The Abbey, West Hollywood Gay Bar, Bans Bachelorette Parties as Political Statement

Categories: Queer Town

[Update: Upon hearing the news, a good friend of ours asked if straight male bachelor parties are banned, as well. Great question! Brian Rosman, a publicist for The Abbey, says that although that "has never once happened," it would "probably fall under the same ban." Yes, he decides -- "any celebration of straight marriage" is banned from The Abbey. Glad we got that figured out.]

MTV has declared it "The Best Gay Bar in the World." Cranky neighbors (and the West Hollywood Sheriff's station) have declared it a royal pain in the arse.

Now, eternally max-capped WeHo gay bar The Abbey is making a statement of its own: Until marriage is an option for everyone everywhere, ignorant straight chicks in penis hats are exiled from the building.

This will be the first all-out ban on bachelorette parties in the Los Angeles area. But WeHo patriots might be surprised to learn that in Chicago's premiere gayborhood, bachelorette parties have been blacklisted for a few years now. Always one step ahead of us, that Boystown!

However, The Abbey is the clear winner for finest bachelorette-party-ban press release.

"Every Friday and Saturday night, we're flooded with requests from straight girls in penis hats who want to ogle our go-gos, dance with the gays and celebrate their pending nuptials. They are completely unaware that the people around them are legally prohibited from getting married," said David Cooley, Founder of The Abbey. "Over the past 22 years, The Abbey has been a place that accepts everyone, gay, straight, lesbian, transgender, bisexual and everything in between. We love our straight girlfriends and they are welcome here, just not for bachelorette parties."

It has long been a policy at The Abbey to deny admission to groups in costume, including Bachelorette regalia. Bachelorette parties had previously been allowed inside if they removed their costumes. The Abbey's 'bachelorette ban' comes on the heels of a ban on gay marriage in North Carolina and a number of other states across the South. The Abbey encourages other gay-owned and operated establishments to institute their own bans as a sign of solidarity until marriage is legal everywhere for everyone.

The Abbey.
(Easy for The Abbey to say -- that place gets so much business that turning away 10 bottomless drink pits in penis hats would only be a relief.)

Meanwhile, on the somewhat more hard-hitting end of the gay-rights movement, President Obama's gay-marriage endorsement has set into motion a shift of opinion within the black community: The majority of blacks now support marriage equality.

Sooo if a historically conservative minority can come around, it does seem the whining white chicks of West Hollywood might also keep their barfy Chip 'N' Dales circlejerks off the dance floors of the disenfranchised.

What do you think, girls? Offended that you can't flaunt your head penis and bridal sash in whomever's face you please anymore?

Arranging a bachelorette party is tough but it’s totally worth the work! Every single one of us created a customized scavenger hunt t-shirt and ‘Bridezilla’ had to cross off items off our shirts during the evening… we punished the bride with lots of drinks and everyone had lots of laughs. We discovered some incredible ideas at this site… comes highly recommended! www.amazingbacheloretteparty.com

As a straight person in full support of gay rights and of The Abbey's decision, I still have to say it - we're not all breeders, and it can't help you to alienate anyone in support of your cause...

Thank God! I go to gay bars to see men, not women. I believe in political correctness in certain places: the workplace, the courtrooms, schools; all the places where people as humans need fair and equal treatment. But there is no PC where sex and love is concerned. I am not equally attracted to all genders, races, religious creeds, etc. I know what I like and feel no obligation to be an equal opportunity lover.

I'm a straight woman (who, btw, only speaks for myself as an individual and no one else) who gets annoyed with octobroad-organized, penis-hat/necklace/pacifier-wearing bachelorette parties overtaking "straight" bars. I think the Abbey has full rights to ban bachelorette parties from their establishment. Obviously, if you READ THE ARTICLE, the Abbey welcomes gay/straight/bi/trans people and everyone in between. If that's not inclusiveness, I don't know what is. Not many "straight" bars can claim such inclusiveness.

