Santa Monica Parking Meters Steal Time, Rollback to Zero After Every Car

The parking nazis have come to Santa Monica: No free minutes for you!

New sensors that begin working today will cut meters' paid time down to zero once a space is empty, even if the woman who parked in a spot before you paid for way more time than she used.

Yep. According to a city of Santa Monica statement:

The meters, with sensors, also require all customers to pay for all of the time they park at the space by resetting the meter when a vehicle vacates the spot, encouraging the parking space to turn over. This is similar to long-standing operations of the City's off-street parking facilities.

Smart.

Not only that, but the new sensors will allow the meters to know when a car has overstayed its limit: No feeding the meter.

We're guessing here that you could cheat by pulling out of a space and pulling back in, but that remains to be seen: If you're caught it's a $64 ticket.

The 6,000 solar-powered meters with sensors will be installed in the downtown area in the coming year, according to Santa Monica officials:

The new meters even allow you to pay by phone and receive text messages alerting you that your time's almost up.

It would be cool if they could apply that technology to life itself.

Come hell or high water. Also BTW, I told the police officer he should be pulling over drunk people and those disturbing the peace not a Mom trying to buy crafts as a service to the community. I told him where he could put the ticket: right back on his little note pad. And he did bc he didn't want to mess with me. That was the LAST time I went to DTSM. Goodbye DTSM. I will never see u again until I get a handicap placard to deal w the exorbitant cost of parking and the scarcity of it, and a hazmat suit to protect me while I wade through the homelessness. Homeless lurking in doorways, then you've git the cops lurking in the alleys. Its a smorgasbord of where u don't want to be. If u want to ride Ur bike to the beach and avoid DTSM altogether u will b much better off than trying to park and deal w the homeless dude's bags and strollers full of bags blocking the parking meter u r trying to stuff while he is harassing u for cash and u r trying to wrangle Ur kids away from the area where he is talking to himself.

Maybe this will mean  you will be able to find a parking space in Santa Monica..if only for a short time.  so, no movie...but an errand will be ok.

why's it have to be a woman?

The bigger question here is if someone got a kickback for pushing this cynical gimmick through.  Was someone awarded a fat contract to install sensors at street parking spaces?  Is that a justifiable expense, so that one can't occasionally pay a few minutes forward to the next motorist?  What's the rationale for this?  If someone pays for the time, than one car, and only one, can be in the spot at any given time, whether it's one car, two, or more that occupy the same span of time that was paid for.  In these times of financial stress, is this pathetic, petty shake-down the best solution that Santa Monica can come up with?

Santa Monica PE  is already notorious to me for seemingly being there the minute a meter expires. Its crazy. i think they have more parking enforcement per capita than any city in LA. Couple that with this new solar panel system and you really need to be vigilant. I like the text message system and pay by phone though - now if they'd only lower the cost. Its really expensive

Funny how we tax payers paid for these meters for city profit. Does anyone know where this money goes?

How is this legal? If you pay for 2 hours that's 2 hours of Leased space and the meters or signs have never specified you are paying only for your car. This is wrong.

Good. I live in SaMo, near Main St. and Urth Caffe, and there is way more traffic than the area can handle. This is a good measure, along w/more enforcement of non permit users of residential parking areas during the day.

Won't this cause more traffic if people have to move their cars and are not allowed to "feed the meter"?

I would say the traffic is due to not enough spaces.  More parking garages need to be built.

No matter what, the congestion in Santa Monica won't decrease as long as it continues to be a tourist spot (3rd St Promenade, the pier, the beach, restaurants, shopping, etc...)

So long as I can pay by a credit card I'll take the nazi meters over having to hunt for quarters  in the cracks of my car's interior.

Do they CREDIT your credit card when you don't use all your time?  That's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Good call. I think this will cause some major issues. A man sued Apple recently as iTunes double-billed him and refused to refund his money.

The question is what happens if you need more time?

Does this mean the technology is capable of charging us for the total amount of time we actually park (after we leave) rather than us having to guess beforehand?

Why am I paying all these taxes so they can be assholes and take even more of my money?

Exactly! Thank you.

Hopefully, they at least use this technology to create an app or website that helps you find empty parking spaces.

Wow. Santa monica politicians are really trying to suck all the money they can from the people.

This just sounds greedy to me. Another reason not to go to Santa Monica anymore. No big loss.

Your entire enjoyment of a city is based on parking?  What do you do, sit in your car the whole time?

I do not go near downtown Santa Monica. It is a mine field of rabid motorcycle cops lurking in allies waiting to lunge when u accidentally turn on a no left turn sign etc, and now this! Living in ca is expensive enough. That's it, I'm heading in to get my hands on a handicap placard come help or highwater. I can't take it anymore. Who wantsq to go to dirty downtown sm w all the motorcycle cops waiting to pounce on innocent moms like me who make a wrong turn yet freely ignore all the homeless people lining 3rd street making it the A number one dirtiest place to go in all of Santa Monica. Goodbye greedy downtown Santa Monica, homeless capital of the united states and home to the most greedy parking meter system known to mankind. I will not be seeing u until my parking is free with my handy dandy handicap parking placard because YOU CANNOT PAY ME ENOUGH to go to dtsm it is so crowdedc conjested trafficy and homeless-ridden--and i am CERTAINLY NOT going to pay the city of Santa Monica for going to the disgusting place they should be cleaning up of homeless people instead of pulling over moms in minivans who r trying to find a stupid parking place amidst holiday madness so she can get crafts at michaels for the 2nd grade class to complete their projects. To the city council people and mayor who voted this greedy system during a time when your constituents are ALREADY struggling financially in this insanely rhigh cost of living area, AT LEAST USE THE MONEY TO CLEAN UP THE DISGUSTING HoMELESS PROBLEM INFESTING BEAUTIFUL DTSM. And then I will go back to downtown again. Until that day I will avoid it like the plague because the homeless population carries some disgusting diseases and you are letting them sleep there etc, that's just gross. I digress.

The fleecing of the "free" citizens of America. California is the largest lame-brain bureaucracy in the nation. So glad I got out when I did.

Yes, all of California is represented by Santa Monica parking meters, how silly of me to forget.

Where's Cool Hand Luke wen you need him? I haven't seen these meters, but I would hope there's a way to block the sensor. Or cover up the solar panel.
