Claire Rose: Friends Say Santa Monica Woman Was Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver on Her Birthday

In Santa Monica's third serious hit-and-run in as many weeks, a 30-year-old woman was killed by the driver of a dark Toyota sedan just after midnight on Monday morning.

Friends on Facebook and Twitter identify the victim as Santa Monica resident Claire Rose. They say she was celebrating her birthday at the time she was killed. "Rest in peace Claire Rose," writes Jasmine Vo. "You've always lit up the room when you walked in."

Another friend asked for help from witnesses on Reddit:

"An amazing girl was killed at about 1/2am in a hit and run on Wilshire and 22nd. We need witnesses. If you saw or hear anything, please get in touch. Thank you."

Santa Monica police tell City News Service that the victim was walking north on 21st street, crossing Wilshire Boulevard in a designated crosswalk, when she was hit around 12:15 a.m.

But instead of stopping to help, the Toyota driver kept zooming west on Wilshire. From there, cops have gathered that the vehicle turned right on 15th Street and right on California before disappearing into the night.

On the Reddit post, which has racked up 50 comments, a user called "thefooz" blames poor lighting and a shortage of stoplights for the frequent pedestrian deaths in northeast Santa Monica:

"Have you ever driven on wilshire in santa monica? It's like russian roulette for pedestrians. Half of the streets don't have lights for their crosswalks, so pedestrians have to cross halfway, stand next to a 5 foot tall bush and hope that cross-traffic can see them and will stop. It's literally the least pedestrian friendly street I've ever seen."

The Santa Monica Police Department is overloaded in hit-and-run investigations right now. On June 23, comic-book legend Roger Slifer was killed nearly killed while crossing the street at 4th and Colorado. And just last week, a 30-year-old cyclist from Venice died when she was thrown from her bicycle along the PCH. When we spoke with Sergeant Phillbo Rubish regarding those investigations -- both unsolved -- he sounded desperate.

"We're still trying to identify the vehicle and get a plate" in the Slifer hit-and-run, he said. "We don't have any witnesses that can give us specifics. We're still hoping somebody will come forward."

Anyone with any information regarding the most recent crime is urged to call Sergeant Rubish at (310) 458-8950.

No matter how much you look back and forth, pay attention to your surroundings, you *as a fleshy human being* will never be any match for some asshole wielding a 4000lb weapon at a high rate of speed coming right at you out of the blue. You can run, duck, jump, scream --- none of it matters when it's you vs a car with a driver that couldn't give a shit about anyone but themself.

As a pedestrian, a cyclist, and also a driver, please please please don't cross the street assuming that drivers will see you, or will stop. I have no idea of the circumstances of this accident beyond what is reported, but I see far too many people who just step out without even looking. Of course they have the right of way, but what good does being right do when you're dead or injured?

actually, I hit someone once. An illegal mexican. She couldn't sue bc she was illegal but for the same reason she got free health care at the hospital. her boss (slave owners basically) said she hurt her hip bad but would be ok to walk in a few days. It was an accident. I called 911 soon as I hit her but seriously, I never saw her till the last second because she was standing behind a telephone pole, and my vision was blocked because the bar btwn the front windshield and the side window. Anyway, she saw the walk, and I saw the green light at the same time. we both were in a hurry to go. she didn't look well. i didn't look well. I slamed on brakes but it was too late.

I respect your response. Claire sounds like an amazing spirit. my condolences for her family and friends. I regret sticking up for a db. He nor I knew her. We are random bloggers. I do promote conversation on this subject because when ppl lose their life their is no proper vengeance. for exaample, look at all the ppl who died n the wars following 911 as a result of 9/11. I think ppl are still dying for that. The authorities never deliver perfect justice. I hate cops. You are right. we need more crosswalk lights, that's all. but justice is impossible. not for Claire.

I was hit by a car on Wilshire & Wellesley in May in the crosswalk, as well, someone needs to address the lack of stoplights immediately.

this is a GREAT idea actually. It should also read if people typically break the speed limit.

yes. because I'm not a selfish A*hole. Fact is? People that kill people in crosswalks RARELY ever get even a ticket. So you can rest easy b*tch.

Don't quit your day job.  That is by far the shittiest idea that could possible come out of this discussion.  The last thing we need are a bunch of community college retarded cops to have access to our personal property.  You fucking moron.  "Gonzalez".

Hit and runs are WAY too common.  Says a lot about our shitty society.  Everybody is out for themselves.  Zero personal responsibility.  This fucking country is on a crash course for failure.

