Emanuel Pleitez, Goldman Alum, Faces Long Odds In Quest To Be Boy Mayor of Los Angeles

Emanuel Pleitez
A few weeks ago, Emanuel Pleitez called up Fernando Guerra -- a veteran political analyst -- and asked whether he should run for mayor. Pleitez is just 29, with a resume that includes Stanford and Goldman Sachs. He has no shortage of ambition, but Guerra told him to hold off.

"I don't think he stands a chance," Guerra says. "He has no name recognition, no money, no endorsements, no particular issue, no base. So it's like, no chance."

Pleitez could not be discouraged. Last week, he announced his candidacy, making him the only Latino in the race to succeed Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

"A lot of folks are saying, 'This is a long-shot candidate,'" Pleitez says. "We're going to run a very unconventional campaign. We're going to raise enough money to be competitive."

Pleitez grew up in El Sereno, the child of a single mom. After college, he worked briefly as an aide to Villaraigosa before winding up as an equities trader at Goldman Sachs. He left that behind in 2009 to launch a long-shot bid for an open Congressional seat in East L.A.

He rallied a bunch of college friends, and did well enough that Gil Cedillo was forced to attack him, sending a mailer (below) that ripped him for posting some party photos on his Facebook page. Judy Chu won. Pleitez finished third, and may well have cost Cedillo the election by splitting the Latino vote.

After that, he bolstered his resume with a stint in the Treasury Department, where he served as a special assistant to former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker. He argues that that experience gave him "an understanding of economic policy at the highest level," which he can apply to L.A.'s lackluster economy.

"It's all about jobs," Pleitez says. "The new mayor needs a more integrated focus on how to increase innovation."

Pleitez was motivated to run because no other Latino has entered the race. If he gets on the ballot, he could siphon votes from Councilman Eric Garcetti -- who figures to do well in the Latino community.

But Guerra argues that Latinos will stick with Garcetti, who represents a Latino district and can claim Latino heritage on his father's side.

"I don't think Eric Garcetti is worried about him running," Guerra says. "He should run for council or something like that. He's potentially a great candidate. But now, if he tries to do that later, he's gonna be a two-time loser. I'm boggled."

Rosascott281: thanks for the support!Mikedelano: I want to let you know that the Pleitez Campaign intends on running a clean, transparent campaign. Whenever we (the early recruited staffers) comment on an article, we'll let you know it's us. (Like right now. It's us!)As to the rest of your comment, you're right. Growing up in El Sereno doesn't itself relate to how he'll handle city politics. That experience is only relevant in that Emanuel truly understands this city, its people, and what it's like growing up and attending school in underrepresented area of Los Angeles. It will be his leadership skills, his private sector experience, and his freedom from special interest groups that will allow him to fix the important issues you mentioned. If you'd like to go a little more into detail on his policies, you can check out the campaign website here: http://www.pleitezforla.com/Or I invite you to email me at rhianon@pleitezforla.org, and we can talk about some of your concerns about Emanuel as a candidate.

Special interest groups? Well, he is tied to the Los Angeles political "Machine" i.e., Villaraigosa, and comes from the FMLN side of the Salvadoran family in Los Angeles. Plus, he would never show his Salvadoran colors until its election time, what a joke and a shame.

I see the early recruited staffers are working the blogs already..... LA Causa and LOFT ? !  Really!  East Los Angeles ?! Again Really!! (BTW Not part of LA) He grew up in El Sereno which I hate to say is technically NorthEast. How does any of this relate to city politics ? How is he going to fix the traffic situation , city infrastructure , urban blight , the epidemic graffiti problem, city budget, bring businesses back to LA, and not alienated the non-latinos citizens since that appears to be his primary platform.    A joke ! I am offended that he would pander his immaturity and inexperience to the latino population. FAIL.

If no other Latino has the courage enough to run for mayor of Los Angeles, Emanuel will and he’ll end with a victory.  As the youngest candidate running, Emanuel will bring the energy that LA needs. Sure, Emanuel has private sector experience which is great, but his resume reads far beyond “Stanford and Goldman Sachs.” People are concerned about how he will “run the city when he has been spending most of his life in the private sector where money flows.” He has also been involved with non-profits such as; LA CAUSA and LOFT which encourages and helps young Latinos to reach their full potential. He cares about education, creating more jobs, public safety, the economy and infrastructure. No other candidate running in this race knows what it is like to grow up in East Los Angeles. Emanuel knows EXACTLY the improvements the City of Los Angeles needs. He will run a campaign that LA has never seen before and he will make sure every neighborhood in Los Angeles knows that HE is running for mayor (because 2/3 of Angelenos don’t even know who the hell is running).  He truly cares about a neighborhood he can easily call home. For a neighborhood that gave him so much, he wants to give back to his community by making sure there are less high school drop-outs and more jobs. It doesn’t matter that councilmembers have a higher name ID. In fact, that only gives Emanuel better competition. Because Emanuel is so unique he will stand out against his competitors.  It’s not just going to be “an interesting race to follow,” but an exciting one as well.

A neighborhood, being El Sereno? Then he should run for City Council not Mayor. If I'm not mistaken he was planning on running for Assembly, but was too afraid to go against Jimmy Gomez, Arturo Chavez and Luis Lopez. On top of that after he was pushed out of this race he was considering running for CD 9. Really!! What a joke.

