i am a father of a 31 year old young man. this was so hard to watch but i watched to serve witness to how much change we need in our country and especially in Fullerton. horrific, bestial are two words to descrive what transpired.

I have never seen a more horrifiying video in my life. It takes 6 cops to hold down one skinny, unarmed man? Kelly Thomas looked like he couldn't even hold off one cop! This is unacceptable behavior for any policeman with regards to the homeless and the mentally ill transients. The homeless might not be likeable, but they do not deserve to be treated like Kelly Thomas was, and they don't deserve to die either. Maybe it's time to bring back state-run psychiatric hospitals, only without the abuse and corruption that caused them to be closed years ago. I sincerely hope the two officers are punished for this horrible crime of theirs, and yes, it is a crime because the coroner has ruled it to be a homicide.

This is completely heart wrenching. I never knew his name, but I remember his face. I've seen him a few times on the streets in my hometown of Placentia. I especially remember making an awkward eye contact with him in a Rite Aid store. I felt terrible for him then, but beyond measure even more so now... He had honest eyes. Being a law an order guy I usually side with the police.This case,however, is a disgrace to law enforcement everywhere. There is no way this thing should've turned into a murder. Manny Ramos you should be used to dealing with these situations on a routine basis yet you fail hugely. I only hope this once great department can recover from this debacle. Ultimately one has to wonder about the attitude not only of officers to the mentally challenged and those deemed to be living on the socially peripheral but to what extent they have crossed the line in their duty and in essence have become the criminals that they have supposed themselves to be protecting society in the first place against. They were not sitting on him the first time there were only 2 cops at the scene. More cops came and reacted when the situation escalated. I am so tired of this shit we see now. Just tell me what you would have done differently - if you are faced with a suspect that is obviously not complying so need force to remove - how do you magically do that and not make it appear to be a tussle? My entire point is if I were to be in Kelly's position - I would not have an incident escalate into a 32 min beating because in the first 30 seconds i would have obeyed the officer's instructions and be arrested without incident. This is tragic all around. Unfortunately if he rolled over and complied, the whole situation would not have escalated. This is usually the case with any situation were the suspect is not obeying the instructions of the police officer. This was the case of Rodney King and this is the case here. Of course any situation where people resist arrest - it is going to seem like a violent swarm. Unless the cop just shoots the person - what do you expect a street tussle to look like?

The officers should be trained to recognize a mentally ill person, he was incapable of understanding various commands, I should know I'm in medical field and know officers are confronted with mental ill homeless people many times. That death was blatant excessive force to inflect injury or pain as the officer mentioned in the video.

If only Ron Thomas had had such an interest in his son's well being and safety in life as he has in death. Of coure any father would naturally be tramautized by such a violent death of his son; however those who were/are obligated to protect and to serve humanity, both as parental guardians and those sworn to uphold & respect everone's equal protection under the law, have failed Kelly Thomas in ways that cast the bigger picture of our society in a very dark light. I agree with you! Based on him being an adult, his fatherand other family members must go through a process. Just because he has adisorder, doesn’t mean a judge would implement any rulings in the victimsfathers favor. They do not grant power-of-attorney simply because someone is schizophrenic,not to mention, there are multiple forms of Schizophrenia so those diagnosed(one of my aunts included) can cohabitate and take perfectly good care ofthemselves. The issue is; some cannot afford the medication. Some of them alsostruggle with the effects of the medication or believe they function better without.It depends on the person. When my aunt wanted to leave, as long as she was ofsound mind; no one could prevent her from leaving. She is an adult and I feelthe same way about his family. I can want something but it does not mean theperson is going to be willing to appease me.
