Ecstasy Is Safe, Dr. Perry Kendall Says: He's An Idiot

A Canadian doctor flew off the deep end this week when he declared that pure ecstasy was essentially safe.

While many still debate the safety of MDMA, the jury is still out -- and there's plenty of anecdotal evidence, including deaths in Los Angeles, the rave capital of the nation, to promote caution.

Dr. Perry Kendall says that it's the adulterated ecstasy that's giving us the problems:

There has been a rash of issues with ecstasy cut with a toxin called PMMA, including 16 deaths tied to the adulterated E in Canada last summer.

However, many of the ecstasy related deaths in the United States, including the 2010 demise of 15-year-old Sasha Rodriguez following Electric Daisy Carnival in Los Angeles and the 2007 death of 20-year-old Michelle Yuenshan Lee after Monster Massive at the L.A. Sports Arena, came at the hands of straight-up ecstasy, medical experts have told us.

To say that it's only adulterated E that's the problem is to mislead young ravers into thinking pure MDMA is always safe. That doesn't seem to be the case. Ecstasy intoxication is a cause of death all its own. Just ask the L.A. coroner's office.

Rave kids work off rumor and innuendo via online discussion boards, where anything but science is spoken. One of the most common things heard about ecstasy is that it's safe so long as it's pure.

Dr. Kendall wants it legalized in Canada. In the meantime, he just gave ravers more disinformation they can use to gamble with their lives.

Holy crap, do you actually get paid for this gig?

MDMA is NOT "cut with a toxin called PMMA".  At least, not by anyone who wants to make a second sale, since it is bloody lethal even at very low levels. PMA is an undesireable (to say the least) BYPRODUCT of poorly executed chemistry in the MDMA manufacturing process.  Might make sense to do some bloody homework before you start calling professional researchers "idiots" in your headlines, eh wot?

Up to this point, I thought you were simply underinformed and unmotivated to do much actual digging to flesh out the details of this particular subject.  Now I see that you're simply predisposed to bolster a point of view that is woefully uninformed by actual facts.

Medical "experts" have informed your royal 'us-ness' that Rodriguez and Lee's deaths were the result of "straight-up" ecstasy?  Meaning pure MDMA?  Or meaning whatever was in the pill they took?  Or what??

I'll tell you what.  You post some actual proof of these "experts" opinion being what you claim it is, then show us some evidence that they actually ARE experts (kinda like the guy you're slagging off above), and I'll publicly apologize and admit that you are the king of  crack reporters on the subject of illicit drug overdoses within the "Rave Culture".  Deal?

Yeah, I didn't think so.

he is correct and not an idiot...pure ecstasy or MDMA is non-addictive and non-lethal because it is water soluble and anything over 500-600mcg is simply eliminated in urine the same way taking more vitamin c than your body can absorb is eliminated....but the analogues and derivatives that are often sold as street drugs don't necessarily have the same properties and that's where the problem lies....yeh, my best friend is a doctor with a minor in psychoactive medicine...cause some ass will say idk what i'm talking about...read PiHKAL by Shulgin and you will understand...

It looks to me like Dennis Romero has been on a MDMA-scare campaign for many months now. All the medical research I have ever read suggests that MDMA would be close to 100% safe in a clinical setting where any dangerous changes in body temperature or hydration could be addressed. I'm also willing to guess it will be legalized for controlled use in such environments within five years because it have proven very effective at helping vets recover from PTSD. MAPS, the multi-disciplinary association for psychedelic studies has been monitoring international studies and conducting their own for some time now and, in their conclusion, the drug consistently proves indispensable for psycho-therapeutic intervention. It really feels like tenuously grounded yellow journalism to claim the drug is dangerous based on negative outcomes (no matter how tragic) when they occurred in overcrowded "mega-rave" environments with sweltering temperatures, really loud music, glacially slow EMT response times, etc. Furthermore, following the links he provides does not, in my admittedly cursory scan, appear to lead directly to any evidence the teenagers mentioned in the article ingested pure MDMA. The medical establishment has a tremendously medieval attitude towards the category of street "drugs." Recall recent television news footage of an MD describing bath salts in Florida as a "new type of LSD" despite the fact those two substances are not chemically similar. I'm very prone to conclude these autopsies may have failed to test for the whole range of so many different substances these kids pills might have been cut with. If your goal is simply to help keep kids safe, why not be progressive and realistic and write about groups like dancesafe who test the purity of submitted ecstasy tabs and post the results online.

Sources to your claims? Sounds like Dr. Kendall really hit a nerve with you.

As long as we're taking into account things for which there is "plenty of anecdotal evidence," it would make sense to admit that plenty of people have taken ecstasy and lived. And there's plenty of anecdotal evidence that the doctor you call an "idiot" is correct that adulterated substances pose more harm. But of course, if you're only looking to bolster your own opinion, you can pick and choose whichever bit of anecdotal evidence that suits your purpose.
