One more checkpoint added at the bottom.

You would think that the cops would give you a break after arresting 1,118 drivers for alleged DUI during 4th of July festivities in L.A. County this year.

Nope.

Not only are they not letting up, but the LAPD will be shooting fish in a barrel with one checkpoint this weekend:

Yep. One of the checkpoints will be right in the heart of Koreatown. Ethnic stereotypes aside, there are some drunk fools in Koreatown. (And note here, before you accuse us of being an asshole, which we are, that a majority of residents in K-Town are Latino).

That lovely traffic stopper happens tonight on Vermont Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. (which will totally interrupt your karaoke after-hours route -- use Normandie).

Tomorrow (Saturday) there will be another checkpoint on Figueroa Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard in the Exposition Park area from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Where's the checkpoint in Brentwood, Pacific Palisades or Hancock Park? Doesn't the LAPD ever target white people with these things, you ask? The answer is no.

But note that the MLK checkpoint, above, is pretty damn close to USC. So watch your backs, Trojans.

[Added at 4:48 p.m.]:

There's one more checkpoint, and it happens tonight: It's at Nordhoff Street and Woodley Avenue in North Hills from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Are there any statistics on these check points as far as the ratio of drunk people to sober people on the road during these drunk checks? Are those statistics being used to encourage a better public transit system? A subway that stays open until after 2am 7 days a week? (awesome btw, that it's going to be open 'til 2am on weekends). Viable alternatives need to be available to actually decrease the number of drunk drivers on the street - a few publicized drunk points isn't going to be the big answer.

Like the way you keep it real. But just remember Dennis never let's facts get in the way of his banter, at least not to date. I still read him though. Beats the LA Times or Patch, but not by much. We need a new paper.

The Supreme Court ruled LE must give public notice that a DUI checkpoint is going to occur so as to not violate the constitutional rights of citizens; so, LAPD is just following the ruling so the "evidence" gathered during their "lawful detention," resulting in a "probable cause search" resulting in an "legitimate arrest" doesn't get suppressed, and result in the case getting thrown out of court on a technicality and wasting everyone's time and resources. The part about keeping driver's off the road is just PR icing on the cake, and the media's and the PD's way to keep making a living off of crime. And thanks again, Dennis.

Woodley and Nordoff is not exactly a non-white location. Nor is Ventura Blvd. in Studio City and Sherman Oaks, or Lankershim Blvd. at the No-Ho Metro line, or Washington and Lincoln near Marina Del Rey and Venice. These are all locations they have DUI checkpoints-- just to name a few. Personally, I like it when the Po Po lights Homie Holmes up in Pacoima with a Budweiser in his lap, a Doobie in his ear, and four hungry kids and a happy Pitbull in the backseat. Hey, but that's just me. Let's keep it real. DUI's are a dangerous practice which have no ethnic or racial boundries. White's peoples gets 'em too, ya'll. The abuse of alcohol and the privledge to operate a motor vehicle on a public highway profiles no one individual. Nor do the Wlack, white, Latino or asian Traffic Cops conducting the DUI checkpoint. They just want a bust. They don't particularly care what color your sorry drunk ass is. Far as I can see, anybody of any race or ethnicity can drive a car in LA, and anywhere they want. They can even turn around before the checkpoint if they aren't too loaded to see it. Imagine that! We all have the equal freedom to be stupid. You don't even need a license to drive in LA. Hey, it all be good, no biggie. Bottom line-- can't do the time; don't do the crime. Don't like the "Heat," don't slam 10 Fuzzy Nipples, or pound dem brandy & waters like dey ice tea-- if dats yer freaky thang! And the Supreme Court and the LAPD thank you Dennis for your civic mindedness.

FYI, I live close to MDR and they ALWAYS have a check pt in the same spot on Lincoln every time. I am a Caucasian and I was and two caucasians that I know were stopped there at the same check point at different times (to prove again, that they set this up often). We all weren't drinking so we were let go. I just went on the LAPD site and saw under "LAPD plans DUI patrols, checkpoints" exactly "-- from 7 p.m. July 6 to 3 a.m. July 7 in the Pacific patrol area at Lincoln Boulevard and Maxella Avenue" on there for a check point. I'm sure your argument is "it wasn't there last week"...am I right? The city pays a large amount of money to set up these spots. Do you think they'll choose an area with low traffic going through it? NO! They're going to choose high traffic areas such as major arteries towards a freeway. Lincoln at Maxella leads to the 90 fwy. The one in North Hills leads to the 405. The one on Figueroa Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard leads to the 110. Do you see it now?

Thanks for the tip though. Added the North Hills one to the story.

krmone: This is something we've gone over repeatedly over the years. But the LAPD, the CHP and Sheriff's Department and most other law enforcement agencies have argues that by publicizing checkpoints maybe people will decide not to drink and drive.

DRG: The LAPD didn't publicize the MDR checkpoint. I usually only write about the ones they send out release about. If it was, in fact, it Marina Del Rey proper, then it was a sheriff's checkpoint anyway, which would negate that part of your point. But, having written about these things for almost three years, I would say that immigrants' rights activists accusations that the LAPD seems to target minority neighborhoods for these checkpoints holds true. Now, you could argue that all of L.A. is a minority neighborhood, which would be somewhat valid, but, as I point out, there are, in fact, rarely checkpoints in those neighborhoods that are majority white, by my estimation of the LAPD's announcements. Furthermore, I belive La Opinion did an analysis that it said also proves this pattern (Google it). Finally, the LAPD itself has changed its impound policy in vis-a-vis undocumented drivers, this addressing the criticism, at least partially. Broken: The LAPD wants us to publicize these. Its argument is that, indeed, maybe people won't do it if they're aware that the cops are out there.
