Bob Marley Day Comes to L.A. as Countdown to Marijuana Ban Begins (Irony?)

City Hall continues to ream you with parking tickets, rock you with the worst roads in America, and wow you with red ink.

But the most important thing on the plate of the L.A. City Council today was ... Bob Marley.

Yes. Your favorite, overpaid politicians earned their highest-in-the-nation salaries today by getting officially irie with your precious tax dollars:

The City Council declared that today is Bob Marley Day in L.A. We're sure the community of Venice is elated.

The eight paragraph resolution by Councilman Tom LaBonge was adopted to mark the DVD release today of the film Marley. Really. A sample of the document:

WHEREAS, the film features rare concert footage and interviews with Marley's family and friends, such as his son Ziggy and wife Rita Marley and Jimmy Cliff. Performances of hits such as "One Love," "I Shot the Sheriff," "No Woman, No Cry" and "Jammin" are also shown as Marley and the Wailers hit the world stage ...

Official city business, this.

Does anyone find it a little ironic that as the council today was stumbling over itself to honor the reggae master (two of the singer's children, Ziggy and Karen, accepted the proclamation from LaBonge and Councilman Joe Buscaino, according to City News Service), the countdown to L.A.'s medical marijuana dispensary prohibition was underway?

Anyone?

When talking about the life and work of Bob Marley, and how he has contributed to try to right wrongs and promote civil rights, through the power of his music and words and the influence his work has had on millions and millions of people world wide, we must put him in the same company of  Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. He is that important a figure. To relect or hide behind the irony if it is so, of the fact that Bob Marley Day here in LA, coincides with the City Council's efforts to close Marajuan Dispenseries, is frankly, not just missing the point, but also a great dishonor to one of the most important people to grace this earth in our lifetime.

Bob Marley has influenced the entire world with his music, which will live on to be rediscovered by more and more generations to come.  His work has affected my life and my art so much.  I paid tribute to him with a surreal and psychedelic portrait inspired by his words and a little 4/20 action.  You can see it on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/05/in-memoriam-bob-marley.html
