Cristina Garcia stops the Calderons in AD 58. But she looks so ... nice.
Updated to reflect the final vote totals.

What happened on June 5 in Assembly District 58 covering Bell Gardens, Downey, Pico Rivera and Cerritos, where government reformer Cristina Garcia beat Democratic darling Tom Calderon, of the Calderon dynasty, and will almost certainly win in November?

Political corruption is what happened, in the city of Bell and elsewhere. Democratic voters stampeded away from the Calderon name, choosing Garcia on the strength of her work as spokeswoman for BASTA, the Bell Association to Stop the Abuse. Garcia is so clean that the reformist "let's fix this trash heap called California" group known as California Forward has a glowing bio of her on its site. The Calderon dynasty (enough already!) is reeling.

The GOP gal, Patricia A. Kotze-Ramos, will face Garcia because she came in first in the field jammed with Democrats. But in November, Kotze-Ramos has very, very little chance and won't win in this district that's only one-quarter Republican.

Here's the final vote, with 100% of votes counted:
Sultan "Sam" Ahmad, 983 votes, 3.8%
Tom Calderon, 6,011 votes, 23%
Daniel Crespo, 1,720 votes, 6.5%
Cristina Garcia, 6,906 votes, 26.5%
Luis H. Marquez, 3,221 votes, 12.3%
Patricia A. Kotze-Ramos, 7,272 votes, 27.9%

Meaning that in November, an actual activist full of anger and plans inspired by watching the city of Bell scandal in disgust is going to Sacramento.

And you can count the serious activists in the 120-member California State Legislature on one hand, as long as you don't include your thumb or little finger. Or either of the other fingers.

Garcia is also an adjunct professor of math, who taught at Los Angeles Community College, which means she will become one of perhaps five people in the IQ-challenged California State Legislature who reads and can understand the budget she is voting on. The rest do whatever they are told by party bosses.

Of course, Garcia may get crushed, her earnest hopefulness misshaped and squeezed until she's just another feeder at the trough.

That's what happened to activist (turned Speaker, turned Congresswoman) Karen Bass, as the Weekly reported here in the story headlined "The Curious Case of Karen Bass."

But there's always hope. California Forward describes Garcia in its profile like this:

Cristina Garcia had left her hometown of Bell Gardens behind, as did many people who grew up there, to find a better and more exciting life. But, a family illness drew her unwillingly back to what she considered a dead-end town.

"We have this brain drain, this culture drain," she said. "Our city is never going to move forward as long as that's the case."

As soon as Garcia realized this, she decided to stay in this largely Latino suburb and its surrounding communities, and she has found her calling, as well as the unexpected glare of the spotlight.

Garcia, 33, is the spokesperson for BASTA, the Bell Association to Stop the Abuse, a community group that formed in July after the administrator salary scandal in neighboring Bell broke in the Los Angeles Times. Since its founding, BASTA -- which means "enough" in Spanish -- has spearheaded signature-gathering efforts to recall council members, organized community forums, and launched voter registration drives.

Yet even in the midst of all she's seen, Garcia has emerged with her ideals about government intact.

"We want better government," she said. In advocating for greater checks and balances, Garcia concedes, "in some ways, we want more government."

She decries the boy's club of politics and community groups that get too insular.

She thinks elected officials need to be more accessible and more connected to their districts. But people also need to be more educated about government's process. Ultimately, she'd like to see diverse coalitions working together to accomplish their community's goals.

"My hope is that (California) can be a role model for the rest of the country and the world for how different groups can come together and work together," she said.

X-BellCop ? I think you are a dam sick S.O.B. Very soon we will get rid of every corrup cop in our Police Department and if that means to disband the complete department.. so be it ...Enjoy your high salaries and benefits while you can because is not going to last for to long, remember that the city is broke thanks to the BPD,Rizzo and the Old City Council. Two down one more to go. Ps: The Sheriff is " Coming to Town " !!!!!!