I cycle alot for pleasure, and I'm tired of those who say that cyclists don't follow  traffic lows or not enough of them. Its true that not all cyclists follow traffic laws, but it's also true that thousands of car drivers all across L.A. County violate traffic laws every single day. If this were not the case, then traffic motor officers would out of their jobs. Most car drivers donn't make a complete stop at stop signs, which is illegal, most cars violate the speed limit on the 405,5,10,101,215,605,118, and on and on. I see dozens of car drivers on  their cell phones, dozens of drivers who fail to use their turn signals. I mean, get real. cyclists are the victim even if they violate the law, because whgen its bicycle versus car, the car wins. If a cyclists blows a stop sign, it's creates a safety hazard, but if a 4000 pound car blows a stop sign, thats exponentially more dagerous obviously. Bottom line, if you think car drivers follow traffic laws, then pay a visit to any L.A> traffic court. Trust me... if you grab a lawn chair and watch traffic on any big L.A. street,  you will see at least 15 cars violating traffic laws every minute, literally!

Why does it have to be sad on her birthday-it should be sad on any day...

A terrible tragedy but the last thing Wilshire blvd needs is more stop lights.

That is so sad :/ I hope justice comes to this situation, even though it won't bring her back. Her boyfriend was actor Dante Basco.

So sad this young woman lost her life. The ped crossings without lights are unsafe and it is just  your chance on which drivers will stop. Also beware of people turning right and left when there are pedestrians crossing. Santa Monica needs to get some traffic cops out there aggressively ticketing offenders.

Please don't attempt to turn this in to something so trivial. It is apparent that Julie chose her words quite carefully. We do not know if it was a man or a woman. What we do know is that is was a spineless coward excuse for a human being.

I concur with Diana.  I saw Claire get hit by this car right in front of me. It was the most horrific thing I have ever experienced in my entire life. The car was driving double the speed limit, and Claire was in the right, crossing legally on the crosswalk. At how fast this 4000 pound piece of machinery was traveling, Claire didn't stand a chance. The car to not even brake or slow down, nothing, and she was viciously taken from this world on her 30th birthday.

Spread the word, the more information gets out about this, the better chances somebody will come forward, or the monster that did this will no longer be able to live with the guilt, and turn themselves in.

RIP Claire. I didn't know you, but I know you brought a light to this world like none other.

Your comment might be valid if the driver had bothered to fucking stop after he ran her down. How many people do you know who know that they are "not to blame" that could do something like that? Cowards. If you don't know what you're talking about then please educate yourself ahead of time.

So sad......... I was in a hit-and-run a few years ago, too... Luckily, my friend and I are fine now, but the driver was never found...

Here is the issue...SoCal has for the last 60 years invested in streets designed for cars. There needs to be better foot, bike friendly focus. People when behind the wheel of a car don't pay attention all they are fixated on is how fast they can get their destination. This month alone SoCal has seen several hit and run fatalities. A meeting is being held in SaMo on Wed to address The Expo line and at risk is the bike train ped design.

I believe the reason this photo was used was that it was her FB profile photo and the only one available at the moment. Since I have mutual friends with Claire (did not know her personally), I am able to see her wall so I saved two of her nicer profile images and sent them to the author of this article about five minutes ago.

for more than a decade, as far as I remember, Sta. Monica is associated with vehicular deaths. People have died in bos stops by dozens, or hit by cars, cyclist died or ended in wheelchairs for the rest of their life, children smashed, woman an men died unnecessary because the city is plagged by numerous bars that sell alcoholic beverages without any control as longer their customers are willing to pay for the elixir of death and corruption. And because none of the deaths are city council members associated, we should expect more of these tragic deaths that will leave its tragic toll on many families; destroyed, sinking in dispair and missery, staggering our already damaged and devastated economy. City of Sta. Monica need a better understanding of the control that their authories are doing to help relieve such attrocities and stop these massive and horrible tragic death. They need urgent changes on a system that does not work according to these statistics.

I read it. There is no reason for Simone Wilson, writer of article, to use this photo. Insulting.

Why would you use a photo where she was "wearing" a mustache? How insensitive.

Maybe cuz it was her last, enjoying her birthday. Seems some didnt read the story. She didnt walk into the street ' she was crossing Wilshire Boulevard in a designated crosswalk'

This is sad but have the way pedestrains just walk into the street like they have built in bumpers is a reason why so many of these incidents happen. Get ya asses out the street.

Ben Reiss

While this is a tragedy and hit-and-run crimes are unacceptable in every way, this should also serve as a warning to pedestrians in Los Angeles who think they can walk into traffic and be invincible! Use stoplights, and if there are none, watch out for cars!
