Green Joy being raided yesterday.
Updated at the bottom with three arrests and more details including that the raids happened at ... 4:20 p.m! First posted at 8:04 a.m.

Cops raided a pair of marijuana dispensaries in Woodland Hills yesterday for alleged "illegal sales" of marijuana, the LAPD said in a statement last night.

The department wouldn't reveal which pot shops were hit, but a witness told the Weekly they were Green Joy at 22851 Ventura Blvd. and Green Magic at 23002 Ventura Blvd.

The LAPD scheduled a press conference for ...

... 1:30 p.m. today at the Topanga Area Community Police Station, 21501 Schoenborn St. The department states:

Items recovered and on display will include marijuana, hashish, narcotics paraphernalia, money and other evidence of the illegal sales of marijuana.

The search warrant raids were carried out by Topanga Divison narcotics officers, according to the LAPD.

The two pot shops, we were told, are "sister stores." At least one person was seen being taken into custody, and an owner was still apparently being sought, our source said.

The raids come only days from an expected vote by the L.A. City Council that could wipe out all of the city's dispensaries.

Cannabis shop owners met last night at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel downtown, we were told, and some believed that three dozen or so additional outlets were being targeted by cops.

While sharing marijuana with the medically needy in California is legal, police have argued that selling it for profit is not.

The LAPD has been on a tear in the Valley, with the department boasting that it had wiped out all cannabis stores in its Devonshire Division.

[Update at 3:42 p.m.]: The LAPD issued a statement this afternoon.

If this isn't a middle finger to the pro-marijuana contingent, we don't know what is: The police put the time of yesterday's searches at an exact 4:20 p.m. If you'll recall, officers from the same division raided at least one dispensary in the area on 4/20 -- April 20. Yep.

Arrestees from yesterday's raid were named as 25-year-old Mia Shomer, 37-year-old Fahar Kinhi, and 36-year-old Alexander Blinderman. All were booked on suspicion of possessing marijuana for sale and held in lieu of $20,000 bail each.

Two others were sought as part of the investigation, the LAPD said.

A house was also hit as part of the search-warrant based operation. It was in the 5700 block of Wilhelmina Ave., cops said. All three locations are owned by the same family, according to the department.

Here's what officers say they found:

Investigators recovered approximately $40,000 in cash from a hidden floor safe at the residence. At the two dispensaries, investigators recovered approximately $2,000 in cash and approximately 30 pounds of marijuana, with an estimated street value of $90,000. Also recovered from the dispensary in the 23000 block of Ventura Boulevard was over 100 individual vials of hashish packaged for sale and over 225 marijuana plants.

Four large commercial safes were located at the dispensaries. Investigators from the LAPD's Commercial Crimes Division Safe Detail opened the safes and found large quantities of marijuana and cash.

If you have any more info on these shops, cops want you to drop a dime: 818-756-4850.

I guess we can all thank Phillip Morris, because as you a should know by now, PM is buying up a bunch of land for thier own means to grow marijuana. This is because in about 2-3 years, when marijuana becomes completely legal; PM will have put all of those "small businesses"  out of business, leading the way for Phillip Morris to have complete control; yet again..... I encourage all to look up this public information.....it makes me sick.

This "story" about Phillip Morris buying up huge tracks of land to plant marijuana has been making the rounds for years.  In order for that to be real they must have an inside source that says that marijuana will be legal in 2-3 years.  They don't.

Marijuana is currently a schedule 1 drug.  There is no way to make a schedule 1 drug legal.  The country as a whole is not going to make marijuana completely legal.

It is not up to Phillip Morris.  Have you been reading what the DEA is doing right here in California?

This "story" of Phillip Morris buying land to grow legal marijuana is a fairy tale.

That's not what's being discussed. Everyone agrees that the dispensaries need to be controlled. This is about shutting them all down, despite the fact that it is legal in CA.

