James Holmes Smoked Marijuana, Took Vicodin -- Reports

Categories: Crime

Holmes' adult sex site profile photo.
Suspected Aurora massacre shooter James Holmes took Vicodin before the attack and was also a marijuana smoker, according to reports posted over the weekend.

The 24-year-old from San Diego who was in L.A. as a summer camp counselor in 2008 took 100 mg of Vicodin about 2-and-a-half hours before Friday morning's attack at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises, reported the ABC news affiliate in Denver.

A report of his alleged weed smoking was attributed to the New York Post, but ...

... we couldn't find the story nowhere online. TMZ points to a piece that doesn't mention such toking, saying:

... A man who lived across the street from Holmes told the NY Post he used to "see him smoking weed behind the apartment." He told the paper, "Nobody ever really talked to him. He was alone a lot."

If true it could be bad news for medical cannabis advocates. Marijuana has a powerful, psychoactive component that, like legal, prescription drugs, has the potential to be abused.

Last year we reported that Tucson massacre suspect Jared Loughner was known to smoke pot and Salvia.

This is the most retarded article I've ever read. The author must smoke pot, since it makes you do dumb sh*t, right? ;)

WOW, his A-Hole author is tryig to point the finger at Marijuana, the safest most beneficial drug that can save the world of polution and PHARMA drugs that harm anyone who takes them, this wonderful GOD given plant that is a GOD MASTER plant with dozens of uses such as a fiber that can be made to be 8 times stronger than steel. The plant that can make SUPERIOR BIO DEISEL that's more powerful than Fossil fuel deisel, and that desn't pollute.

Someone's definitely paying this A-HOLE author of this article to spread PROPAGANDA, or PROPA-GONJA!!!

James had ts planned out for at least two months. he probably had to take that much vicodin to actually make himself go through with his SYCO fantasy, but the marjuana has nothing to do with his actions.

Wait. So the dots we are supposed to connect are that pot smoking is why the guy in Colorado shot a bunch of people? MOST people I know smoke pot from time to time. Many of them consider themselves conservative republicans, too. They live in McMansions, pay taxes and have children in private schools. I think this article is trying to paint some "manson family" portrait in order to demonize marijuana further. If you don't like to smoke weed, then don't. I can't stand alcohol, and drunks, so I guess we're even. Not only should it be legal, but I am starting to think it should be mandatory, since the author of the article clearly needs to chill-out.

Incredulous

He took 10X the normal amount of Vicodin, yet your pointing out the fact that he smoked weed?I dare anyone who says that his violent tendencies were attributed to marijuana to smoke one blunt and just see what happens. Your ass won't leave the house, let alone turn some rando-theater into a Grand Theft Auto knockoff.

What the hell is 100mg of vicodin? I believe it is a mix of hydrocodone and antcitemtophin I can't spell becasue I took two and smoked a blunt. But, I do know this article is BS. It prob was the 100mg of vicodin (lol) that made him crazy, but most likely the combination would put him to sleep, trust I know they go good hand in hand, don't wash it down with a beer,  man know you talking!!! :)

Also to everyone protesting against the weed, i am a smoker, yet i know that would could have caused him to start the shooting.

Before you all get up in arms at me saying it cures cancer and isnt bad at all blah blah blah I KNOW THIS. However, THC can exacerbate mental illnesses to those who a predisposed to it.

Although there is no evidence yet that the THC was the main cause of his outbreak, so both you and the article is in the wrong

@tommins  I appreciate your honesty, however I would urge anyone who is an advocate, even if only by the virtue of being a user, to please be as well informed as possible.

The fact is there is no link between cannabis use and mental illness.

I do think there is a confusion between "mental illness" and temporary psychotic episodes that can happen if you go from average to very high THC content cannabis. Another reason to legalize; KNOWN POTENCY, AND EFFECTS.

http://www.drugpolicy.org/facts/drug-facts/marijuana-facts

"Fact: Marijuana has not been shown to cause mental illness.

Some effects of marijuana ingestion may include feelings of panic, anxiety, and paranoia. Such experiences can be frightening, but the effects are temporary.