For those complaining about discrimination against straight people...please. It's like saying a womens' domestic violence shelter run by nuns discriminates against men by not allowing men through their doors...like saying a Black organization discriminates against White people by not allowing a member of the KKK through their doors. When there is a safe space for an  oppressed, continuously marginalized group of people, LET THEM HAVE THAT SAFE SPACE FFS. These marginalized people have NOWHERE ELSE TO GO for sanctuary, for friendly, welcoming faces that treat them as human beings BECAUSE they simply exist as human beings, not DESPITE who/what they are.

In response to Jenny Pfau:The medical credentials are exactly the same as for people who claim being gay is biological.  It makes sense if the biological argument for being gay is taken to be true then it is a "condition".  Much like Downs Syndrome, Autism or other birth defects that the majority of the population does not have as well. You or others may rail against this reasoning of the comparison to being Gay as nothing like being retarded - but both are in fact (if you believe being gay is biological) conditions that affect a very small percentage of the population at birth. This makes perfect sense.  You may not like the reasoning but it is sound.Rather than rail against it as not true - give details to back up your argument why this is not the case. But this is why I believe we should not discriminate against homosexuals just like we shouldn't discriminate against others with similar disabilities. So let them marry etc. they can't help the way they were born and maybe over time medical research can help prevent them from being abnormal much like they are working to cure Autism or Cleft Palates.

Interesting. Gay people want their own place where they can be themselves, and droves of straight people attack them as haters. And go on to display their hatredand contempt of gay people. Looking at the comments of straights here makes it clear why gays just want one place that they can call their own. And even thar is too much for the straight world to accept. The heterosexual dictatorship at its best.

Yuval Kremer

The Abbey is a Bar and RESTAURANT.  It is a business that is supposedly OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Public Businesses like the abbey are NOT SUPPOSED TO DISCRIMINATE BASED ON SEXUAL ORIENTATION NOR BASED ON GENDER.  That's what the gay community has fought for, for many years.

If The Abbey wants to exclude straights or women, it needs to become a PRIVATE CLUB, with an annual membership fee. That way, all the dicks can hang out together in "one place that they can call their own".

And this article is about homosexual abuse of power, so please spare us the "heterosexual dictatorship" terminology.

If you're a man, you can't get into many lesbian clubs. If you can, there are rules, and you are told in strict terms how to behave. If you're a man, you can't get into many straight clubs unless you pay someone off. Straight clubs typically maintain a ratio of men to women, and select men whom they know will spend a lot of money on women. If you don't, you aren't welcome back. This automatically excludes gay men, and it's well known among gay men that they simply aren't welcome at many straight clubs for one reason or another, no matter how tolerant they say they are. But gay clubs have to be "tolerant" and "inclusive" and "set an example" and let every walk of life inside to the point that gay men can't even meet other gay men because the crowd of everyone else is so thick. Note how the bachelorettes aren't so "tolerant" that they go to lesbian clubs and feel up women. No, they go to gay clubs, because they don't like women. Well, neither do gay men, so what makes them think gay men should have to cater to them? If lesbian and straight clubs can exclude whomever they want, why can't gay clubs exclude big packs of obnoxious drunk women who think gay men at a bar are their own private petting zoo? Like any other tiny minority, gay men need places to go to be with other gay men, to have some culture and community for themselves. Places like the Abbey are being swamped by straight people who don't care one bit about the gay people around them, but are just there to look at them, laugh at them, grab them without asking, shove their boobs into them, ask stupid and offensive questions, question and insult their sexuality, monopolize the go go dancers, expect free drinks from any straight bartender they can find, and throw hissy fits when they're spurned. Most gay men are sick of it. This one tiny step of banning the worst of the worst is a tiny step in the right direction.

Looks like The Abbey sent in the PR Spokeshole Pros onto the board...they must be scared of a boycott...and they should be b/c it's already started.  "Guest"...Really?...Could you be any more obvious!

