Porn Condom Mandate Supported by Majority of Angelenos

You love them, you really do. Condoms, that is.

A majority of Angelenos are down with condoms in porn, as spelled out in a proposed countywide ballot initiative by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation that would mandate such a precaution for the adult video industry.

AHF also says it has collected the signatures it needs to get the measure on the November ballot.

The organization today released the results of a poll showing that 63 percent of L.A. County voters support the measure: Women would vote yes at a rate of 77 percent.

The survey looked at 1,046 likely voters during one week in March.

The group also says that it has 235,000 signatures to support putting the initiative on the ballot in-hand, more than the 232,153 required by June 5.

The "Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act" would require porn makers to get county health permits that would mandate condom use as part of the deal. The law would be modeled after regulations that apply to massage parlors and bath houses.

The city of L.A. already requires condoms for adult video shoots on permitted studio sets as a result of a similar effort by the organization.

AHF president Michael Weinstein says:

... We have reached two critical milestones in our efforts on condom use in adult films in Los Angeles County ... Voters overwhelmingly see this issue as a matter of public health, worker safety and fairness ...

The porn industry has been fighting mandatory condoms tooth-and-nail. Adult video leaders say consumers won't go for smut shot with condoms.

But here's the fine print: Condoms are already required in porn statewide. It's just that California doesn't have the resources to enforce the law. The same might be said for the city of L.A. And the county isn't exactly bursting with money to enforce this either.

The industry has threatened to move out of town over this. So far the threats have been all bark.
