Update: "R.I.P. Dennis Tillet, Young Morehouse Grad Killed 'Just Trying to Enjoy the Fourth of July'."

Update: Morehouse College, one of about 100 "historically black colleges and universities" around the country, confirms that Tillet was a graduate. Read the college's full statement below. (This article has been edited to eliminate profanity at the request of the victim's close friends.)

A shooting in South L.A.'s Hyde Park neighborhood last night killed one young man and injured two others, police tell City News Service.

The shooter reportedly fired indiscriminately into a group of people celebrating the Fourth of July around 10:30 p.m. -- taking the life of 25-year-old Dennis Herbert Tillet.

All throughout the morning, there has been an outpouring of love for Tillet on Twitter, as well as anger over who would do this to him.

"R.I.P @dennthemen I was so blessed to call you a friend!!!"
A few hours after he was declared dead at a hospital, L.A. model Honey Gomez wrote: "We suppose to be celebrating independence day, and this happens. Im over this holiday." And she later Tweeted to Tillet directly: "i love youu soo much. Im sorry my angel im sorry. We had so much fun with you tonight."

A user named Brakeisha, who says she is the victim's sister (perhaps not literally), writes that the drive-by shooters are "cowards" who didn't earn any "stripes" by killing a sweet guy like Tillet.

According to the LAPD's Southwest Station, the shooting occurred at 48th Street and 2nd Avenue.

As of early this morning, City News was reporting that a motive for the attack had not been determined. We've contacted the LAPD for updates on the investigation.

Tillet's friends say on Twitter that he was Beyonce's No. 1 fan and a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He may have also been an aspiring model.

"Dennis aint do [nothing] to anybody, but make you fall in love w| him and that smile," wrote Brakeisha early this morning. "Swear he should've been the face for colgate."

Did you know the victim, or witness the tragic Hyde Park shooting last night? Please share below.

Update: Darnell Holcomb, president of the Greater Los Angeles Morehouse Alumni Association, wrote us an email last night, thanking us "for bringing attention to the tragic events surrounding our Morehouse brother's death." He provided us with this statement from the college:

"By all accounts, Dennis was an endearing young man. Never confrontational, always helpful, and a source of positive energy on campus and in the classroom is the motif when hearing about Dennis from his peers. There has been a heartfelt outcry of sadness / mourning for Dennis and his family from across the country. We in the Greater Los Angeles Morehouse Alumni Association, share the shock that such a kind spirit would be taken from us in a violent and unnecessary manner. We extend our sincerest condolences to Dennis' family and friends and expect that this incident will be investigated with the full resources local law enforcement has at their disposal."

UP NEXT: Tillet's friends and family remember him as "a sweet and amazing person" who "brought a smile to your face no matter how you felt."

I just learned about death of Dennis and I am sad for the way he was taken away at such a young age. This promising young man had a bright furture in front of him, he and his family are truly people of GOD and it showed everytime you came across any of them. I watched this young man grow up in church, sunday school, choir ,a college student and then a young man returning back to his roots. My condolence goes out to his family, my church family (Ward AME) and the many people that came in contact with this wonderful soul. R.I.P. Dennis

RIP Dennis, This Binky Lia's auntie. I have only found funny memories of you. I remember when the two of you were learning how to drive. I vowed to never ride with either of you until you had more time behind the wheel. Funny times. I love you and will miss you little brother.

I couldn't be more devastated about the senseless killing of my dear Dennis. I knew him as a customer at Enterprise Car Rental and loved him much just because he was that special. I adore the staff there. They are more like family to me when I go there, which is often, and Dennis was always very kind, sweet and helpful to me. We shared laughs and he treated me more as a friend than a customer. When I heard about this yesterday I just broke down and cried and I went directly over to Enterprise because I knew the staff would be utterly devastated and I wanted to share my grief with them. I was just there the day before, right before they closed and told him and everyone to have a fun 4th of July and that I'd see them on thurs to pick up my next rental, of which he made the reservation for me. I still have his message on my voicemail that he left for me just this past monday about some rental details and his sweet little laugh is in it. I went today to return a car and as soon as I got home I burst out crying thinking about how he will not be with us anymore and all the life he had ahead of him that is no more. I cannot get his face and voice out of my minds eye...I can clearly see and hear him now.  My prayers and thoughts are with his family and many friends and collegues ~ May you Rest in Peace dear Dennis, Alice

DDennis story needs to he told so that other young people can benefit from his sense of purpose, determination, and forgiving spirit. He exuded Tue Christianity he professed and his life was a prayern The Ward AME Church family is grateful to God to have had Dennis amongst us for what seems like too short a time but know that Gods wisdom is above questioning and now falls on us to make sure Dennis ' life and legacy are widely shared Jackie Dupont-Walker

I barely knew Dennis, but every time I walked into Enterprise Rental Car (where he worked), he greeted me with his amazing smile and great attitude no matter what his mood or how busy he was.  He was always positive and eager to please.  I doubt he knew how much I appreciated that or how much of an impression he likely made on so many customers, but it taught me how important simply being kind to others really is.  I found out about his death this morning and have been thinking about him all day.  Thoughts and prayers to his friends and family.

I didn't know this young man, but I felt compelled to comment on this shoddy piece of writing. Someone lost their life and the best you can do is snatch a facebook photo and some tweets to describe the crime and his life? The victim deserves better and his family deserves better. Dennis, I hope you are at peace, and I sincerely hope that a responsible publication will properly honor your memory.

Such a tragedy that my friend Dennis lost his life. He was an intelligent ambitious young man. I've just heard of his death and am in shock right now. This is senseless! Dennis, your smile and your cheerful attitude will always be remembered!
