers would be safer selling their weed on the street.

if he, the prez, is soooo worried about "drugs in America", then he should use our troops in Afghanistan, who shouldnt be there anyways, to stop all that poppy-growing they have going on over there....since the "war in Afghanistan", the manufacturing of poppies for heroin has exploded, and now that country is exporting tons of the stuff every day....it's their biggest cash cow, responsible for like more than 75% of the country's gross income....THAT is a problem, not a little "pot club" down on 10th street, Anytown, U.S.A., as that little "pot shop" only allows people that are legally able to use cannabis in to use any MMJ, they aren't giving it to kids or just anyone....but heroin is ALWAYS WRONG FOR EVERYONE!!! Whether it's Morphine or heroin, its the same deadly garbage.....MMJ has never killed anyone, never hurt anyone, never.....YOU ARE BECOMING 2-FACED OBAMA......NOT KEEPING PROMISES AND TRYING TO IMPRESS REPUBS W A "WAR ON DRUGS" OR WHATEVER YOURE UP TO IS CRAP!!! THE PEOPLE WILL SPEAK THIS NOVEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as I know, most dispensaries require "patients" to have a prescription for medical marijuana. So if the government is worried about the dispensaries distributing weed to "recreational users," shouldn't they be cracking down on the "doctors" that are signing off on prescriptions for any one & everyone for nothing but their own profit?? Anyone can walk into one of those "clinics" & say "I have headaches," pay up to $80 and walk out with a prescription for marijuana. So anyone with that doctors recommendation becomes a patient, not a recreational user. Therefor, that becomes the fault of these "doctors" not the dispensaries. Just a though.

Nicole, I think you may misunderstand how other states, like Oregon, process Medicinal Marijuana applicants. It is based on a minimum of 3 years medical records for the condition that a patient has. Unfortunately, this may mean that a few people with cancer may die before they even get a card to relieve their pain. It costs $200 each year for the card and the marijuana at the dispensary isn't cheap either, but there is no profit involved either. If marijuana were just decriminalized, we wouldn't have any of these problems and we wouldn't be footing the tax bill for the thousands of people in our prison system who are there for marijuana alone, not to mention all the money we pay for the DEA and Officers of the Law who could be catching the real bad people out there. Prohibition didn't work in the 30's and FDR abolished it after 3 months in office. I think it's time to abolish this prohibition on an herb, which grows naturally and has many healing components.

Does this really shock anyone that our president did this to us?  I am compelled to remind you that Obama signed into law the NDAA (on new year's eve, no less) allowing the military to indefinitely detain any AMERICAN CITIZEN as a "terror suspect" on US soil and ship them off to Guantánamo Bay without trial.

This is not hyperbole, this is now authorized by law, and President Barack Obama is the person responsible for signing this legislature into law.

I voted for Obama last time (as an independent), but I won't make the same mistake twice.

Party loyalists, he's all yours.

Bush is the one who signed the Patriot Law into our government, not Obama...what I don't understand is why it is still in effect.

The statewide campaign to loosen restrictions is now gathering signatures. It's called the Calif. Cannabis Health Hemp Initiative 2012 and it will not only save billions in incarceration costs, but will save the planet. Hemp farming heals farmlands, and provides alternative energy to oil. Help the campaign, join us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/grou...

The federal law, i.e. "Schedule I Cannabis" is a damned lie on its face. That makes it null and void.  When will our local sheriffs start protecting our liberty?

Once you realize that "party" really means nothing any more it will stop hurting your brain so much. Republican, Democrat, it's all the same garbage. They are all slaves to their corporate masters and lobbyist scumbags.

No help for medical marijuana, no to Obama! I found a great medical marijuana book that has great recipes, uses less valuable marijuana, and has smaller candies to use for pain on a daily basis: MARIJUANA - Guide to Buying, Growing, Harvesting, and Making Medical Marijuana Oil and Delicious Candies to Treat Pain and Ailments by Mary Bendis, Second Edition. How about just $2.99 for great e-book on medical marijuana? This book has great recipes for easy marijuana oil, delicious Cannabis Chocolates, and tasty Dragon Teeth Mints.

Is this really why Obama was elected? I mean I remember in 2008 when he was said to be the alternative to the old guard. He is anti medical weed, has deported more illegals than Bush did, and has spent more time on the golf course than Bush did. I'm no fan of Romney either, he would be so far in the pocket of big business its not funny. But Obama is a real let down.

Well anyone who believed he would allow pot shops was stupid. He is a carer politician and lies as quick as any thief. Where have you been all your life, history repeats it self again and again. If they are so worried about people or companies making big profit off pot let every one grow their own and hey, no problem. Seems there is more to this issue then they claim. Big pill makers would really hate for it be legal they would lose to much money, the politicians would lose bribe money. It is okay, this issue is not going away any time soon. The population of MJ people is quickly growing. Make your money now Politicians and pill guys cause it will soon end.

The idea of waging a war on drugs, against a relatively benign plant like marijuana, is one thing. But when it ravages so viciously that completely innocent people are destroyed, to hide corruption amongst government officials, it becomes a plague.

What am I talking about?

This film:http://www.expendable.tv

So deep is the corruption, that the Australian media won't report it... won't report cables which prove criminal acts by their own ministers in office (see them for yourelf, in the reports).

Granted, the media there has a closed remit and non-plural ownership, but this speaks for itself. A wall of absolute silence.

The victim is now seriously ill, whilst they basically point the other way. Whilst they smear her deceased father because dead men can't sue. Whilst they cover the truth, and lead a gullible Australian public by the nose.

This must be the clearest example in the world of a 'war' taking a life of its own, with innocent human beings who fall under the wheel, being disregarded by the powerful self-interest forces of government. It sickens me.

The "limbo" between medical legal and thefederal schedule of MJ creates this problem...We went from black market to greymarket and people are still making millions... Fix the problem by making astate grow operations with tax stamps...it will pay for itself and drive the HumboldtMafia into the sea. Med MJ will be sold for 30 dollars an OZ by state growers(certified, inspected). No huge profits will simply purge the greedy folks outof the biznezz! Plus, the ridiculous nature of hippies in lab coats making recommendationsto patients.... The next step is to AUDIT the med MJ cardholders and “weed” outthe teenagers and fakers.

Next case please…

Funny, they asked the DOJ to turn their heads during the "Fast and Furious" operation and that had life ending consequences. Now legitimate businesses that are providing competition to drug cartels are out of the question.
