Magic Johnson Lied to Dodger Fans About Frank McCourt's Role In Parking Lots

Bosom buddies: Magic Johnson and Frank McCourt
Updated below: Dodgers will lose millions on the parking deal, after they pay McCourt.

Magic Johnson stood up on a podium at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday and flat-out lied to Dodger fans.

Johnson, the front man for the team's new ownership group, said that ex-owner Frank McCourt was "not involved in any shape or fashion" with the team. He also said McCourt would not get any of the parking revenues.

"He doesn't get a dime from the parking," Johnson said.

False. In fact, as the Times' Bill Shaikin reported Friday night, the Dodgers will pay $14 million a year to a company half-owned by McCourt for the privilege of parking cars at the stadium.

Magic Johnson simply lied about that, as he continues to obfuscate about his partnership with the most hated man in Los Angeles.

Asked on Saturday to explain Johnson's comment, in light of the $14 million parking lot lease, Dodger spokesman Joe Jareck said, "It's got nothing to do with parking. It's a lease deal for the land."

You got that? The Dodgers are leasing the parking lots from Frank McCourt, in order to park cars there, but it's got nothing to do with parking. That's what you have to believe in order to claim that Johnson was telling the truth.

This wasn't some stray remark on Johnson's part. The new owners have been lying about this issue continuously since their $2.15 billion bid was accepted in March. On March 29, three anonymous sources told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne that the new owners "will not allow McCourt to reap any profits from parking revenue." Based on that, she wrote a story headlined "McCourt gets no parking lot money."

When confronted by Shaikin with the fact that the Dodgers are in fact paying McCourt for the use of his land, Mark Walter, the controlling owner, acknowledged on Friday that "McCourt would get some portion of the annual $14 million lease payments."

But that's not what he said on Wednesday, when he was asked the same question. At the press conference, he acknowledged that McCourt had an interest in future real estate development, but as for "Current operations -- parking -- not related to it."

He could have leveled with fans then, but decided instead that Dodger fans don't deserve the truth. Way to kick off your ownership.

Now, with numbers like $2.15 billion floating around, it's easy to forget that $14 million is a very high amount for the Dodgers to pay to rent their own parking lots. (Ask yourself: Who else is going to rent them?) Frank McCourt set the price back in 2005, when he was on both sides of the transaction. When Shaikin first reported on the rent payments in 2010, sports economist Andrew Zimbalist called the figure "way out of line" with what other teams pay.

"There's nothing anywhere that's anything like that in professional sports," Zimbalist told Shaikin in 2010. "I don't know of any team that pays anything like that to use its facility."

So now the Dodgers are stuck with a very high rent payment for the next 99 years. That's money that could go into scouts and player salaries. Instead it will line Frank McCourt's pockets, forever.

Asked to defend this arrangement, Jareck said, "It's all part of a very complicated deal. I think our fans will see very quickly that this ownership group will spend what it takes to win and any lease money will not have economic impact on the franchise."

He may be right. Maybe the new owners have done such a good job of lying and obfuscating about this supposedly "complicated deal," that fans won't care. And maybe if they put a winning team on the field, no one will mind that Frank McCourt is siphoning millions of dollars from the franchise every year.

But some fans probably care a lot. For those fans, there's a simple solution: Boycott the lots. Take public transportation. Get to Union Station -- by bus, by Gold Line, Red Line, Blue Line, Expo Line, Amtrak, Metrolink, or by car. Get on the Dodger Stadium Express.

As author David Kipen put it in the L.A. Times: boycotting the lots would "put the new owners on notice that Dodgers fans are not to be trifled with."

And don't be lured by the reduced price. That just shows they're scared.

Update: So how much revenue do the Dodgers get from parking every year? Thanks to the McCourt divorce, we don't have to speculate. We have the data. In 2006, the last year in which parking cost $10, the Dodgers brought in $9.2 million in parking revenue. (The figure comes from a financial summary included in McCourt's ill-fated pitch to Chinese investors for a global sports franchise.)

In 2006, the Dodgers were second in the majors in attendance, with 46,401 fans per game. So far this year, the Dodgers are sixth in attendance, with 39,591 fans per game. So it'll take quite a bit of work just to get back up to $9.2 million. But let's just go with that to be sporting.

Now, if Frank McCourt charges the Dodgers $14 million per year for the parking lot lease, let's see... carry the one... that leaves the Dodgers $5 million in the red on the parking deal. (And that's not counting the cost of parking attendants.)

That $5 million is more than Juan Rivera makes, more than Aaron Harang makes, and about 10 times more than Javy Guerra makes.

