Updated at the bottom with a second death in the attack. first posted at 8:46 p.m. Thursday. Headline has changed.

Three people were shot, one fatally, on Centinela Avenue near Ladera Heights, police told the Weekly.

The attack in the 5700 block of West Centinela not far from the Fox Hills Mall and Culver City's Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary was reported about 6 p.m., LAPD Officer Karen Rayner told us.

... one was hospitalized in critical condition and another was stabilized at a hospital, she said.

The L.A. Fire Department stated that the deceased was "DOA," or dead on (paramedics') arrival; the stabilized victim was described as being in serious condition, the LAFD's Matt Spence said.

Cops believe a lone gunman, still on-the-loose, is suspected, Rayner said.

The attack might have happened at an apartment complex, she said.

An officer at the LAPD's Pacific Division said the shooting happened near the city's border with unincorporated Ladera Heights, which is patrolled by the sheriff's department.

[Added]: A neighbor told Fox 11 News that blood was on the ground near the pool area of the apartment complex where the shooting took place.

Fox 11 confirmed that that attack took place at the Alessio Apartment Homes.

We heard one report that a white SUV -- the type of vehicle reportedly seen leaving the scene of the crime -- had been pulled over in the LAPD's 77th Street Division area and that the driver was possibly wearing body armor. But a watch commander at the division could not confirm that.

[Update at 8:08 a.m. Friday]: Police say a second victim died at a hospital overnight and that the third man injured might actually be a suspect, according to City News Service.

The Los Angeles Times, meanwhile, put it this way: One person has been "detained" in connection with the shooting while a fourth, possibly injured, was still being sought.

The attack might have occurred during a robbery, cops say.
