L.A. Metro Trains to Run Until 2 a.m. on Weekends

Party time.
Haaaaaaallelujah. Metro's big announcement today is better than all its 2012 ribbon-cuttings combined:

The transportation authority's official blog reports (with three exclamation points!!!) that, beginning in late July, "all Metro Rail lines will run until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. That includes..."

"... the Red/Purple Line subway, the Blue Line, Expo Line, Green Line and Gold Line."

And one bus -- the Orange Line -- will now be running until 2:40 a.m. Here are all the specifics so far:

• Trains will run every 20 minutes between midnight and 2 a.m.

• The Orange Line will run until 2:40 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights in order to meet the last trains at the North Hollywood Red Line station. The Orange Line will also run every 20 minutes between midnight and 2:40 a.m.

• The plan at this moment is to begin late-night service on the weekend of July 27-28 but Metro is also working to determine if late night service is needed on the Silver Line, as well as working with Metrolink on the possibility of extending their service to connect with Metro's.

Metro will provide more details on scheduling later in the month and there will be a considerable p.r. push to let everyone know about the new service.

Currently, most lines shut down between about midnight and 1 a.m. (We're pretty sure today's announcement means that the last train leaves at 2 a.m., not arrives, but we've contacted Metro for confirmation.)

Now this is democracy! We don't care about no $100 billion bullet train to nowhere, nor the mayor's decades-off "Subway to the Sea" -- we just want to be hauled home wasted on a dirt-cheap boxcar with a makeshift stripper pole!

So from here on out, we'll just have to remember to leave the bar by around 1:45 a.m., and we're good. A commenter at the Metro blog puts it best:

"As a person who has spent hundreds of dollars in taxicab fare in order to get from Union Station to Pasadena after the last 11:53pm Gold Line train has left, this is a huge advancement. Now I won't have to leave the West Side at 10pm in order to get home in a timely manner. Huzzah!"

And in one fell swoop, the most transit-challenged city on Earth has earned itself more party cred than renowned subway havens like London and Paris. Best Friday ever.

She's just keeping it real...sorry that she doesn't meet with your propaganda standards.

Nice to see that Mini-Mayor, Zev, and their buddies have their priorities straight...Drunks and Rail (with token crumbs to bus service, so it isn't so obvious that they are continuing to manipulate ridership data for Rail vs. Buses), that's the ticket ! While cutting HALF of my Bus Service, including COMPLETELY ELIMINATING the (MTA) Beverly Blvd RAPID that ran from the Westside to City Hall and back (I just love stopping every two blocks all the way there), maintaining lousy Bus Service for Westside North-South lines, lousy service to and from Century City West of Cedars (except if you happen to be on Wilshire or SM Blvd), lousy Evening and Weekend Bus Service, and turning Carpool Lanes into toll lanes (Double Taxation, anybody?) AND completely eliminating the (LA City DOT) Hollywood/WeHo DASH line (gotta throw out a big thank you to Fake Liberal Eric GarSHADY for not lifting a finger to stop that one) and Half of the Fairfax DASH (Mini-Mayor tried to eliminate the whole thing, while not allowing any of the (annual) $50 Million of Measure R Local Return Funds (that the City of LA gets) to be used for their intended use, Neighborhood Circulators (aka DASH Buses), b/c he wants to spend every penny on Rail and the overly powerful tiny Bike Lobby, which returns the favor by supporting little-ridden but highly costly Rail and Overdevelopment)...THANX A Lot,  RAILheads ! Building Rail on the Backs of BusRiders and loving every minute of it !  Take your car to another photo-op, you lousy limousine liberals !

Ha ha. Well, my troll brain can't compete with that eloquent response. Perhaps now we can someday resolve this debate in the wee hours of the morning at the Hawthorne Boulevard station.

Yeah for transpo available after shows at Anson Ford, Hollywood Bowl, Gibson, etc . This is great news for live music lovers that hate paying for high parking fees .

Just getting the last train to 2 a.m. (2:20 a.m. for the Green and Orange Line) is a major change. You can take a 24 hour Owl Bus if you miss the train.

Nope because they go nowhere near where I live :(

I would if I still lived there, but I got the hell out of that corporate shithole and moved to San Francisco.

In this economy the Metro Rail should run 24/7...it would prevent fewer traffic and accidents on the road not to mention DUI's. That being said, there also should be a police presence on the train as well. I'm just say'n....

I used the train from culver city to downtown the first time last week. It was great! I will definitely use it more for downtown trips with these increased hours, and can't wait for the next stop on the expo line to open!

I think I made this happen with the secret. I should be thanked.

I do appreciate the fact that it will be running later. I've been down there missed the last train (11:45 PM!?!?!) and had to run up to the street and take buses home. It's horrible sometimes to be a commuter in L.A. when your trip home can take upwards of 2 and a half hours if it's after midnight.

They should all week sounds like more jobs too!

I have told so many people that i would go downtown and to Hollywood Bars so much more often if ONLY the metro ran later

Anybody who's gone through a late night drive-thru knows the rush doesn't start til after 2 am...

It seems silly to only run them until the bars close. They should run long enough for those too tipsy to drive to be able to use them.

Metro trains should run 24/7 for people with demanding jobs and work shifts. 24/7 trains would also reduce drunk driving.

Bill Lucas
Bill Lucas

The trains should run until 2:45 or 3:00am so that someone can be out until the bars close and then can still take their drunk ass home via train, instead of via Cop. But 2am is a good start.

The bars close at 2. Too bad they didn't do this 30 years ago before my dui's
