Anaheim Erupts: Anti-Police Demonstrators Riot

Chris Vasquez, apparently hit with a police projectile, is quoted as saying, 'They cant do this to us, we should be able to tell them how we feel.'
After the 20th anniversary of the L.A. riots this spring, many Angelenos looked back and marveled at how things have changed for the better and how much farther away from that precipice of chaos we've traveled.

Well, in Orange County, the sense that police are an occupying force in a minority community that sometimes feels oppressed by a mostly white local government has come to a head this week.

What started as clashes, rubber bullets and snarling dogs unleashed on families turned into a full-on riot last night:

After two officer-involved shootings -- one that a family member says involved shooting a man in the back -- Anaheim's mostly working-class, Latino residents took to the streets Tuesday.

(Video purports to show that the first officer-involved shooting involved a man who was already handcuffed).

Trash cans were burned, rocks were thrown, and people tried to get into City Hall unsuccessfully.

The unrest even appeared to get the attention of hacker group Anonymous, which posted a YouTube video and stated:

The world needs to know ANAHEIM before mainstream and government silences it.

According to our City News Service feed, there were two arrests. Cops from all across the O.C., including sheriff's deputies, had to lend a hand as the county's biggest city couldn't handle the uprising on its own.

News video depicted cops from otherwise sedate, ultra-suburban O.C. police forces taking on rare riot duty.

Windows were reportedly smashed, at least one building, described as a construction site, was burned, and Fox 11 News suggested that protesters were trying to take over a nearby gas station in order get the fuel to set more objects ablaze.

Late into the night the clashes continued, and police remained on tactical alert. "Pepper spray balls" seemed to be the weapon of choice for cops seeking to disperse crowds near City Hall.

Perhaps the most bizarre moment, notes OC Weekly editor-in-chief Gustavo Arellano, was when, 5 minutes from the hottest urban unrest in America, Disneyland set off its nightly fireworks.

Can you say surreal?

Lets get this straight people gangs are as American as apple pie. You guys act like this is some kind of foreign terrorist al caida or something. Gang are a result of marginalization. Just like the jews, irish and italians did earlier. Maybe if we blame the brown people for doing something about being the underdog than we can feel better about ourselves, yay!

The police need to shoot more young white boys. How else can we be sure Aurora will never happen again! We need a new police racial profiling policy. Stop all creepy loner white boys.

Hi there. FIRST off thank you la weekly for giving us a needed perspective. Many people are following these events and what are we to do read the latimes which is never in the interest of the people, it doesnt serve their purpose. And yes I say the people because we are all in this together, this great experiment, this "democracy". Well guess what, those in power would like to take every right, that we have worked so long and hard far, away as quickly as possible. And WE are not gonna let that happen. SECOND: To all the self proclaimed "white" people, there is no such thing. No you didn't come from the Caucus mountains nor did your ancestors unless your Armenian, Georgian, or Russian. You are only "white" because you get a privilege to be light skinned in this country. FOR REAL! I am mixed heritage Irish and Mexican and yes I can kick your ass but besides the point I grew up in the area of LA policed by the RAMPART division. I was constantly threatened and harassed by the boyz in blue (AND TO BE CLEAR THEY ARE THE BIGGEST GANG IN THE CITY) . I would be randomly and illegally stopped because I was young and brown and for no other reason. Ive been toled by them I almost blew your brains out and they also told friends of mine I wish I couldve shot you etc. See WHITE people dont have to worry about this sort of deal so they cant even imagine what young brown men face on a daily basis. You guys are not harassed for being white although after AURORA I want to racial profile all loner white guys (you are so creepy and scare me now). So to all the white people please open your eyes and why not try to have some Mexican friends from the hood and youll see we really are nice guys just sometimes we are on the defensive for a lot of bullshit we get. Thanks weekly for keeping it real and FTPs ya know!

@dmvrenewal Hey pendejo (I learned that word from my beaner friends in college) the AnaCRIME cops appreciate all the overtime your homies are providing them with. I am sure they can use the extra money for a new gun to carry around next time one of you gets out of hand.

@dmvrenewal Keep up the riots! A lot of people are going to be busy cleaning up after you guys. And the people who live in Anaheim will pay for all the damages.  Next time you pay taxes that money is going to the city.  BABOSOS!!

Seems the LA Weekly and OC Weekly believes that gang members should be allowed to shoot at police without consequence.

@obongobabbahlewee Not true. One of the OIS cases, by the way, involved an unarmed man.

IMO, for the record, if someone shoots at a cop, by all means, get him.
