Abdul Arian: 19-Year-Old Leads LAPD on Crazy Chase, Shoots it Out With Cops, Dies: VIDEO

Updated at the bottom: The LAPD says suspect told a 911 operator he had a weapon and was "gonna have to pull out my gun on them." First posted at 11:38 p.m. Wednesday

As L.A. watched it live on TV, a 19-year-old man engaged in a shootout with police in which he ultimately died.

He appeared to be driving the kind of unmarked Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor favored by law enforcement, though it's not clear if the vehicle played a roll in the chase: They're widely available on the used market.

The teen was fatally shot, and no officers, apparently, were wounded following the shooting on the 101 freeway in Woodland hills.

Video (after the jump) shows that the suspect stopped the car across lanes near Canoga Avenue as a black-and-white cruiser nudged against the driver's side door.

The man got out of the passenger side, turned to shoot, ran and turned to shoot again. It appears he's hit by gunfire both times, at the least.

View more videos at: http://nbclosangeles.com.

He was no match for the men and women in blue.

LAPD Officer Karen Rayner says the pursuit started about 9:50 p.m. near Plummer Street and Shirley Avenue in Northridge when cops pulled the guy over and he stopped only to take off and lead them on the car chase.

The driver was suspected, at the least, of reckless driving, and during the chase he blew through red lights.

The California Highway Patrol tweeted that it had closed down the entire freeway as authorities investigated the shooting death.

[Added]: The shooting happened around 10 p.m.

Fox 11 News reported that the suspect had been speaking with his mom via cellphone during the chase. His mom was in touch with cops, apparently, and said he wanted to stop and get something out of his trunk, a move the police would not approve.

[Update at 12:42 p.m. Thursday]: Relatives identified the teen as Abdul Arian, a Taft High School graduate from Winnetka.

An uncle told CBS Los Angeles that the 19-year-old wanted to be a cop but feared police.

Family members claimed he did not have a gun last night, and the uncle insisted that "he hated guns."

However, Arian's Facebook page indicates he spent time at a shooting range last week:

... Just came back from the shooting range. and got some blood on my hand thanks to my lil cousin lol

Two photos on the Facebook profile depict police in action, including one shot of what appears to show him being pulled over:

arian pulled over.JPG

The LAPD today couldn't confirm or deny for us whether the suspect had a gun and opened fire on officers, which most of us thought, perhaps erroneously, after viewing the TV footage. He did appear on video to turn toward the officers more than once as he ran, and reports indicate that about three cops opened fire.

His Facebook profile indicates a recent breakup. And his most recent status update, about 24 hours ago, says he's "wasting my time -- at California State University Northridge."

On April 8 he posted this:

done crying...tired of trying...yeah im smiling...but inside, im dying

An separate "RIP" page has been set up on Facebook in memory of Arian, here.

arian rip.JPG

On Arian's own page he indicates that the 101 freeway in Woodland Hills is "home sweet home."

[Update at 2:23 p.m. Thursday]: The LAPD today issued a statement noting the suspect's threatening comments to a 911 operator during a chase in which he allegedly drove "without regard to public safety." He told the operator, according to the department:

"I have a gun."

"I've been arrested before for possession of destructive devices, I'm not afraid of the cops."

"If they pull their guns, I'm gonna have to pull my gun out on them."

After he exited his car, police said:

The suspect took what appeared to be an aggressive "shooting stance" several times, extending his arms out, and pointing an unknown object at the officers.

This caused the officer at the scene to believe he was armed with a handgun.

He was not.

If he had a history of depression he was most likely suicidal. As someone who is aware of what depression and anti-depressants does to a person, I believe he is now at peace. He has saved himself  from a lifetime of pain and misery.

God Bless.

