Baby Mountain Lion Killed by Santa Monica Cops After Wandering Into 2nd Street Courtyard

The chaotic chase shut down 2nd between Wilshire and Arizona.
Updated at the bottom with a photo of the poor thing before it died. But it was no "baby," says the Santa Monica Police Department.

News helicopters swarmed above a glass business courtyard on Santa Monica's swanky 2nd Street all morning -- visible from rush hour on the PCH -- as Santa Monica police worked with Department of Fish and Game officials to round up an 80-pound baby mountain lion.

But after a tranquilizer dart, a round of "pepper balls" and multiple blasts from a Fire Department hose, the wild animal was still in danger of escaping the courtyard...

... Santa Monica Police Sergeant Robert Almada tells Patch. So "the officers had to euthanize the animal."

We've contacted Almada to confirm whether Fish and Game agents or local cops were the ones to fire the fatal bullets. [Update: KTLA reporter Eric Spillman Tweets that "a Santa Monica Police officer actually fired the shots that killed the #mountainlion."]

A janitor at the property (in the 1200 block of 2nd Street; see above) reportedly came across the mountain lion in the early morning hours, and immediately called 911. According to City News Service, cops surrounded the building until Fish and Game could take over.

The whole pursuit lasted about three hours.

From NBC4:

The male mountain lion -- estimated to weigh 80 pounds -- apparently jumped over an eight-foot fence to enter the courtyard area.

Police have been telling reporters throughout the morning that they've seen other species come down from the Santa Monica Mountains -- raccoons, deer, etc. -- but never a mountain lion.

Update No. 1: About one month ago, Fish and Game killed another 80-pound mountain lion in Sunland, after a resident spotted it lurking near her garage. That caused some controversy among animal advocates, who said that the mountain lion wasn't trying to hurt anybody and should have just been tranquilized.

But department spokesman Andrew Hughan told the Weekly after that shooting: "Putting a tranquilizing dart is not like the movies. It takes 10 minutes or more for darts to take effect. ... If you dart that lion and it runs out onto the 210 at 4 p.m. on a Friday afternoon, you can imagine the carnage."

Update No. 2: KTLA's Eric Spillman just Tweeted an aerial photo of the young mountain lion before it died. This is apparently the courtyard in which it was trapped.

"photo of a mountain lion shot and killed in santa monica."

Update No. 3: Sergeant Almada tells us that Fish and Game agents were the ones to "employ the tranquilizer dart."

But when that proved "ineffective," he says the Santa Monica PD shot the mountain lion with pepper balls and the L.A. County Fire Department sprayed it with their high-pressure hoses.

At that point, Santa Monica police decided that the animal was still a threat, and "regretably," says Almada, "we had to use lethal force."

But he disputes the word "baby" in our headline. The cat was a "full-grown 3-year-old male," says the sergeant.

Daniel Sforz is quoted an interview with the Santa Monica Patch that Fish and Game did their best. Totally disagree. They weren't prepared for this inevitable situation. This city is bordered by mountains. This needed to be a protocol and he, as a captain, didn't  have it in place. Beyond bad: NOT to have this contingency, given where Santa Monica is located. I've watched over the years how this city has set the precedent for the country in a number of "earth friendly" and forward-thinking ways: the Big Blue Bus, water reclamation, the bag tax, SM City College, and KCRW's amazing community building efforts, etc. This situation shows that Fish and Game and the SMPD are not up to this standard where stewardship and wildlife is concerned. There need to be serious questions asked in high places: WHY NOT? It costs a fortune to live in this city and state, given the economic climate and our taxes need to be paying the salaries of people who are as sharp, forward thinking and pro-active as possible. There are many competent candidates out there, I'm sure, who could've have handled this differently.