That said, none of this is to suggest that there may not be some correlation (but not causation) between marijuana use and certain psychiatric ailments. Marijuana use can correlate with mental illness for many reasons. People often turn to the alleviating effects of marijuana to treat symptoms of distress. One study performed in Germanyshowed that marijuana offsets certain cognitive declines in schizophrenic patients. Another study demonstrated that psychotic symptoms predict later use of marijuana, suggesting that people might turn to the plant for help rather than become ill after use.[4]"

@tommins  "Cannabis in it's natural form, is one of safest therapeutically active substances known. In Strict medical term, marijuana is safer than many foods we commonly consume." - by Judge Francis Young, DEA

The problem here was the Vicodin, booze, and whatever drugs he had been experimenting with via has college work. And the fact he had problems likely unrelated to any substance use/abuse.

tommins

First of all, well done on saying "like legal, prescription drugs, has the potential to be abused." showing you know that weed is not a be all end all bad drug.

But as you know this there was still no reason to post that weed was involved,

100mg of Vicodin is an utterly stupid statement. Vicodin is a mixture of acetaminophen(tylenol) and hydrocodone(opiate) in either a ratio of 500/5 (regular) or 750/7.5 (extra strength). There are other combinations of acetaminophen and hydrocodone in other pills, but they don't go by the trade name Vicodin. Either way, saying he took 100mg is nonsensical because if the writer means 100mg of hydrocodone, then the bastard would be too loaded to breathe let alone shoot people unless he has a seriously high tolerance. And if the writer meant 100mg acetaminophen, well, that's not much stronger than a kiss from mom.

YouAreWrong
YouAreWrong

@plenertz I agree the statement in the article is incorrect, but you are also very incorrect. 100mg of hydrocodone wont make you "too loaded to breath" infact it's very possible he took this much. 100mg of hydro codone would only be 10 10/326 pills. I've seen experience opiate users take tripple that amount without breathing problems or liver damage and they were still functional, but of course intoxicated.

plenertz
plenertz

@YouAreWrong  @plenertz I guess I just doubt this guy is an "experienced opiate user." For one, his pupils don't look contracted in any of his pictures. Also, his mouth is too expressive in my opinion to signify opiate use.

It seems to coincidental that his field of study was temporal illusions, changing reality.  I think that he was using himself for experimentation with psychotic meds to work on his thesis.  The chemicals flipped him out so that he can't distinguish between reality and illusion.  He lost the sense of reason in his brain because of the drugs he was doing for the past 6 years, trying to make a breakthrough in the neuroscience field.  He reallly believes that he is the Joker in Batman, trying to blow up (his apartment) Gotham City and kill as many people as possible.  He is not acting in court.  His mental state is caused by his research that went bad.  The University is being very quiet about his connection to them and what he was doing there.  They are afraid that they will be blamed for the murders because colleagues and professors may know that he was testing on himself and he lost his sense of reality.  Prior to this, he has no indication of any wrong doing. If this is the way it went down, tragic for everyone.

Cannabis Kills Cancer, and treats a whole lot more ... that`s what`s going on here. They know it. Big Pharma, Zombie Drug Laundering Banks, and the CIA are horrified.

Look for more "Cannabis Patsies" in the future.

They will stop at nothing because there is massive cash involved here. After all can`t have the dreaded "Killer Weed" curing disease as a plant we could grow in our own backyard .....

We also know he drank alcohol as one of the last people to recall having a conversation with him met him at a bar and talked sports.

We know he blasted loud techno music from his apartment at midnight as he was starting his shooting rampage.

We know he was interested in young women in their 20's.

OK so rumour is that this guy smoked marijuana too. Yeah, I know two people who have had psychotic breaks whilst using marijuana. One got out a knife as he thought everyone was trying to kill him, the second person was severely distraught and believed absolutely that she was going to die .. then later she believed she WAS dead and I couldn't convince her otherwise! Not everyone chills out on marijuana unfortunately :-/

Still.. it is a long way from proving that marijuana caused his behaviour. Just a very distant possibility IMHO. Also, the guy was stock piling weapons for ages. Surely at some point he would have come out of any drug induced state and said "holy *#$% what the hell is going on, better not take anymore of this stuff"

TJefferson
TJefferson

@zark While I`m certainly an advocate for cannabis, it is true that high potency stuff can cause TEMPORARY psychotic episodes. However the overwhelming scientific, and user experience, is that there is no permanent change to the brain, and most people just fall asleep and wake fine.

Even the prohibitionist alleged link to schizophrenia turns out to be bunk.

But, IMHO, this is just one more reason to legalize. No more guessing game about potency. People will know very precisely what strength, and type of high, with the cannabis they are getting.

As far as Holmes; he was on Vicodin, a very addictive, and certifiably dangerous narcotic. Couple that with the crap he may have been taking during his college work and the any consideration of cannabis having a role is nil.

@zark Not everyone chills out on antidepressants, either.  Remember the Columbine shootings?