The ignorance being displayed in front of me is laughable. Read a book, educate yourselves. But, why argue with a bunch of closed minded robots that'll believe any & everything the american media will tell you. I'll just pray for you all :)

Rest in peace my beautiful cousin. You're in heaven now watching over us. I love you so much & I'm glad our last time together was amazing! Its crazy to see how people get so bold over the internet with their opinions & assumptions. The audacity & in-sensitiveness over this whole matter is beyond me. Just know God is watching you, & pray this doesn't happen to you or a loved one. In a way, I hope it does, just so you can swallow these words you are all writing.

He should have not run and taken the police on a wild pursuit, if in fact they say he is an innocent boy(right). He notified 911 saying he had a gun, these people are suing for a foolish amount of money, greedy , greedy, greedy, they just see money $$$$$.  Try and look at the other side of the picture, police guarding themselves to go home to their families. This law suit is wasting tax payers money,  DISMISSED.....

it's not clear if the vehicle played a "roll" in the case? This guy is a writer? Does L.A. Weekly even have editors anymore?Anyway, kudos to the LAPD for taking care of this scumbag. I love the morons who post idiotic remarks about how the cops are no good and all that. This degenerate risked lives by driving like a maniac, and was so stupid that he pointed whatever he had at the cops in a threatening manner. Not much of a concept of reality there, pal. Unfortunately, they did what they had to do and I personally don't care. Yeah, everyone loves their children, and most of us were raised by our parents to not act like thugs.

In this case the police clearly performed their job admirable during a very dangerous situation. This young Middle Eastern male gangster threatens to kill police officers, who are simply engaging in routine duties. But somehow these foreign family members tell the public he was such a good boy. These cretins are obviously immoral and criminally minded themselves. It is clear this young man was engaged in attempted murder, so how could he possibly be a good boy. Obviously, law enforcement needs to keep a more vigilant and watchfully eye on a community that minimizes attempted murder. Makes one wonder watch are they teaching their sons.

He did not threaten the cops and I would know beacuse I live with him

Tsimsum

If you lived with him you should do the moral thing and tell his family not to try to file a lawsuit against the city. What did the city do wrong? If it was 2 shots and he died, it's the same as 90 shots and him dying. Making a profit off of his death is just sick.

This kid was a complete idiot.  He should have droped the phone and raised his hands or raised his hands with the phone rather than pointing it at the police in a shooting stance. Or he could have stayed in the car or dropped to the payment when he exited the car. DO NOT POINT "ANYTHING" AT THE POLICE OR TAKE A SHOOTING STANCE.  I'm sorry he got killed but he brought it on his self.  Rubber bullets or a tasser would not have been effective at that distance.   nuff said!

I've always held the belief that if you point something at the cops they are allowed to dump their clip into you. If the cops are coming at you guns drawn, just fucking surrender if you don't want to risk getting lit up.

If it was a white guy doing that, he would still be alive...oh wait.  A white guy would never do something like that.  Nevermind.

It is so good that people like this to be out from the streets for ever. Police force is there by the society to to keep peace and enforce the laws of the mentioned society. When some one is asked by the law enforcing force to stop, he or she has to stop and obey the law. If you don`t, that simply mean that you are not a law abiding ember of the society, then it is better that person stay out. Personally I thank the law enforcement people for trying  keeping the streets safe for the rest rest vast majority.

I fell sorry fit the guy and his family he was a nice guy , why the police didn't shot on his leg so he can't move that way he would be alive 19 years old so sad why the police shot him the could get him he did not had gun , God bless him he was a nice guy and i am sad for his family ,

P1

Nice guy?  According to the story, he's been arrested for being in possession of a destructive device!  Was he going to chant something then blow himself up along with INNOCENT people?  Now he violates another law, no matter how small it is, takes off on the Officer, insuing a persuit.  Drives on the wrong side of the road putting INNOCENT lives at danger.  Then simulates a hand gun in his hand and points it at Officers.  Nice???  Wow...I wonder what a person would have to do to be considered mean in your definition of "nice".

