Asians Surpass Latinos in Immigration to United States

Asians have, since 2009, surpassed Latinos in immigration to the United States, according to a new Pew study. So all you immigrant haters out there have a new group to target!

Asians outpaced Latinos in sending folks stateside (36 percent of new immigrants in 2010 were Asian, compared to 31 percent who were Latino) -- and as much as 15 percent of the Asian immigrant population in America is "unauthorized," aka illegal. (For Latinos, that number is more like 45 percent. Ay, caramba!)

The Pew Research Center report, "The Rise of Asian Americans," says an Asian immigrant is a quality immigrant:

Asian Americans are the highest-income, best-educated and fastest-growing racial group in the United States.

The study found that 3 out of 4 Asian American adults were born abroad, 6 in 10 of Asian newcomers have at least a bachelor's degree, and Asian immigrants are three times as likely as other immigrants to get their green cards through work sponsorship (as opposed to, say, family status).

Nearly half of all Asian Americans (49 percent) have a college degree (compared to 28 percent of all American adults), and they have an average household income of $66,000 versus $49,800 for all Americans.

That's progress. According to Pew:

A century ago, most Asian Americans were low-skilled, low-wage laborers crowded into ethnic enclaves and targets of official discrimination.

Sounds like they were the original Mexicans.

Chinese Americans, Filipino Americans, Indian Americans, Vietnamese Americans, Korean Americans and Japanese Americans comprise 83 percent of the United States' population with Asian heritage.

You sometimes hear from Asian immigrants that things are better, economically, back home in places like Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo. But the Asian immigrants surveyed here say it ain't so:

Just 12% say that if they had to do it all over again, they would remain in their country of origin. And by lopsided margins, Asian Americans say the U.S. is preferable to their country of origin in such realms as providing economic opportunity, political and religious freedoms, and good conditions for raising children.

The changing ethnic and racial make-up of this state and this country has been debated since at least the early 1800's. At one time it was thought that German would become the second language of the country due to all the often well educated German immigration.  And the last time I checked, more people claimed to be at least part German in descent than any other ethnic group - most people not counting English/Scottish as being an ethnic group.   And at other times this country was going to be mainly Irish or Italian or black. And during the past hundred and some years, California was going to be majority Chinese, Japanese, Black or Latino - and none of that happened.  And now the last two groups are going into relative decline (the Latino immigrant population is now actually declining) while a much wider mix of Asians are coming to California. But the big surprise may come come with the collapse of the Euro.  Very recently, I've seen more young Europeans in their 20's in Downtown than I've ever seen anywhere  in LA since I was born.  And none of them are registered as immigrants.  They're all just... here.  And so the mix will continue..  And that's what makes someone's recent suggestion that Spanish will become a second language in LA so ironic.    For two hundred years that's been said about language after language.  I can even remember as a kid -  after immigration had slowed from Mexico for a generation - the owner of the major Spanish language newspaper say he would be the last publisher of the paper since soon their would be no one left in LA who spoke Spanish. But he was no more right than the person who thinks that any other language than English will be the way we will all collectively communicate with each other.  And that will make everyone's lives a lot easier as I simply can not find anyone to translate all my German great-great grand parent's letters for me.

and this is why I wonder about some Weekly journalists: why do you have to inject your personal commentary?? why can't you just do your job and give the facts w/out the whining bs?? > and             > Really?? Unnecessary and detracts from the story. In addition, Many groups have been the 'original Mexicans' and had a tough time w/prejudice for being the 'new kid on the block' - including, but not limited to the Irish, Germans and Italians! Ever see 'Gangs of New York'??! It'll get you out of your 'whoa is me' attitude... no, you weren't the 'only ones' nor will you be the last... and at least for the Irish, they even spoke the language - and mostly, were legal! -and yet, were still the 'low men on the totem pole'!! So, you add those two factors in and it's no wonder... the more pple assimilate, the better it gets... And, at least for Most pple, they're not so much 'immigration haters', as they are 'Illegal Immigration haters' - yes, that's right, there's a difference; as much as you and others would like to blend the two, they're worlds apart!! See, for those of you that don't understand, the immigration laws were made for lots of very good, different reasons - they helped check the non-stop flow of pple into the country - kind of like the stop and go lights on the freeway on ramps! Too many too quickly ends up in a clogged, messed up system (medical and education anyone??!!) It's Basic Econ 101 - Supply and Demand - not that tough to comprehend, but for some, seems an impossibility! So, no it's not 'racism', but yes, it is economism - or something to that effect:) We don't want to end up like other horribly Over populated places - then, life becomes Misery (as we see on the LA freeways every day!) So, rather than throw around pejoratives, let's try and look at the subject objectively and come up w/Solutions, rather than putting our heads in the sand like proverbial ostriches til it's Too Late...

Yeah thats why theres finally going to be a reform that will actually provide a route to legalization, other thatn waiting ten years in your own country. That was and is rediculous and was never going to happen. As a "dreamer" and economism conscious person I do support securing borders mainly so the Tallis' and cartel cant come in.My point is basically that illegal immigrants in most cases have not had any feasable choices.Family integrity before anything.

"6 in 10 of Asian newcomers have at least a bachelor's degree, and Asian immigrants are three times as likely as other immigrants to get their green cards through work sponsorship (as opposed to, say, family status)" And because of this, I say come on in. It's like someone bringing a cooked meal to a party. Instead of people showing up to eat and run...

This is good news and it is long overdue. We SHOULD receive more immigrants from Asia based upon population alone. India and China are the most populous nations on earth yet the number one provider of emigrants is Mexico. Were it based upon merit and ability, as our current immigration laws are partially designed to achieve, we would have a larger Asian population in SoCal than Latino population. The reason we're so inundated with the poor and marginally educated is that we act as a dumping ground for the unwanted excess population from Mexico and Central America.

THANK YOU. God, they're making hispanics seem like they just come here to be useless fuck ups. Same with blacks. Don't they think that if hispanics and blacks could "make it" and be successful like the other immigrants/ minorities that they would? Geez, racist bastards.
