Sledge Hammer, Porn Star, Dies After LAPD Tasers Him

Adult performer Sledge Hammer, a.k.a. Marland Anderson, died over the weekend after he was tased by at least one LAPD officer more than a week ago.

The 6 foot, 1 inch porn star was restrained in a gurney and en route to a hospital for a psychiatric hold when he broke a handcuff and lifted the bed from a floor as he stood up, prompting an officer to use a taser, according to the Los Angeles Times and other reports.

But adult director Stoney Curtis told Xbiz ...

... the story happened a little differently:

The paramedics came and picked up the 39-year-old, but he suffered anxiety and wanted out of the ambulance. So they dropped Anderson off back at home and called cops, who proceeded to stun him:

... They decided to break out their tasers and just tasered him excessively until the point where he went into cardiac arrest. After he went into cardiac arrest, they rushed him to the hospital and revived him. But they estimated that his heart had stopped beating for 10 minutes. They got his heart beating again and put him on a respirator, but he had massive swelling in the brain from the loss of oxygen.

Anderson's girlfriend, performer Alexa Cruz, told Xbiz she called 911 that Sunday (April 8) to report that he was having a severe anxiety attack.

She said Anderson had a knife and she wanted to prevent him from hurting himself. In a struggle for the knife she said she cut her finger accidentally. Cruz told this to the website Luke is Back:

This was not a domestic violence situation at all so I want to make that totally clear. This man was being tortured by his own mind and suffering from severe insomnia. He came out peacefully when the police arrived and told them repeatedly that he was very tired and scared. I told them about his state and made it clear that he needed a hospital, NOT jail. What happened next, I did not see but according to the doctors/nurses I spoke to, he got scared and started to panic, and the LAPD responded by tazing him 6 times.

She tweeted this after his death Friday:

... The way the police handled this was horrible.

Cruz told outlets the Anderson had anxiety and depression problems that were exacerbated by his marijuana use.

But she claimed to Luke is Back that "he never took steroids."

An autopsy was pending, according to City News Service.

In 2010 alleged murderer Stephen Hill, also a porn star, died in a standoff with the LAPD after he was hit with less-than-lethal weapons rounds and fell or took a dive off a cliff.

Never ever call the police if you have been smoking way too much pot. Just let the buzz wear off.

Steroids cause enlarged hearts....easier for a heart attack to happen when the heart is enlarged. When a long time steroid user of this nature has to undergo extreme aerobic conditions (fighting to get free, extreme level of stress for prolonged time) their hearts are not used to working that hard for that amount of time due to the nature of weight lifting ("burst" exercise) so their cardiovascular capacity as far aerobic goes is not that great (look at fighters that abuse roids....no gas tank at all). This poor aerobic threshold is also due to the fact that roids put extra muscle on your body that your heart was never designed to handle. All the extra muscle that a roid user adds is just more tissue that the heart has to pump blood through. This makes makes the already enlarged heart have to work even harder....plus the fact that "who-knows-what" drug may have also been in the mix (coke, meth). - Personal Trainer/MMA Coach/ Engineering major.

Police are using tasers too quickly.  It's as if they're too lazy to use other tactics and are thus resorting to the taser.  I hope the family of this dead man see a lawyer and issue a lawsuit against the police involved in this.

This is of late becoming too common...an encounter with police ends up with people dying in suspicious circumstances.Someone in the justice department must be asleep on their jobs to notice a pattern and open some investigations.Even children are being tasered and handcuffed.Others getting shot becuase their cell phones were thought to be a gun.Even the most foolish policeman can tell a basic difference between a gun and a wallet or cellphon even in poor lightning.

What part of the story made him a sleeze?  What in your code of morality made him a sleeze? Based on your comments I think you're a sleeze and perhaps you deserve to be tased to death. oh.. the perspective of morality flips and now you are the same as the guy you think deserved to die. So whats your moral stand point again?