Your costs for invitations and for food and beverages servedat the event are not considered contributions if they remain under certain limits. These expenses on behalf of a candidate are limited to $1,000 per election; expenseson behalf of a political party are limited to $2,000 per year. (A husband and wife may each spend up to the limit. Their combined limits would be: $2,000 per candidate, per election, and $4,000 per year for a political party.) Have you heard about Super PACs in the news? Why are they in the news?Because they are allowed to receive millionsand millions of dollars in donations to promotea political candidate their own way, withoutany connection to the candidate's committee.A Super PAC is 100% independent fromthe candidate, but works to promote the candidate. How do you start a Super PAC to promote MARIJUANA legalization candidates? Please copy and paste this page and send it to every oneof your 420 friends! Thank you! START YOUR OWN POLITICAL MARIJUANA SUPER PACAND RAISE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO PROMOTEYOUR CHOICE OF MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION CANDIDATE Study all of the information on these two websites.Remember, when you start a Super PAC you'll be ableto collect millions and millions of dollars in donations. (1) http://www.opensecrets.org (2) http://www.fec.gov If you can't find all of the information in the above websites, than find a computer geeky nerd new friend to help you.Every pothead needs a nerd. The U.S. Supreme Court has made is absolutely clear: you can starta Super PAC to promote marijuana legalization candidates. Who would want to  donate a lot of money to a Super PACwhichpromotes a marijuana legalization candidate? (a) Sports figures, and every Major Sports Club in America, see daily news, major sports figures are arrested all thetime for marijuana, the bigger the sports team, the more thenews coverage on the marjiuana arrest of a major leaguesports team member. (b) People who want medical marijuana to be legalizedunder federal law. (c) People who want less government control of theirpersonal lives. People who feel the government has grownlike cancer and infringes upon our U.S. Constitutional rightsto privacy in our homes. (d) People who are religious and believe in the Holy Bible,Old Testament, Genesis: God Gave Us Every Seed Bearing Plant. (e) People who are deeply outraged that private-for-profit prisons are making so much money off of prison labor, while they are receiving funds from tax payers to imprisonpeople, that with the combined profit of tax payers beingforced to pay taxes to fund private-for-profit prisons and the profit from the prison labor, Corrections Corporationof America IS NOW SELLING SHARES OF STOCK ONNASDAQ. (f) People who believe we are suffering from Unfair TradeRestriction and Economic Treason because it is legal toimport hemp products from foreign countries and sellthem in the United States  of America, including sellingthem at Walmart, but it is not legal for farmers in the U.S.A.to grow hemp.  This is ECONOMIC TREASON. (g) People who do not want their children denied anycollege loans or grants simply because they had a marijuana conviction as a teenager.  Why should a personbe convicted to a lifetime of ignorance because theycan't afford to pay for a college education, which isnecessary in this complex and high tech civilization?Denying kids any college loans and grants becauseof a tiny marijuana conviction as a teenager keepspeople down, keeps people poor, and is not inthe best interests of a civilized society. (h) People who work in the entertainment industry, particularly in California, actors, agents, union membersare deeply affected by marijuana arrests in their communityall the time. (i) Corporations which currently produce beer and wine willbe happy to donate to Super PACs topromote marijuana legalization candidates becausewhen marijuana is legal they will be able to substitutea weed which grows like wildflowers, marijuana, for harderto grow crops of hops and barley and grapes for beer and wine.Marijuana beer at 5% strength and marijuana wine at 10%strength will out-sell other beverages. What is a MARIJUANA  Super PAC?  A Super PAC is a political action committee that asks for millions andmillions of dollars of donations, and even very small donations, from Corporations and People, and uses the money to promote a candidate of their own choice,in their own way. A Super PAC can use a candidate to get their marijuana legalizationmessage across, while appearing to do what is perfectly legal -promote a candidate of their choice. The real 'problem' does not lie with the shops themselves.  I can tell you that Green Magic and Green Joy both operated with some of the strictest and by the book rules, whereas many other dispensaries who are much more lenient with their policies and involved in other shady practices, continue to operate.  The problem lies with the doctors who will write a Rx to anybody willing to shell out the money.  Green Magic and Green Joy operated with the intent to help people with medical issues, not just anybody wanting to get high, and they made that very clear.  However, with a doctor's prescription to get people through the door, not much could be done by the dispensary to filter out the ones who truly need it from those who don't.  My point is the owners and staff are good people with good intentions.  Shut down the shady doctors rather than those sinply trying to help the patients.