It is not the parking lot that makes the team.  It is the people within the stadium.  The team, the front office, and the fans.  The business atmosphere was already FUBAR.  Mccourt had to get out of there.  I just don't want to see greedy him nor his bitch wife at the stadium.   From where I live.......metro sounds great.  And as a Dodger fan, I have no problem doing it.  Though if I did, that is at least 5 dollars of parking fees that could have gone and helped the team.  So now the Dodgers would even lose more.  Not something I can do.  McCourt is a greedy man.

I was hoping that he would have been vanished completely.  But let me ask you.....Who here has cleared up a case of Herpes?

Buddy you're such a naive peasant fool.  They probably had to make a deal with the devil to secure the bid.  The other two bidders balked to give Mccourt any deal, so Magics team decided to give Mccourt a stake to gain preference, that's the real world child.  Go back to fantasy baseball if you can't deal with the hardball real world of business.  Mccourt does not get any parking fees idiot he gets HALF, do you understand, HALF of 14 million per year lease as half owner of entity that owns parking lots, that's 7 million.  You're math at the end of your article is so off it just shows how naive and dim-witted you are, now apologize to Magic and don't embarrass yourself with ignorant articles anymore, stop while you still have any dignity left.

It's called business. It isn't pretty. If you want to hate anybody who makes any deal or compromises in order to get the best REALISTIC result, then please don't eat up our time doing it. Why don't you and Jon Weisman have a "Who's more unjustly angry" competition?

The Q
The Q

Rolls eyes and others, if true dodger fans would have relied on your coolective bury your heads in the sand indolence and indifference to the Mcahole looting of the dodgers,  MLB wouldn't have taken over the franchise and new ownership wouldn't have occurred.

There were many "best realistic results" possible, and some fans believe this was not one of them.

So, why don't you, "Chris" and "the dick:" have a "who's more of a douchebag dodger fan?" competition?

Get a Life Gene!

Stop

You said it your self with your closing statements. McCourt is not getting ANY profit, like magic said.

First, there ARE NO profits. 2nd, the Dodgers are paying a lease. They are not paying a per parking ticket sale profit

So stop crying and let the season play out and the fans actually make up their own mind about the Dodgers and it's owners

What Magic said was "he doesn't get a dime from the parking." In fact, he gets all the dimes from the parking, and then some. Stan Kasten has now told the Times' editors that he "regrets" leaving a false impression about that (i.e. lying).

The Greater Echo Park Elysian Neighborhood Council, the neighborhood council where Dodger Stadium resides, will be voting later this month on a motion asking Frank McCourt to set aside  one percent of the Dodger sale price ( $ 20 million dollars) for the establishment of a neighborhood trust fund to assist neighborhoods around Dodger Stadium.

The funds would be used to support local youth employment and after school programs, neighborhood beautification projects, protection and expansion of Elysian Park, anti-bullying education for fans, anti-drinking in public education campaign, beefed up patrols around the neighborhood by local security company and other ideas that a community based committee could consider.

The request is for McCourt to give back 1% for the 99%.  If you think this is a good idea, please send me a note of support at jose_sigala@yahoo.com

hahahahhah ! good luck ! you think Frank Mc Court gives a rats ass about Echo Park  and the surrounding areas ? never has , never will. This is Coming from someone who has lived in Echo Park for 44 years.

Johnson & co. should have stated from the beginning that though they would have preferred to cut out McCourt completely, he would have none of it. That the only way for Guggenheim to be the winning bidder was to allow McCourt to still have a minor connection.

When i go to the games i don't park in the parking anyways(at least the last ten years). Rather park on the hill or down at the park and walk and save my $15.00 to get three more Dodger Dogs for my kids!

We all knew mccourt owned the lots. What is Magic and his group supposed to do, not buy the dodgers because mccourt owns the parking land? When i read boxscores, watch games, live through playoff series'....the last goddamn thing on my mind is whos taking the parking lot $$$. Move on idiots...we just got rid of the worst owner in sports history, we're in 1st place...AND WE'RE TALKING BOUT PARKING! PARKING??! (my tribute to Iverson)

What needs to be understood here is that McCourt will not receive anything from the $10 I will pay tonight. Rent money is rent money. Do you mean to tell me that when I buy a hamburger at McDonald's that I am giving my money to some snobby, rich guy who probably laughs at me because I am apart of the filth that is this Earth? No!

You can't think that way. If that were the case, nobody would support anybody.

Gene

Suppose you wanted to boycott grapes because the growers treated their workers poorly. But you still bought grapes from the grocery store, because the grocery store didn't do anything wrong. What kind of a boycott would that be? Not a terribly effective one, for sure.

Gold_Star
Gold_Star

Gene, your analogy falls apart because, under the Magic/McCourt agreement, the "store" still has to pay the"grower" no matter if I boycott grapes until doomsday.

