The dog days of summer are here, the 4th of July is way back in the rear view, and the season is winding down.

But, for whatever reason, authorities across L.A. county are turning up the heat on drunk drivers with a "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign that starts today and runs through September 3.

Not only that, but the LAPD plans to strike hard in the heart of Hollywood tonight:

The LAPD is setting up a checkpoint from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Hollywood Boulevard between Bronson Avenue and Gower Street.

Meanwhile, the law enforcement departments that are part of L.A. County's "Avoid the 100" local agencies alliance are launching a late summer crackdown that includes several checkpoints and across the county this weekend.

Affected communities include Gardena, Pasadena, South Los Angeles, North Hollywood El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Redondo, Torrance, Burbank, Santa Monica, Baldwin Park, Beverly Hills, San Gabriel, Lynwood, LAPD's Devonshire area and lots of freeways (via the CHP).

Well its smarter than giving tickets to depressed homeless people for drinking in public for one they aint gonna pay them or the court cost basically its a waste of time and money and not to mention the space in jail

Same in every country, they use safety as a means to making money. Scotland has speed cameras all over the place which make the government a fortune, but the bottom line is still the same...... The fine is a punishment for breaking a law that is in place to make the roads safer, don't break the law.... Don't feed their pockets, happy days :)

going north on Glendale Blv., north of Alvarado, 1/2 block before the Carls Jr., there are always motorcycle cops on a checkpoint usually after 4:30 PM. The trouble w/ this strategy to exterminate the poor in LA is that this check point is inconstitutional for various reasons, but the most important is bc it stops business & commerce right before the entrance of Fwy 2 North. Its a shame that police in a civilized city tries to control its ppl that pay for everything they have in such a way. I believe that is time for a real chance.. We need real officials to represent the real interes of its citicens in LA City Hall, State & Federal. Stop bastardism!!

Agreed, if you feel the need to drink and drive you are an absolute moron and deserve to be caught before you hurt someone

People shouldn't be drinking and driving in the FIRST PLACE. This article shouldn't prohibit people from going out (and it won't). If it does, you have more serious issues.

So irresponsible of LA Weekly to publicize this. This is not fair to Hollywood, which might see less business as people go drink elsewhere, and not fair to the LAPD trying to crack down on drunk drivers. Why are you warning people of this?