Medical Patient
Medical Patient

Ms Green, before you speak about something you know nothing about, let me tell you this.  I was a patient at Green Magic, a dispensary that only catered to those 21 and older (not 18+) in order to make sure the patients would be more likely to be responsible with their products.  They were a great group of people, probably some of the ones who were hauled off to jail simply for working there.  Were the owners making a profit?  I don't know.  Should it matter?  Absolutely not.  This is a capitalist society, and they are selling products that they can legally possess to patients who can also legally possess.  Everything else is just using the law to drive an agenda. 1) I am a legal medical marijuana patient; a legitimate one, like many of us are.  I have ADHD and what DSM-IV labels "Severe Depression without Psychosis".  Not all patients are burn-outs faking migraines.  Yes, that happens, but if they weren't faking migraines, they could buy it on the street with a little more effort.  It's not hard to get weed if you're social and look around.  I'm not even that social.  But, I flew into St. Louis and bought 8 grams of marijuana from a local, even though it is illegal in Missouri.  I flew into Frankfurt Germany once, and within two hours of landing, I had 8 grams of very, very powerful marijuana. 2) Without cannabis I am so anxious that I pull out my own facial hair with my fingernails, leaving my face with lacerations, infections and long term scarring.  These genetic medical conditions are dramatically worsened with alcohol intake (especially the interaction with the medication), making it impossible for me to drink alcohol without going into a depressive tailspin for weeks afterward.  The same is not true for marijuana.  It actually calms me down so I can focus, and helps me sleep at night - my ADHD medication is an amphetamine which makes it hard to sleep. 3) I see a psychiatrist every month, who monitors my condition, and is aware of my cannabis intake, which is well above that of the average patient.  Among other medicines, my psychiatrist prescribes Klonopin to reduce anxiety, however I don't fill it or take it because it spaces me out and I can't think straight or interact with people, unlike with cannabis. 4) I don't have long hair, I shave, and not only do I maintain a full time job, but I earn 6 figures several times over. I'm a very skilled and highly esteemed computer software engineer and executive. I guarantee that if you're reading this, you've used my software. 5) I have 2 young children, 7 and 4.  They won't know about Daddy's medicine until we can have an honest conversation about the merits and drawbacks of marijuana use.  I am not ashamed, and I will teach my children the truth about the dangers of marijuana, because they won't be getting it from the government.  Unfortunately, Green Magic was where I went to fill my e-cigarette cartridges (probably those "pre-packaged" canisters mentioned in the article).  With an e-cigarette, Daddy's medicine is not only healthier, but produces no odor for the kids to smell. 6) I have no criminal record whatsoever, and I have never been arrested for anything.  I live in a nice Jewish neighborhood in one of the most affluent areas of the San Fernando Valley.  I am very active in the philanthropic community and my local synagogue. Ms Green, I challenge you to provide any rational justification for why a dispensary should not be allowed to operate in a reasonably nice neighborhood (Green Magic was in a strip mall next to a beauty salon and some restaurants, buried in an alcove that I had a hard time finding the first time I went), whose customers are people very similar to me (middle class professionals, not ghetto gang bangers), who cause no trouble (nor are they looking for trouble), respect the law by seeking it legally, and just need to buy cannabis to cover their medical issue. Another example of stupid law enforcement is in San Francisco.  The DEA pressured the landlord of a collective called "Medithrive" to evict them from his building.  The reason the DEA gave to him was that Medithrive was too close to a school.  OK, reasonable, until you consider that Medithrive was 1//2 block away from the 16th & Mission BART station, which is crackhead / rapist / wino / schizophrenia central.  You can't breath when you reach street level because of the horribMarijuana le smell.  I'm 6'2", 250 lbs, and I'm afraid to go there.  Actually the school that was close actually wrote a letter of support to keep the dispensary there because they volunteered at the school.  Best news though is that Medithrive didn't shut down after being evicted.  Now they deliver for free by Internet or phone order.  It saves me from going to 16th and Mission anymore.  When I'm in SF, they deliver right to my hotel.  