Updated at the bottom with some strange details about the last time he was seen. First posted at 7:05 a.m. Monday.

Gavin Smith, a longtime Fox movie distribution exec, has been missing for nearly a week.

His son, USC basketball forward Evan Smith, has taken to Twitter to publicize the plight of his 57-year-old father, who played on UCLA's 1975 championship team under John Wooden.

Dad was reported missing Tuesday:

Smith was last seen at a friend's house Ventura County's Oak Park area between 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. on May 1, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

City News Service says he was actually seen driving away from the home in the 500 block of Callwood Court.

Smith was driving a black, 2000 four-door Mercedes E Class (a 420 badged as a 500), deputies say. It has tinted windows, soft racks on the roof and California plate number 6EKT044. It's also missing.

Someone at 20th Century Fox distribution called authorities, according to a sheriff's statement.

The ex-baller is 6 feet, 6 inches tall, 210 pounds, with green eyes and gray hair and blond highlights. Sheriff's officials say he has a four-inch scar on the inside of his right wrist and a five-incher on one of his calves.

Even Smith tweeted:

The elder Smith, who has family and business connections in Calabasas and West Hills, worked at Fox for 18 years, according to reports: In fact, before he had gone missing, he had just returned from a movie business convention in Las Vegas.

If you've seen Gavin Smith, call detectives at 323-890-5500.

[Update at 1:03 p.m.]: ABC News is reporting that Smith intended to spend the night at the friend's house and left under strange circumstances, wearing sweat pants that he intended to sleep in and leaving a cellphone charger and shave kit behind.

He was wearing purple workout pants belonging to a teen son.

Evan Smith said:

That's what he was wearing, you know? It doesn't sound like he was going anywhere, you know?

What's significant here is what DOESN'T appear in the story.C'mon, LA Times.....do your job.Or is this just an advanced form of milk-carton ad for a missing person?

"dad decided to leave the family" according to a Twitter message sent mid-April and referenced in other news articles about G.Smith disappearance.

When one member of family does not agree to follow "guru" who has asserted control over the others - then his passive refusal to go along may be worded as an active "decision to leave".

My guess is he left the house to go to a Fast Food place to get something to eat.....he wouldn't have to get out of the car at a fast food place...as he was wearing purple pants, would not care what he looked like......so I am thinking he got car jacked.  Another thought would be he could have driven off a cliff and is on the roadside.

Are the canyons being checked?  Is it possible that he could of had a accident and gone down in one of the canyons?  The car could be under a big bush.

My heartfelt prayers go out to his family in hopes of his safe return home!

Gavin has done so much for Variety of Southern California (a charity for disadvantaged children).  Everyone respects this man.  We all pray for his safe return.

Are you sure it isn't Kellwood Ct?  No Callwood Ct shows up in Oak Park, CA.

Sounds like his son is a nice guy too. Comments on Fox and CBS articles prompted me to search his (impressively pretty) girlfriend on Facebook, where she described Evan as "seeing the good in everyone and everything." let's get Gavin back to the family that deserves him

I really pray he is found soon, safe and sound.  Gavin was a Senior at Van Nuys High School my first year there.  I really looked up to him, being the star on the basketball team.  He was always a nice guy too.  I remember watching him with pride when he would play at UCLA.