What a complete bunch of morons!!!!!! Are you people able to logically apply common sense and think  for yourselfs. Or is it just the fact you have never been exposed to any actual wildlife outside of a zoo or a golf course. First the newspaper should be ashamed of themselves. I know they need to sell papers but where is their intergrity. Either they did not bother to check any facts or went with an outright lie. A baby mountain lion does not weigh 80 pounds and jump 8 foot fences. To be 80 lbs the young male was probably 2 to 3 years old. He was not a milk drinking baby, but a grown cat living on his own. These large cats kill approximately 1 deer a week and last time I checked I dont weigh  anymore than the the average deer. Have any of you ever seen how they get that dinner? I can guarantee the lions death was much more humane than his prey. Lets face it people we live on this earth and people are not going away. We need to manage wildlife in the best manner possible if we want to continue to enjoy it. Let the professionals do their jobs, protect environment, gather facts and make decisions based on cold hard facts not emotion. Have any of you tried to catch a cornered tame housecat that weighs five pounds. Now imagine an 80 lbs wild killing machine cornered in a strange enviorment and say shame on you cops for killing that cute animal. How dare you protect your self and the public. You signed up for that job too die for us. Forget your wife and kids that lion is more important to me than a person. I know for a fact that little 80 LB baby would never have hurt anyone. I know you didn't even try a tranquilizer because it would have went to sleep because I AM AN EXPET but i guess i really didn't know that you need to match the dose to the weight of the animal and hope he will calmly sight still in an enclosed strange space with people and helicopters flying around and let you shoot him. I hope the shot is perfect and the full dose is adminstered because if only some takes effect he wont fall asleep and might need another shot. Of course to much from a second shot will probably kill him. Plus if his adrenaline if up that will counter the effects of the drug giving him more time to play nice with those trigger happy morons who have familys to go home to.The lion only cleared an 8 foot fence and can jump over 20 feet in one bound. In the confined space of a court yard he can be on and kill a person in seconds. But then it only takes 1 second for the tranquilizer to take effect right. These animals are beautiful wild majestic animals but remember they are also large wild carnivores. They don't belong around residential  or commercial areas. Thank you to all the people who risked their live so we can sit here safely on our anonymous computers and critize your decisions.

Santa Monica is Martian Klan and the same Klan Killers who blew the Cougar away probably hacked upOJ's wife and Mark Goldman. Brentwood is a few blocks away from the 3rd Street Promenade and I wasa prisoner of Martian Klan SAMO for about a year and a half. In fact, I believe I was blown away by theMartian Klan cops for also trying to find food in the dumpsters behind the Promenade. Too bad the Cougardidn't contact me I would have gave him the bag of day old pizzas! The Martian Klan cops can put any humanor animal into a trance in a nano-second__and they do! There is no need for any weapons or tranquilizers. The Martian Klan in SAMO, Venice, LA are pure evil. Ask Reese Witherspoon, she was run over in Santa Monica while jogging. The driver said she thought Reese was a Cougar and was told to run her over.Look me up on Google and U2B! True stories about the Martian Klan! Shot a pet Cougar?  Please, they should have driven a few blocks up Wilshire to Wholefoods and got some Ground Beef and drugged the pet Cougar. SAMO isdead! They are all Martian Klan! They don't know any better!

Also, it was the West Hollywood Police that thought the Metro Driver was a wild Catand shot it or him to death before he could flee the area. Wake up and smell the Martian Klan in LA! We human people are being wiped out!

Nope

If it put your child In danger you would think differently. Put yourself in the cops place. They are here to protect us. It is a sad situation and I'm sure the cop feels bad. He may have protected one of our friends or family. It really isn't that easy. But to point fingers is. It's a sad situation.

the ineptitude of the police is clearly evident with the shoddy attempt at rescuing this poor animal....seems people are not safe from this type of moronic behaviour as well...

Why didn't they use more tranquilizor darts?  Killing was not necessary.  No compassion here and the lion was probablky more scared than harmful.

I don't think that they used tranquilizer darts, common that can't be true, otherwise it wouldhave sleep.

And pepper balls or spray or whatever .. . it was just lying there, so they provoked it to move around sothey could say. . . Everyone was in danger, then BANG! No respect for the one in charge who authorized use of deadly force. How can they do this? Must be some rule that states when and when they can't use deadly force on an animal. Seems like they had everyone out and the exits were all blocked all. A beautiful cat like that, just resting and they murder it. so pitiful. Stupid is as stupid does.

Yeah that baby lion looks real dangerous.  Trapped in a yard and all of 1 year old, it is scared stiff.  Deadly force was not needed.  Trigger-happy morons.
