Marijuana Dispensary Ban in Los Angeles Scheduled For City Council Vote TODAY

Today the L.A. City Council is scheduled to bust a long-awaited move: To ban marijuana dispensaries or not to ban them? That is the question.

Few on the council, however, seem to be saying 'tis nobler to let pot shops operate in the city. The arguments so far have been over the details of how strong this banishment should be.

Up for consideration is an ordinance by Councilman Jose Huizar and friends:

Though Huizar calls it a "gentle ban," the ordinance would outlaw all the storefronts in town and allow only collectives of three or more people to grow and share weed behind closed doors.

That would be consistent with the City Attorney's interpretation of state collective law (SB 420), which it has said only allows for the nonprofit distribution of weed among the seriously ill. These 500 or so cannabis retailers we have in L.A. were never envisioned by state lawmakers, the argument goes.

However, the main author of SB 420, ex-state Sen. John Vasconcellos, told us that lawmakers in fact did want it to be okay to sell pot to medical patients.

Confused?

Just wait. There are also several legal challenges to pot shop bans in California winding their way up the state Supreme Court; they could throw the City Council's vote into question.

Already, pot advocates say, a recent California 2nd District Court of Appeal ruling means that cities can't ban pot shops like this.

Meanwhile, some neighborhood leaders are really tired of dispensaries in their areas. The stores attract crime, they say.

Huizar has certainly been the target of folks in Eagle Rock who say rogue dispensaries pop up like drug dealers in the hood. He used to be a pot shop supporter.

Maria Fisk of Granada Hills wrote this to the council Monday:

... What the $1.3 billion medical marijuana industry has become in cities and neighborhoods throughout the state is a means for unscrupulous operators and recreational users to game the system for profit and illicit use of a federally banned substance.

Medical pot backers argue that California voters granted sick people the right to access marijuana just like any other medicine. If this passes, the most-vulnerable among us, the old and ill won't be able to get their supplies, they argue.

What this really all means, ultimately, is that even though the council is headed for a ban, don't expect to see closed doors just yet. There will be plenty of lawyers involved. And legal challenges.

I have cancer and have been going through treatment for about 2 and a half years now and well cannabis has helped me more than all the pills doctors have told me to take for nausea its pretty sad that this is happening the government can be so stubborn sometimes there are dozens of people like me who have depended on cannabis to help them with their illnesses and they decide to just shut all of them down that's just not right it's pretty ironic how tobacco can be legal and Its been proven to cause cancer and cannabis is illegal and I helps cancer patients.....enough said

People just need to stand up and say fuck off to the government. I MEAN COME ON!!! What are ya, YELLA?!?!? Oh the government says we need to do this or that, so I guess I need to do it.... FUCK THAT! I don't smoke pot, never liked the stuff but I believe it should be 100% legal. If everyone got some balls all at once and said go take a hike mother fuckers to the gov, then we'd have Mary J cigs in the 7-11. WAKE UP!

Putting pot back to the illegal underground makes no sense at all. The city council members were obviously paid off by the drug cartels.

Smoking is NOT the only way to use cannabis...burning plant material is carcinogenic. If you eat or vaporize this is a non-issue.

They need to vote no on that ban. Our city has bigger problems to worry about. Actually, dispensaries aren't even a problem. There is no ligitimate reason to ban them.

Hey @Victor Vasquez - Marijuana is not addictive and much much safer than liquor or cigarettes.

Here's a free online documentary on the history of MJ in the USA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw-hBb_dm1Y

Learn how it's been LEGAL and why it became ILLEGAL, and why it's LEGAL again.

Also, for people commenting about "CRIME", how about you go after CIGARETTE COMPANIES since they put ARSENIC and other POISONS into their products. Also, have a look at the ground when you walk around the city... people who smoke LEGAL CIGARETTES and EAT FAST FOOD liter much more than pot smokers. How do I know? Because I'm a "hooligan" MJ eater who picks up those citizens trash because they are too apathetic to.

SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE :)

Does anybody else find it funny that people want to essentially tax and jail people for a GROWING a PLANT?

Finally. Nothing sadder than seeing all these bud-head smoking their life away. Take some control over the drug & get it to the hands of the people that need it to have a better life. Drug addicts have other options like cigarettes & booze to keep them satisfied.

As long as they vote to close the shops is all we want.

Bring on the lawsuits as they will be ill fated no doubt.

Councilman KoretzPromotes Potentially Sickening And Deadly Habit

With his motion in the upcoming vote before the Los Angeles City Council, Councilman Paul Koretz, is asking 100 marijuana dispensaries be left open because closing them all, in his words, “would be heartless.” In 1999, during his tenure on the West Hollywood City Council, Councilman Koretz took great pride in taking down the sign of the Marlboro Man on Sunset Boulevard, saying the sign “personifies the glamorizing of a deadly habit”, (Los Angeles Times, 1999). As the second largest city in the United States, Los Angeles should join the more than 200 cities who have implemented bans on unsightly pot shops and stop this potentially sickening, deadly habit!

It is a well-documented fact that the majority of marijuana abusers smoke the intoxicating substance and that Los Angeles has plenty of them.  In 2010, the Los Angeles Times reported on a study released by the Society of Addiction Medicine, citing that marijuana smoke, over time, causes pre-cancerous conditions in the lungs and esophagus, similar to cigarette smoke. In 2010, marijuana smoke was also included as a Proposition 65 health hazard to cause cancer.

Los Angeles City Council Members should take the responsible approach and support Councilman Jose Huizar’s motion, banning all storefront dispensaries in the City of Los Angeles and Councilman Parks and Councilwoman Perry’s motion, phasing out the existing L.A. ordinance. The council should dismiss the Koretz motion, as it promotes smoking, drug abuse, crime and sends the wrong message to our youth.

@alex695 nipitinthebudusa.org is a phony site conducted by Alex Datig (alex695) She is a reformed prostitute drug addict. She made her money by snitching on her pimp and now works for politicians and writes books to make herself seem acceptable. When you see ilk and false information it is usually for personal gain, which is the case here. She has worked for our favorite arsehole Steve Cooley. Look whos calling the kettle black. Dont forget AMA (largest group of physicians in US) urged government to reclassify marijuana because it is healthy and stops cancer. Who are you going to believe, a prostitute or the AMA?

"recreational users to game the system"?  We have been getting screwed by this ridiculous prohibition for 75 years now and we are supposed to feel guilty when some of our rights are restored?  And why was marijuana made illegal in the first place?  Certainly it was not because marijuana causes overdose deaths and violence (that's booze).  What makes Maria Fisk think that people wouldn't just buy weed from the Mexican cartels if the dispensaries were all shut down?  Some people just don't understand that prohibition does not reduce supply or demand.