Rob
Rob

The problem is that the expected driver revenue is what made the price of that lease possible. In effect, when you pay the parking fee, you're subsidizing McCourt because you are helping him keep value in the leased property. So McCourt is indeed laughing at those who thought that we were getting rid of him.

Gold_Star
Gold_Star

I'll pass on the boycott invite, thanks.

Gene, you're entitled to your outrage - but you aren't entitled to mine.

Gene
Gene

I think you have more power than you think. Last year, fans boycotted the games. Magic & Co. have paid so much money that they can't afford for that to continue. And that's why they're lying. If pushed to the wall, the new owners could kick in another $150 million to buy out McCourt's ownership of the lots.

Mc Court is NOT OUT ! they just want you to believe that . ITS ALL BUSINESS! They put a friendly loveable face like MAgic Johnson to make you believe all is well but huge development is brewing in the undercurrent .Magic Johnson is just a pawn . If you believe that Mc Court is out  , you are a naive  fool . He never cared about the Dodgers or the surrounding neighborhoods.

Ron34
Ron34

the improtant part is that McCourt is out. If you understand business at all you would know that there are some things you have to give up in order to complete a deal. So what that Frank McCourt gets money from renting the parking lot. He set that up years ago to keep MLB from controlling it. It's time to move on. The Dodgers have new owners who are committed to winning let's support them.

Gene
Gene

Magic Johnson could have said, "Look, this is business. In order to get this deal done, we had to give McCourt $14 million a year for the parking lots." That would have at least been somewhat honest. Instead he lied, presumably because he believed lying would be less damaging than telling the truth. It's my job to point out that he's lying. Readers are free to make of that what they will.

Michael Bryson
Michael Bryson

"He doesn't get a dime from the parking." Hey Magic, way to lie by telling the (narrowly defined and partial) truth.

Yeah, he doesn't get a dime from the parking, because he gets 14 million in rent for a parking lot that will only bring in 9 million in revenue.

This is how the rich take care of each other, making sure they all stay rich. And the rest of us?

Face down. Backside up.

Zippy Frack
Zippy Frack

Finally some truth comes out.  Great article.

Arestop
Arestop

Lets quit the whining about this deal and be glad McCourt's out.  And Magic is technically telling the truth, although not the whole truth.  The parking fees we pay go to the Dodgers not McCourt.  As one of its operating expenses, the Dodgers lease the land for the lots from Mc Court's company.  Anything left over is profit for the Dodgers.

Gene
Gene

Let's use a different example. Suppose I said that a movie studio "doesn't get a dime" for its movies, because it's actually the theater that sells the tickets. That's obviously ridiculous. Moviegoers pay for the studio's product through an intermediary. Just the same, when fans pay $10 to park on Frank McCourt's land, they are paying him for that privilege, through an intermediary. To say that he "doesn't get a dime from the parking" is not just shading the truth. It's a lie.

Stop complaining, mcourts gone and no longer making baseball decisions that's what matters.

The Q
The Q

You are half right - Mcfart is not making baseball decisions, but he is not gone.

I think the reason they cut in McCourt on the land surrounding the stadium is simple: avoidance of Prop. 13 re-assessment when title changes hands.

Gene, why don't you interview a real estate CPA and ask him to do the numbers for you.

If they buy from Mcdirt the land outright, it will get re-assessed and since the purchasing price for other assets were hundreds of millions, you can bet that the land around the stadium would be worth many times what Mccourt paid for it in 2004.

The big crime here is how homeowners get re-assessed when they buy a property but corporations can use "loopholes" and technically not transfer title by setting up dummy partnerships or stock companies.

Perhaps I am off base on this, but I doubt it.

I think this wound be a good follow up story Gene, the new owners love of money outweighing the toxic partnership with the most hated man in LA (who hasn't killed anybody)

Gene
Gene

You're not off-base. The lots are currently appraised at $78 million. Let's assume they'd be worth $300 million if they were reappraised now (since Guggenheim paid $150 million for a 50% stake). But since only 50% of the lots are changing hands, they will not be reappraised, which means that McCourt/Guggenheim will save roughly... $2.4 million a year in property taxes. Hope that answers the question.

The Q
The Q

Thank you for the follow up!

Riversidian

It really doesn't matter in any way shape or form. Dodgers' fans are too busy caring not one dick-worth about how much money is spent on anything so long as they go over .500 this year and make the playoffs. This kind of shit has been going on forever in the behind-the-scenes sports world - and by Magic lying - doesn't change a thing. The only difference here is the fact that more money has been spent buying a franchise in this deal than any other deal in history, so the lying and lining of McCourt's pockets will be dust in the wind within days and everyone will go back to the ooohs and ahhhs of the crack of the bat...