@Jaim:disqus - Well what do you recommend they do? And when NON LETHAL force is being used these people are already on stimulants. There heart rate is around 120-150. Now add adrenaline to the equation and they are in the 200 rate easily. But for real what should the police do? use nurf guns?

Admit that tasers are highly lethal, for starters?  Lots of people have been killed by them.

MWo
MWo

"Highly lethal"?? Do you know what the word "highly" means? 99.75% of people that are hit with a taser have NO adverse effect aside from bleeding of minor burns (similar to sun burn). In the police academy they tase fellow officers. Even in some paramedic school they do it. How many have died? NONE....Not one. Why would they tase each other if a taser by it self was deadly? The nature of the job puts cops in the position to be blamed for another persons drug us or underlaying medical condition. Cop (most the time) are there when people go crazy due to a an imbalance in the bodys system (either drugs or medical issue). There body is going haywire. The body is dying...... They go crazy and the cops are called. The person then sees the cops and are hit with added adrenaline. So no I WIL NOT ADMIT THEY ARE HIGHLY LETHAL. Please answer my question now...... What should the do? punch him in the face? Probably has a higher rate of death and a higher rate of serious injury....... Police are put in these situations. They were called for help. They didn't just show up and start tasing people.

my first thought.   piggie saw a man he couldnt intimidate

If you taser someone in an alerted /depressed state it increases the heart rate every time it happens  (6xs) is ridiculous. Just another story about the police over reacting, they saw a big black man and automatically tased him til he couldn't move. As a black man that has lived all over the world (military) I have never experienced prejudice that I have in Los Angeles or anywhere else in the United States. Punk ass cops beating down the black man because of there short comings. The man got killed because of his size and skin color, enough said.

MWo

I'm sorry did I say committed a crime? No..... I DIDN'T! And if you read the same article I did you don't know the circumstances leading up to the cops being there. My argument wasn't over whether a crime was committed or not. Please work on reading your comprehension.

Legal1
Legal1

He broke NO law.  Why is it okay to tase him at all?  Believe it or not, it is illegal to commit someone unless they are a danger to others.  He was not considered a danger to others since he was not under arrest.  They were having him sent for evaluation.  That is NOT a crime.  So now he is dead because he did not want to go to the hospital after being cuffed for no crime.  He is then tased and tackled and handcuffed and later dies for what?  Not a crime?  Really?  That is just too much.  A man is dead for no crime.

Funny how many people have died from cops using "non-lethal" measures.

Excited delirium to a tee. A taser DOES NOT have enough electricity to kill someone. If it did they would be illegal to use as a non lethal tactic. Also @sketter how do you chemically sedate someone if you cant get close enough to stick a needle in them? And even if you sedate a person with excited delirium they still have a very high risk of death. The only difference is every one would think EMS killed him because they sedated him. People are so quick to blame the people that put THEIR LIFE on the line so people like you are safe. And to the "Why 6 times???" thing...... You have NEVER been around somebody with excited delirium or someone on PCP!

Most likely he is bipolar. In a manic state you suffer from insomnia & anxiety & restlessness. As usual, dumb ass cops can't handle a simple situation. Just like they shoot 90 rounds at that kid last week that was unarmed.

"The paramedics came and picked up the 39-year-old, but he suffered anxiety and wanted out of the ambulance. So they dropped Anderson off back at home and called cops, who proceeded to stun him:" I believe this statement to be false.. I have been an EMT for several years, and we cannot just turn the squad around an take a pt back home that has an altered mental status... If a cop tells us they are a "pink slip" they are going to the hospital, we cannot change that. We have Drs that we have to answer to, its called a medical director..  and I don't believe for a min that the Dr said " yeah, go ahead and take him back home". I don't know a single EMS worker that would chose to go to court and explain WHY they took the pt back home.. Sorry, but Im calling BS!