Right, Yuval. Everyone here believes you are a cat, just like everyone here believes you are an important and valued customer of the Abbey whom they're going to miss seeing every weekend. It's just not going to be the same without you!

I've read every one of your comments and nowhere is there any consideration for gay people. You obviously don't care whether they can get married and have equal rights. In fact, you said so, when you implied that "civil unions" are fine (even though they don't exist in California, or in most other states). You don't care about gay people having their own community or culture. You don't care about the very real discrimination and prejudice that gay men experience (like we can read in many of the comments here) that causes many of them to come to places like the Abbey to find a world that accepts them and gives them a new start on life. You don't even pull the "I have lots of gay friends" crap. WTF would you go to the Abbey if you have absolutely nothing in common with the gay community? Just to mock them and fight with them and tell them to stop trying to get married because a civil union in another state should be fine? And you think they'll miss you during your boycott?

If you have nothing in common with gays, why is this any of your business and why do you even care to read about it? Are you a straight guy who's upset that now he can't go to the Abbey and nail bachelorettes? If not that, you sound exactly like a homophobe trying to justify being one by saying, "See! Gay people in upscale, classy establishments discriminate against big obnoxious groups of tasteless straight people! They're such hypocrites!" You're the hypocrite - standing up for the rights of some tiny class of people to be rude and obnoxious instead of standing up for all the rights and respect that gay people don't have.

So thanks for boycotting! You know, we really don't like homophobic straight guys coming into you businesses either. Though I doubt you've ever been a regular at any gay bar. Unless... you're a closet case?

SBE, Sam Nazarian's company, owns A LOT of biznesses...they will ALL be targeted in the BOYCOTT that has already commenced...Sam, you better step into this, fire whoever made this decision, and end it!  And the (former) biznesses are: "His SBE owns eight Los Angeles nightclubs and lounges: Area, MI-6, Hyde, XIV, Colony, Eden, MyHouse, MyStudio and The Abbey. He owns each club outright without other investors.", " the restaurant Katsuya, with locations in Brentwood, Hollywood, Glendale and downtown Los Angeles. XIV, in partnership with Chef Michael Mina, opened on the Sunset Strip in October 2008.[1] (XIV closed in August 2011.) Nazarian opened The Bazaar with José Andrés, which is integrated into SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills...", "In 2007, SBE acquired the Sahara Hotel & Casino.[4] he has also invested in several other hotels, such as Viceroy hotels and resorts; Chamberlain West Hollywood; Sheraton Delfina Santa Monica; Sheraton Gateway LAX, and Hilton Garden Inns in resort locales in Southern California and Florida."  "He is also a member of the Southern California Institute of Architecture's Board of Directors,[7] serves on the Los Angeles World Airports' Board of Airport Commissioners"...Source: Wikipedia.  Oh, forgot about "3Wall Development...one of Southern California's largest owners of multi-family housing.", which is probably still owned by Sam's family and not part of SBE...that may be boycotted soon, too.  This decision is too stupid and hateful towards the female straight community to have come from Sam...he needs to step in, fire somebody at The Abbey, and get back to the bizness of being tolerant towards others.

Most upscale restaurants don't allow children's parties. No one wants to go on a romantic  dinner date and spend a lot of $$ only to have tons of screaming kids at a table nearby. This is a same situation. The bar is not banning women just certain types of private parties within the bar. What some people don't get is that this is a gay bar - straights can go to ANY bar in the city - gay people have a more limited selection of places. Wouldn't you want to have your bachelerotte party somewhere else? There are tons of bars in the city.

"Most upscale restaurants don't allow children's parties."  True, but, as the TITLE OF THE ARTICLE states, "The Abbey, West Hollywood Gay Bar, Bans Bachelorette Parties AS POLITICAL STATEMENT"...so, that's NOT a fair comparison!

You talk about "spending lots of $$"...Well, those bacholorette parties spend lots of $$.  And you're comparing bachelorette parties to "screaming kids" at a children's party?  Also, this is a BAR, not a Michelin Star Restaurant, not a LIBRARY...people imbibe alcohol and party here, right?

