Three Horses Die in Stable Fire in Unincorporated South L.A.

Categories: Fires

Three horses and one goat died in a stable fire in the unincorporated Athens area of South Los Angeles last night, according to the L.A. Fire Department.

What were horse stables doing in such an urban area (right around the corner from the Rio Gentlemen's Club)? It's not clear. We found a Google Maps photo (after the jump) of some dilapidated looking buildings in the neighborhood: Looks like a place for city hillbillies.

Anyway, the blaze was reported ...

... at 11:12 p.m. Sunday at a trio of horse stables in the 13100 block of Athens Way, according to the LAFD.

Twenty minutes later 39 L.A. city firefighters and additional county crews had the blaze out, the LAFD reported.

But not before three horses and a goat perished, according to Brian Humphrey of the LAFD.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.

After the flames were out authorities determined that the fire happened in county turf just across the line from the city of L.A., Humphrey said.
