A whopping number of DUI arrests for the 4th of July holiday week were racked up in L.A. County this year.

Last year the number was 836, and boy did we top that. The numbers can't be compared, however, because last year's numbers span a 5-day "holiday weekend" while this year saw a midweek 4th that meant two weekends' worth of drunk patrols and DUI checkpoints across L.A. (from July 29 through July 8). In fact, there were ...

... 21 checkpoints, 58 "saturation patrols," a maximum enforcement period for the CHP, and regular traffic stops by the LAPD and other agencies during this 4th of July party week.

They resulted in 1,188 drunk- or drugged-driving arrests, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

And it ain't over yet.

The coordinated, ongoing L.A. County campaign to stop drunktards on the road, called "Avoid the 100" for the number of law enforcement agencies participating, will be back, according to a sheriff's statement:

Law enforcement officials will be conducting more Avoid Anti-DUI efforts throughout the county and region in partnership with the Nationwide 18 day campaign in August ending Labor Day weekend.

Stay safe.