So I guess you would rather have Rizzo and the council get paid more than the police officers to serve the community and save lives? Because that's exactly what would happen if Christina didn't come and save our town. I wasn't sure about her at first too, but I can see her results: Rizzo is gone and the council makes $10K a years instead of $100k a year. Stop hating and open your eyes.

@BellBizOwner: Don't get me wrong.Of course we are very, very, very happy that Rizzo and the old council members are gone.Remember that the Police Department blow the whistle cuz Rizzo wanted to low our salaries and benefits to mantain his $ 800,000.oo a year salary. That's when the Police said no to him and he treat to disband the BPD.Then after the blow we contact Mr. Briones who eventualy hired Ms. Cristina Garcia to work for the BPOA. By the way, I will like to thaks the Bell community and every business for their support in electing our candidates for the city council and for their financial support for our well paid salaries, benefits and retirement. Thanks a lot BellBizOwner for your taxes and fees.Stay strong and support the BPOA with your hard work and $$$$... You are a true American.God bless you.

Regardless of what you all people say, I just want to thanks Cristina Garcia for the fine job that she has done for the Bell Police Department.By doing the job, that the BPOA paid her to do.Of course The BPOA didn't paid her direct. They paid Basta owner Leo Briones and he paid her.Nothing matter any more. The Police got what they want and that is to keep their high salaries and benefits from Rizzo's Admin. The Bell Police is in Bell to Stay and it's stronger than before, regardless of what anybody says or do.The BPOA are in "CONTROL" of the city including it's business and affair. BPOA (Bell Police Officer Association) Rocks !!!!

By "damage and divide the community" do you mean bring to light the outrageous salaries of the city council and city manager? As a business owner in Bell our taxes are outrageous and all to pay some jerk city manager a MILLION DOLLAR COMPENSATION PACKAGE! For a small town like Bell, making several times more than the president of the United States. Why didn't any of these politicians care about the small businesses being crushed by taxes? BECAUSE IT LET THEM MAKE SIX FIGURE SALARIES FOR A PART TIME JOB. It is absolutely ridiculous to attack Cristina for bringing this injustice to light, and Mariobeltran... because you don't like her doesn't mean she is a lesbian. I'm surprised LA Weekly even allows slanderous posts like yours.

You're such an idiot. This is a win for everyone in Bell. She will do more for Bell then Nestor Valencia has done. This division is from Nestor Valencia, Ismael Morales, Nora Saenz and all the Bell Resident Militants. They go to every meeting and stir shit up. BASTA! BASTA! BASTA! PS: Hope Mr. Valencia's eye is healing.

I think the writer of this article most be in Russia or maybe somewhere in the Amazon jungle, she has no dam idea or clue who Cristina Garcia is. I will advice The writer ( Jill Stewart) the next time she wants to write an article about this fake woman, to go to Bell City and get your facts straight about Cristina Garcia.Go to Bell City and meet with residents, talk to them and ask how do they feel and think about her (the self called reformer).Go to Bell City and see how this "Transformer" damage and divided the community for her political gain and ambitions. Go, go to Bell City and see in what misery the residents are living thanks to Cristina Garcia and her Basta Gang.

Mariobeltran
Mariobeltran

Garcia the 33 year old that for the first time in her life became a Democrat last year and lied to the democratic voteres that she's been a democrat all her life!!! The DUI convict that makes bad decissions and put other at risk. The Garcia that's a lesbian and "only needs the votes of the woman" the Garcia that devided a community (Bell) and took over a city because it's her way or the highway!

Take That Mario Beltran!
Take That Mario Beltran!

This is such a refreshing story - and a Latina math professor to boot, what are the odds of that?  It is ironic that she comes from the same hometown as political hack and felon Mario Beltran.  Mario just got his ass handed to him running Cedillo's chief of staff's campaign to replace him, Arturo Chavez.  Too bad, because Arturo was a good guy that got caught up in the back rooms of political "kingmakers."  Beltran also was an ardent Calderon supporter too although it seems that Tom could have benefitted more from a jock strap than from Beltran.  All these political staffers thinking they can run campaigns and carrying themselves as the gurus of Latino politics should cringe in shame.
