Marijuana Legalization Wouldn't Pass if California Voted On it Today

After Prop. 19, the effort to fully legalize marijuana in California, came ever so close to passing in 2010, some polls had cannabis slowly gaining approval months later, whetting the appetites for some supporters who wanted a remix of the initiative on the 2012 ballot.

Well, 2012 is here, and there's no full-legalization measure to speak of. Not only that, but Californians don't seem to be much closer to weed-smoking utopia than they were two years ago.

The latest numbers from the USC Dornsife / Los Angeles Times poll (PDF) show that ...

... the same percentage of California voters support full legalization as the percentage who voted for Prop. 19 -- 46 percent.

The poll found that 50 percent of you would vote no today; 54 percent were opposed in 2010.

But ... a whopping 80 percent of you back what the Golden State does now --- "allowing patients with terminal or debilitating conditions to possess and consume marijuana if their doctors recommend it."

Dan Schnur, director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at USC, told the Times that Californians want compassionate cannabis but are "worried that the law is being abused."

With 500 or so pot shops in L.A., some might call it abuse. For others, it's a convenience.

Our republic isn't supposed to let the tyranny of the majority stomp on the rights of the minority.

I suggest bringing the economy down by not buying anything absolutely necessary until marijuana is legalized.

Not that one should expect intelligent analysis (or intelligence or analysis) from Dennis Romero, but there are more than a few problems with the poll.

The first is that it isn't anonymous - take a look at the questionnaire. The person is asked to confirm they are the person listed in voter registry at that address.

People will hedge their answers on controversial subjects if the poll is not anonymous. The same poll can be given to the same subjects - if they are asked to identify themselves, they will respond more "cautiously" or "conservatively" when responding to questions about controversial subjects. There's no need to dispute the message itself - after all, the vote was very close in 2010. In fact, these numbers suggest little more than the lack of "marijuana positive" information/education since the 2010 election. After all, polls then showed almost the same numbers. There is nothing remarkable about this poll or its results. Not that you can expect Romero to point this out. It fits his narrative better if there suddenly seems to be less support for legalization than in 2010. (Ditto the medical support numbers, which are increasing slowly as the public is educated on the reality of medical cannabis.)It's clear that if the DEA and various anti-marijuana media outlets are the loudest voices in the marijuana debate. It follows that in the absence of an alternate message of similar volume or intensity the public is not likely to alter its previous expressed opinions. The DEA threatens to practically invade California; zealous DAs demonstrate they will use private records to prosecute sick people; police kick down doors; people get fired from their jobs for expressing an opinion. It's not a stretch to wonder if some portion half the 1000 people polled decided not to associate their name with something that could get them fired from their job, especially since the media and government have told them over and over and over and over what a horrible world will result from legalization - for example, the lie that legal marijuana will provide more revenue for Mexican drug cartels, or that medical marijuana is being sold by gangs, or that gangs are taking over shops.... all lies.... all provided by the government and reported without any question by Dennis Romero and others.

And absent from the media blitz? Accurate information about marijuana. Romero has in the past responded that the advocates provide that information and that it is not his responsibility to do so. MANY TIMES he has made this excuse, in print and in person. It is not his responsibility to report facts, accurate data, or anything which would tend to mitigate the one-sided view he wishes to promote. That's the only real news story here. The government and some members of media dominate the discussion. They tend to ridicule marijuana users and/or discredit medical users by suggesting (with zero reliable data) that a significant portion or majority of medical use is "fraudulent." The government releases false data and the media reports it; the data is later debunked and the media fails to report it. These opponents of marijuana access further suggest - again with no evidence - that the tiny minority of people who do not support medical cannabis take such a position because they fear the system is abused. They contend that outright bans on easy access to legally approved substances are the only solution to an unproven crisis that barely 20% of the public may recognize.

The reason why California doesnt favor legalization of Marijuana is simple. Most of the illegal pot dealing has been going on from California for decades, well before the whole medical initiative. Legalization would cost hundreds of thousands of mediocre pot growers their very livelihood.  These people have families and those families comprise about 50% of the voting public in Cali.

A very good point - in 2010 there were some prominent producers of medical marijuana who opposed legalization. I was personally astounded to find about 30% of the patients I know agreed! Patients are concerned that the quality will be affected; legalization also does not automatically mean less expensive product. Then there are the insurance companies....

If Dennis Romero cared about actual journalism, there's a pretty amazing story to be written about all this. Unfortunately he has chosen to place himself in a middle position between advocacy for government positions and ridicule of marijuana users. Rather the opposite of "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable." But Dennis knows upon which side of the bread his butter is spread.

So, are we supposed to believe that 56% of the US, in General. favors legalization but only 46% of Californians favor it?

its true because Californians grow it more than any other people, and they make money from the il-legalization of it.

The Weekly's "The Informer" Blog sure is pumping out the political propaganda these days...maybe it should be renamed "The Propagandist" !

Looks like 2 shady polls that Obama bought from USC in a songle day!...no wonder they have a Multi-Billion Dollar Endowment invested in Real Estate and Stocks, that they won't share with their students and graduates who are wallowing in debt.

Obama and USC...Both Bought and Paid For By MegaCorporations.  Don't believe the hype...Obama is DEFINITELY NOT a Socialist or Communist...if he was, the poor and middle class would not be suffering so much in this Obama Recession with Overpriced Gasoline, NO jobs, Ridiculously Overpriced Healthcare/Medicines, and Banks that Obama saved with our Tax Money that refuse to extend credit to anybody !!!

Obama = Corporatist (arguably a Hyper-Capatalist to his Billionaire Buddies that he rescued and whose deals he approves and to the Investment Bank/Hedge Fund Executives that kept their jobs instead of going to jail and who keep getting those raises and bonuses.

DR = Propaganda Tool for Obama and his Justice Dept pick Eric "Mexico Guns Adventure/Scandal" Holder.

DR: You're so transparently blatant.  Obama won't be able to give you a PR job when he loses !  You should try sucking-up to Mitt, instead !