The bar is banning parties by STRAIGHT WOMEN to make a POLITICAL STATEMENT...that is exactly what this article is about...please take the time to read it again...after 100 comments people forget what the original article was about:

"Now, eternally max-capped WeHo gay bar The Abbey is making a statement of its own: Until marriage is an option for everyone everywhere, ignorant straight chicks...

This will be the first all-out ban on bachelorette parties in the Los Angeles area...

However, The Abbey is the clear winner for finest bachelorette-party-ban press release.

"Every Friday and Saturday night, we're flooded with requests from straight girls in penis hats who want to ogle our go-gos, dance with the gays and celebrate their pending nuptials. They are completely unaware that the people around them are legally prohibited from getting married [I CALL B5 ON THAT STATEMENT]," said David Cooley, Founder of The Abbey...The Abbey's 'bachelorette ban' comes on the heels of a ban on gay marriage in North Carolina and a number of other states across the South. The Abbey encourages other gay-owned and operated establishments to institute their own bans as a sign of solidarity until marriage is legal everywhere for everyone.""...it does seem the whining white chicks of West Hollywood might also keep their barfy Chip 'N' Dales circlejerks off the dance floors of the disenfranchised.""gay people have a more limited selection of places"...and, apparently, the proprietors of The Abbey and the supporters of this Sexist Heterophobic Ban want to make that situation all the worse.I'm a straight man, so I won't be having my bachelorette party anywhere.  This was never about me...it's about segregation and oppression."There are tons of bars in the city", as you state...wouldn't it be nice if they were all welcoming to all genders and sexual orientations, unlike The Abbey ???

Yuval Kremer

Oh, and message to "Flipnslide"...Don't twist the facts...this is a ban specifically against straight women celebrating bachelorette parties, NOT generally against partying groups wearing costumes...nice try, though.

There has got to be a better way to raise awareness than shunning and shaming.  Equal rights for the LGBTQ population is the goal and I believe energy in that movement would be better spent turning straight women/bachelorettes/etc into fierce allies not turning them away at the Abbey!  Bachelorettes are NOT the oppressors.  We all need to join together to create change.

They should allow anyone in for anything, otherwise they're just as guilty of pre-judgement as the people they "think" there making an example of. I'm strsight& married, & one of the very few things that made me sensitive to their (gays) fight for gay marriage is that I have been toa few gay clubs & while there I appreciated how non-judgmental every one was there. Those people did lead by example & I was forced to respect that. I think they need to rethink this banning choice. I believe it will only create more hate & difference between the sexual preferences. True, it may not be fair, but if we look at this country's history on sensitive social change inssues then we'd see that change like this requires perseverance, patience, long suggesting & people who stand up & lead by example. Please don't give up yet, I think it is possible to all live in equality & peace. It's gonna happen!

I don't mind straight women at a gay bar.  They generally class up the place. But I've noticed recently large parties of super-drunk, super-obnoxious young women have taken to hanging out at gay bars, being rude and intrusive and ruining the vibe for everyone else.  If I wanted to see loud, stupid drunk chicks, I'd go to Busbys, thank you.  They should show a little more respect for the venue and the core clientele.

Yuval Kremer
Yuval Kremer

So, in that case, super-drunk (are they that way b/c the Abbey is irresponsibly serving?), super-obnoxious people should be banned ACROSS THE BOARD, not just those that are female, straight, and celebrating a wedding...and I doubt all bachelorette parties are like that or more obnoxious than their surroundings !

Renny Tannis
Renny Tannis

Yuval, it helps if you've read the article, and my original comment.  The Abbey is not banning women ACROSS THE BOARD (Yuval: Please note, all caps do not provide logic your claims otherwise lack).  Just bachelorette parties.  Also, nowhere did I call for a ban on anyone from any gay bar.  I was just noting a sad social trend occurring in gay bars.  Deal with it.  Climb down off that high horse before it throws you.