Should be an interesting race indeed. I tend to think we need someone who has vision and perspective on the city that most Angelenos share--finding jobs, educating their children, building their communities. Emanuel's always committed to that, and the other candidates remain silent on those issues. Emanuel's energy could be just what the city needs.

I should also mention that I interviewed with him once at one of the companies and projects he works at now in regards to a social media position. He's VERY corporate and believes in a fit for every single situation. That means he doesn't believe that people ought to do a little bit of everything, but just ONE thing at a time. If he so chooses to run for LA mayor this is a perspective he has to drop. There is no way he is going to be able to hire someone to do every little nitpicky thing that he wants to do. If he does he's going to run the city into oblivion. You cannot corporatize a city and politics, and I think Emmanuel might want to do that. He's in for a rude awakening, IMO.

How does a city, struggling with the turmoil of a bad budget, an education system that is in the doldrums and crime like none other need Emmanuel? Sure, he's got the chops -- Goldman, Obama, etc (which you can see on the LinkedIn account), but I am not so sure his professional experience truly allows him to relate to the everyman. Don't get me wrong, he has the experience growing up and the sociological chops, but what concerns me is how he will run the city when he has been spending most of his life in the private sector where money flows and where he's able to do just whatever he wants. This will be truly an interesting race to follow.

BTW I just added NASA Astrophysicist to my linkedIn account as well!!!! Pleitez is a Master of stretching the truth , Naming dropping Goldmans and Obama does not quantify experience . On that note who leaves Goldman with out building some considerable personal wealth of their own , as a supposed "Equities trader"? Who leaves the Obama administration of their own volition ? This is a padded resume with a far stretch of the truth. At a minimum a published prospectus or analysis on the web with regards to equities would suffice. You will be hard pressed to find his name in any finance articles that are not self serving with regards to local politics . As for his contributions to the Obama transistion team I am yet to find his name as a co-author to any published white papers or actionable reccoemndations .

GarSHADY has the Latino vote locked-up?...More Garbage from Gene ! So your argument is 2-fold: 1) You say Eric is popular in his council district...NOT true; he is hated there, which explains why a nobody with no $ ran against Eric in 2009 and got 30% of the vote against a warchest of special interest $$$ raised by Eric.  Eric's only becoming more unpopular with the new Hollywood Community plan he approved and high crime stats.  After Mini-Mayor, he's the most responsible in running this City into the ground over the last decade...DWP Union-backed former councilwoman Wendy Cruel and Best Buddy of Developers Jan Perry and Dennis the Slimeball Zine follow closely after Mini-Mayor and GarSHADY in responsiblity, since they have all been there together for the last decade in the council leadership, destroying our City for their personal political gain.  (I shouldn't forget INDICTED Richard AlarCON...I could go on and blame Paul "the Schmuck" Koretz and others...almost all of them are scum, but I'll leave it at that for this comment) 2) You say that he's got latino heritage on his father's side of the family...really grasping at straws there, Gene. Since you were so wrong about Carmen "the Clown" Trutanich being a shoo-in for DA (guy didn't even make the runoff) and you had an obvious thing against fiscal conservative Bernard Parks, aiding the DWP Union-backed candidate in his race with your writing, well, you'll be wrong yet again and maybe you'll learn to be a journalist and not a propagandist...we have too many of those at the Obama Times and the Daily Censored News (Valley Edition)...we don't need them at LA Weekly. Stop damaging your paper's journalistic integrity.  Remember, you work for LA Weekly, not the City Employee Unions.  Stop writing as if you're auditioning to be their PR Spokeshole.

There is actually a great choice, the best choice, and the only choice. Kevin James. He is the only qualified candidate, career wise, and is not a corrupt city hall insider.  he's making waves. he publishes all of his ideas you can check them out on the news section at kevinjamesformayor.com    Everyone should be voting for James and no one else, there is no other competitive option, and he has brilliant ideas that really can fix LA

Not that it should matter but speaking as a Chicano university student in East L.A. - Pleitez does not impress me. He has the background story, has the young appearance, has a decent grassroots base, and can mobilize voters with his outreach groups. HOWEVER, as aforementioned with Mikedelano - the guy has no significant creations, has not produced anything. And this may be the socialist/cynicist in me, but I don't trust anybody whose work includes work with Governm- uh I mean, Goldman Sachs.  That and the whole idea that Latina/os will vote for someone who is Latino is rather insulting, but the political reality that as far as racially polarized L.A. still is - he could win some votes. Other than that all the candidates suck. Jan Perry can't even keep a promise on a garden in South L.A., Greuhl and Garcetti' hands are already in Eli Broad's purse (not to mention Garcetti would displace his own mother if it meant "beautifying" the neighborhood for a vintage organic pet food store). The choice of "lesser of two evils" continues in the U.S.

This will be his second loss!!! Not sure what his strategy is ..... Mindless!!! He was not an equities trader, yes he did work at goldmans but he does not have a series license . His work at the treasury dept was almost specifically as an observers and was obtained due to significant contributions and back room favors . Resume is extremely padded and no significant contribution exist. He is just rolling the dice on his pipe dream.