"Licit psychotropic biological behavior modification medication and patently legal personality "mind altering" maintenance drugs prescribed by child and adolescent psychiatrists was scientifically, clinically, and forensically evident. Eric Harris was on a prescription drug called Luvox and Kip Kinkel tried Ritalin for a while as a child and then Prozac as am adolescent."

@kevin_hunt Spot on. Luvox is well known to cause violent behavior. As I recall some of the families of the victims were trying to sue the makers of the drug. Shooter Jared Loughner was on it.

The Netherlands had nearly 30 years of experience with quasi-legal marijuana usage in their society.  Holmes (a marijuana user) actions confirm what the Dutch gov't. already knows about pot:

high-potency marijuana use is closely linked with psychosis.

The Dutch recently re-classified high- potency marijuana as a hard drug right alongside heroin, crack and meth.  Marijuana with a THC level greater then 15% is now illegal in The Netherlands. Marijuana with THC levels FAR greater then 15% are sold everyday in medical marijuana dispensaries in both Colorado and California. Marijuana vendors often have their marijuana's THC content determined and is used in their advertising and sales literature. Medical marijuana with 20-30% THC levels are very common in dispensaries. Ultra-high potency concentrates (hash, hash oil, kief, ear wax) are also offered for sale by MMJ retailers. Yes, Holmes horrific actions will indeed cast an ugly pall over the marijuana advocates.  I'm hopeful for a re-evaluation of medical marijuana use to include the following:

-limits on THC levels

-primary care physician AND a "pot doc" must both sigh off on a MJ  recommendation.

-Medical MJ sales be conducted only in pharmacies by a licensed pharmacist

kevin_hunt
kevin_hunt topcommenter

@johnnyslamfire 30% THC? That's nothing.  Marinol is nearly 100% THC.

Why does the FDA classify Marinol as a safe and effective medication if it is "closely linked with psychosis"?  Where are the overdose deaths as with acetaminophen? I hope you are "hopeful of a re-evaluation" of OTC medications as well, since acetaminophen is the #1 cause of liver failure.

How about:

-limits on acetaminophen levels

-primary care physician AND a "acetaminophen doc" must both sigh off on acetaminophen  recommendation.

-acetaminophen sales be conducted only in pharmacies by a licensed pharmacist

Your plan to save us from ourselves sounds like a thinly veiled attempt at prohibition; a sort of "kinder, gentler, ban".

zark

@johnnyslamfire I just learned that the only drug found in the Miami cannibals system was marijuana.

I have seen one friend go psychotic whilst using marijuana, but they weren't violent and didn't act like they were possessed. Another guy at school pulled out a knife due to paranoia whilst on it but didn't hurt anyone.. Maybe it is safe for 99% of people but clearly not for everyone.

kevin_hunt
kevin_hunt topcommenter

@zark  Toxicologists can't test for all bath salt compounds since they keep changing.  Why would they spend $1000's to figure out exactly what he was on since the cops have all the evidence they need already to put him away?  The cannibal could have been on any sort of weird Chinese experimental powder.

Duncan20903
Duncan20903

Beter get busy collecting the signatures johnnyslamfire, you do understand that the only way to alter the Compassionate Use Act (Prop 215) is by way of another citizen generated ballot initiative, right?

Of course there's no need for anything but innuendo that Mr. Holmes actually was a cannabis user, or that it had anything to do with his actions. We know he used Vicodin, but just disregard that because some neighbor says he saw him smoking in his back yard. Just like it never mattered that Mr. Loughner didn't have any cannabis trace in his body at the time he committed his shooting.

Don't forget the almost 100% THC product called Marinol® that you prohibitionist types are always pushing as a "legal" alternative to medicinal cannabis. I know, I know, facts just aren't important to prohibitionists. You'd be without a case if you put any faith in facts.

Good luck gathering your signatures. You'll need it.

Hold up!  Weed?  Hell,  if you blame weed, then I counter with it was the beer he drank!  We need to ban ALCOHOL (which has caused more U.S. citizen deaths than ALL the U.S. involved wars<excluding the Civil War>.)   We are a society that pins blame on other people and things other than putting the blame on what is the cause: the individual.  ONE CAN NOT SEPARATE SELF FROM SELF'S ACTIONS.

This article raises the following questions:

1.  If he smoked weed, why does he look like he weighs around 130 pounds?

2.  If they fry him in the electric chair, does his hair return to its natural color?

3.  Is there a legal way to determine if the entire City of San Diego is vicariously liable for his crimes?