This kid is a selfish bastard, doesn't care about life or his parents.  And you can't tell me he loved his parents if he is putting them through misery right now being the little punk that he is.  I have no respect for people who give up on life and I also have no sympathy for them.  As for the family, I'm sorry you had a son who didn't care about you enough to ask for help, I'm sure the devil will have a nice chat with him.

police are not trained to shoot someone's leg!!! when they shoot, they aim for the chest.

Croftrobertcroft

Last post I meant executed not excited.

Croftrobertcroft
Croftrobertcroft

No, you really do have to see the gun or toy gun in order to start shooting.

Look at the Lapd history. They are famous for being trigger happy. These cops today are not very good at what they do.

They have to be cooler in a situation like this and not get so amped up over a chase. Probably should have not even chased him.

Croftrobertcroft
Croftrobertcroft

In last post I meant these cops tha shoot him today. Most lapd men ar very good a what they do and really handle a situation like this well. Not today though.

P1
P1

Hmm I don't think you can READ lips looking at a computer monitor, but I'm sure you can READ words... Now to rip you a new one, are you a cop?  I'm sure you're not, have you ever been in a gun fight?  I'm sure you haven't.  Have you ever attended a police academy?  I think not because if you have, you would not have posted your comments.

So you're telling me that a police officer should wait for someone to point an "object" and verify that it's a REAL gun during night time hours?  And once they figure out that it's a real gun (after determining its not a squirt gun or any other toy gun), the suspect will have emptied at least half the magazine on the officer, and if one of those unlucky bullets hit the officer in the head or any other vital organs, then what Mr. Genius who knows everything about Officer Involved Shootings?  I'm pretty sure that copper would be dead and the suspect will start shooting at OTHER officers and OTHER innocent civilians.

Please educate yourself more before you start typing away all that nonsense and make yourself look ignorant.  The 19 year old ADULT, not teenager, deserved what he got from the officers that thankfully ended his life before he could do actual harm to them or innocent people.

Croftrobertcrft
Croftrobertcrft

Read my lips. You have to see the gun!! This was the Keystone Cops. It's the Pasadena cops. They should have seen a gun. There is risk being a police officer. They can't just shoot first and check it out later.

As I said, these guys get way to amped up on these chases. They should be above that.

Nosneb118
Nosneb118

Do you know how dark it gets at night>???? You're just not sure if it's a gun. Plus he was running away backwards like if he was engaging the cops. Plus, he said on the 911 call that he had a gun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OPEN YOUR EYES. Police had every right to kill this stupid ass.

Croftrobertcroft
Croftrobertcroft

The cops were very wrong in shooting him. They did not see a gun. They were trigger happy and that is not right.

There is danger in being a cop. Again, the practically excited this guy. They were not trained very well. They should have taken cover and seen if there was a gun. If the cops keep this kind of behavior up there will me more unarmed people killed. The cops should be fired for this.

yaya
yaya

more and more cops are killing unarmed people but its the gesture that changes a situation. If someone is about to swing their fist and hit you,,,you either gonna try and duck, or swing back.....its natural instinct. their natural instinct is to shoot.

No asshole, the Moron was very wrong endangering innocent  lives by driving at high rates of speed like he's in a video game ! Dumb ass , he should have pulled over with his hands up and that would have been that . Who the hell thinks this idiot should be given a "chance" to see if he had a weapon or not ?He was already showing erratic behavior by driving like a moron .Most of society do not run around like ignorant fools , oh wait they do .

Mdemetrio
Mdemetrio

Here is another IDIOT. So you are saying, wait til he fires off rounds to see if he does or does not have a gun. He kills someone (maybe you) cause you were stuck  in traffic like those innocent people were when he got in front of their vehicle. Then this would be the comments made after that, " they should have taken action, they are trained, it's their job, they should get fired and placed in jail. Oh yeah, and my family should get 10 million dollars for my death." No matter what, IDIOTS are like bung holes everyone has one, ur mine!