I took my brother into the hospital after he charge me and we got into a fist fight because he was suffering from anxiety and insomnia ( he was up for 4 days). On the way to the hospital , he thought we were Jews running from the Germans, totally out of it. When we got to the hospital, the Dr treated his wounds and I asked him if he would commit him because he was a danger to himself and others. They didn't, they let him go and he was picked up by police and fought 4 cops in his daze ( thought they were Germans).  He ended up doing time for assaulting police when it all could have been avoided if the Dr would have helped him. I know this has nothing to do with EMTs , I know quite a few and all of them are great professionals, just speaking to the care, or lack of, that emergency room doctors give to patients. They kicked him right out of the hospital and got into it with the police, that is the only thing that I think this woman could be saying but there is definitely no way any EMT turned the ambulance around.

I'm an EMT as well and we don't ever turn around and take a pt back.

Welcome to excited delirium. Taser shocks don't and can't kill. The LAPD didn't kill him, he died on his own. Idiots are the ones who think tasers kill.

tasers have killed over 500 people.  You must work for the company or something.  no logical person would say tasers do not kill people because they have in the past nd will continue to do so if we do not change how they are used.

Mrwtf
Mrwtf

Oh look. Someone who doesn't know WTF they are talking about.. How quaint. humm.. Man not in CA gets tasered (electricity is what regulates our heartbeats BTW) disrupts his cardiac timing induces an arrhythmia. Yeah.. Pretty clear that they induced his arrest thru excessive use of tasers.

Rmeno
Rmeno

Jeremy e are you kidding? Welcome to the world of idiots and the way they think... Tasers can and DO kill. Excited Delirium is not even recognized by the medical profession nor is it listed in the CDC's journal of disease and conditions.  There fore it's NOT REAL... it's just someone's made up theory on what happens to people who die when police use force... bottom line is the TASER and the LAPD killed this guy.  Tasers are known to cause Cardiac dysrhythmia/arrhythmia which causes heart attacks/cardiac arrest.  This man would still be alive if the police used another method of restraint.

Mace has also been involved in deaths, just like a pucnh to a nose could cause death. Tasers have proven they are a safer method for the suspect and the police. The guy was freaking out and at his size, he could have really gone off on someone. I hate the guy died but at least his girlfriend, emt or the cops were not injured...

@ Me2, My view differs greatly from yours, Do you think he'd have gone into cardiac arrest without the tasers?  I wonder if the LAPD is schooled on handling/recognising the delirious, anxiety fueled, or psychotic individual ??  6 tasers ??    Six     SIX  ??

Turbina325

6 x sounds like this guy is on something serious if he took 6 tasers broke a handcuff. Sounds like he is on pcp and with a roided body liked that combined with bad drugs he is no angel. Very fishy story indeed.

Idiot. Excited dilerium? The only other was to shoot him. He broke a handcuff, pulled a stretcher off the floor that is locked in place. Sounds like he got what he deserved.

Halidol isn't a benzo it's anti-psychotic medication.

He got what he deserved?  He committed NO CRIME!!! The LAPD even admit that he was not under arrest.  How did he deserve to die for NOT committing a crime?

Valkyre Ww
Valkyre Ww

Bennzo, sure...But you have to have knowlege of the cause of the excited delerium or at least a pretty good idea what IS NOT the cause before you just go tossing Haldol at him, unless of course inducing seziures or producing prolonged QT syndrom so sever it causes a leathal arrthymia is ok with you. Cook book medics kill also... think it through.

sketter
sketter

First off there is something off with the story being told. They should have used a a chemical sedative like Halidol or some other benzo to take him down. Yes, the LAPD acted poorly and yes the EMTs acted poorly in dropping off the patient back at home. Excited delirium is often overlooked and a inexperienced or under educated EMT may not recognize the signs and symptoms to this disease that if not treated correctly always ends in respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. It's just too bad this isn't the first time The LAPD has had publicity for this kind of thing.

Pat
Pat

Oh, really?  The guy chose to give himself cardiac arrest?  I doubt that very much.  It could very likely be that tasers can be fatal to some people if the circumstances are right.  Just because this man was a burly porn star doesn't mean he wasn't vulnerable on some physical level.