Thanks, DEA. To your statement about questionable medicine, I'm sorry, but you are flat out wrong.  There are plenty of scientifically vetted studies that show far lower physical and societal harm than alcohol or cigarettes.  THC has been studied for centuries, and scientifically, in the modern sense, in the last 2 centuries.  One recent study concluded that there's no link to cancer in a study that followed subjects for 30 years, with those subjects smoking at least one joint per day.  The rates of cancer were no greater than the general population.  The theory is that THC constricts blood vessels, which prevents the lungs from absorbing carcinogens into the blood stream.  And that's assuming smoking is the only way to ingest THC.  Green Magic sold a number of different alternatives to smoking.  THC infused drinks, e-Liquid for eCigarettes (boils the THC liquid into vapor), cannabis wax for vaporizing or cooking (extracted by blowing carbon dioxide through marijuana flowers), and candies and chocolates. There are 3,939 liquor licenses in the City of Los Angeles, meanwhile the City Council is debating whether to allow 100 dispensaries or none at all, which is pretty stupid, considering there are plenty of incorporated cities (West Hollywood, Santa Monica, etc) that these rules don't apply to.  Furthermore, Green Magic was walking distance from Calabasas (outside of LA City) and the Conejo Valley (not even LA County).  This was clearly a message from the LAPD given the times and dates, and I think it's reprehensable to spend time on busting these guys when plenty of houses in my area are being robbed and there are drunk drivers all over the place. So take in sum that the social ills of Marijuana don't come close to the benefit real patients derive from it, and Marijuana's social ills don't come close to two perfectly legal substances: 1) Tobacco; 2) Alcohol, neither of which are as easy or cost effective to manufacture as Marijuana.  There has never been a death directly attributable to THC overdose, whereas the other two mentioned contribute to fatal alcohol poisoning, liver destruction, lung cancer, high blood pressure, and strokes.   Alcohol and cigarettes are available without a prescription in any corner store, but Marijuana is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance.  It's in the same category as Cocaine, Heroin, and MDMA.  Schedule I is the most controlled group of substances.  OK, fine, but why is Morphine in Schedule II?  Is marijuana more dangerous than morphine or Ketamine, a powerful human and veterinary anesthetic?  I don't think so.  And it appears to be ok that Phillip Morris and Anheuser-Busch make a profit, doesn't it?  If I smoke, I get lung cancer, smell, and send a negative message to my children through example.  If I drink, same thing except different serious maladies.  And I might get drunk and smack my wife around, beat up my kids, or do something disruptive in public.  Marijuana actually minimizes the yelling I do at my kids, and that alone is worth it, nevermind that it's far less intoxicating than alcohol and healthier than smoking tobacco. The plain and simple fact is it is still socially stigmatized, and that's why it's illegal.  It also probably has something to to with the fact that there's no manageable way to tax it because it's easy to grow.  In Massachusetts, you can't sell alcohol on Sundays because you're supposed to be in church, not down at the pub.  Just because a law is on the books doesn't make it right, and it is every citizen's responsibility to be socially disobedient when laws are unjust.  As for me, I need to find a new dispensary now.

Here! Here! Well said! I'm a patient of both Green Joy in Woodland Hills, and the now delivery only Medithrive in SF. I'm just upset that my two favorite, and only collectives I belong to, are now closed or harder to obtain medication from. Boo to you Ms. Green, for your uninformed opinion.

the STATE needs to have some kind of seasonal inspections for these dispensaries and test ALL comercially grown cannabis. none of that "i got a SOG-operation with other patients that learned to grow from youtube" bullcrap. when the state decides to grow balls, operate accordingly, and provide strict safe access, then us medical patients will have nothing to worry about as far as the state is concerned.

Lol, if it wasn't so damn scary. Reefer Madness strikes again. Innocence? Their innocence was taken away the first time they watched TV. Their innocence was taken away the second time when they entered school and "suspect" teachers with agendas began to brainwash them. The third time when they interacted with other school children from different backgrounds. Should I continue, or am I innocently being naive by stating reality instaed of fantasy?
