Kevin James, Non-Entity in L.A. Mayor's Race, Latches on to Non-Issue, Rape Kits

Categories: Crazytown

kevin james square.JPG
Kevin James.
Gay Republican mayoral candidate Kevin James, who has no shot at becoming the leader of L.A. City Hall, has finally found the issue that could turn things around for his campaign:

Rape kits.

That's right, the would-be mayor and conservative radio (870 KRLA AM) talk show host today hanged his star on this non-issue with an online video ad:

Fair enough. It's a valid concern ... last year!

You see, while the backlog for DNA testing on rape kits was an embarrassment for the LAPD for a few years, the department caught up with its testing ... last year!

That fact is even noted it James' own video!

So why, why James?!

Well, to be fair, James wants to take credit for the issue. In a statement he trumpets his ...

... involvement as a radio broadcaster in the elimination of the rape kit backlog in Los Angeles. Despite victims' pleas for assistance from LA City's elected officials, few would pay attention until Kevin James raised the issue nightly on his radio program. Eventually the rape kit backlog was completely eradicated.

Yeah, Kevin, it was your three listeners who really made this happen.

Well, we will give you this, KJ: Latching on to non-issues is a staple of L.A. City Hall politics.

Even if you don't make it in 2013 as you battle the likes of Eric Garcetti, Wendy Greuel and Jan Perry, you will have certainly learned to take your eye off the ball like an L.A. political pro.

I am reading this article on Jan 20 2013. Apparently, the writer is not a prophet nor the son of a prophet as Kevin James is virtually tied for second place in the Mayors race, with six weeks left to go. The three city insiders are now attacking each other trying to strip away votes from each other. Their records in office are the reason they are faltering.

So the guy who is most famous for comparing Obama to Neville Chamberlain because of "the appeasement", when he actually had no idea what Neville Chamberlain did to appease Hitler, as was pointed out repeatedly in an excruciating interview on the teevee, now want to lend his genius to the governance of our second largest city. What could possibly go wrong?

This author is missing the Point. It's about being effective and efficient and sensible. As I write this I am wondering if the author is truly serious about his article. He can't be.  Kevin James is a great candidate and he has my support.

WILL DENNIS ROMERO RESPOND TO ANY OF THESE COMMENTS AND VERY VALID POINTS BEING MADE?   WILL HE APOLOGIZE TO THE PEOPLE HE HAS OFFENDED? WILL HE BOTHER DOING RESEARCH BEFORE WRITING ANOTHER ARTICLE?

The answer to all is probably not, so I won't hold my breath.   I'd also like to add  "bach bach bach bach, here chicken chicken chicken."  The sick part is you probably still truly believe you've done nothing wrong here.

What an insult to rape victims to call this a "non-issue."  By pushing this, James shows he cares about the residents of Los Angeles, not the big money special interests.  Also, I take issue with you saying he has "no shot" at becoming mayor.  Angelenos are sick and tired of insider politicians.  The Wall Street Journal said L.A. is the second most corrupt big city in the U.S.  We need an outsider like Kevin James to turn this city around and clean up the corruption at City Hall.  Go Kevin James!

Wow, You just made a name for yourself, to avoid the unemployment lines. As a journalist you are a disgrace, and should be fired.  Let me educate you a bit. A person who wants to run for a public office to help all of us, can be Gay , republican , Libral, Moslim, christian, Jew , Hispanic "like the mayor who we have in position today ",a woman and on and on, just to educate you a bit further it is what we call it " a society". I am sure yo had encountered some education to be a journalist I hope, and just to refresh your memory it was the class of social studies or ethics, do you remember it now.  Calling someone like Mr. James a Gay and a republican you are making an statement by judging a person according to their sexual preferences and according to their political beliefs, is what  Kevin's running mates are paying you to do.  I believe both statements are wrong coming from a person like your self who's job is to inform the public about events and not to judge the events without any researches. I do not know for how long you have been writing for your paper " The La Weekly". Kevin James was a former U.S. Attorney in your city The city of Angles, a person who wants to shape up a corrupted city like Los Angeles that what we all should cheer about.

You Just trying to kill his America dreams by judging the outcome of next year mayoral election, that is not what a journalist job to do, I am sorry " is not what they used to do", because corruption is gone wild even possibly some money into your own pocket who knows?,

Now by taking your advice to undermines Gay's and Republicans only, then I have to close and not to watch my television programs any more, because most of Hollywood and the entertainment industry, Including The big gurus of film making are Gay's or possibly in favor of gay community, which also will forbid me from going to the movies any more regardless what are the messages we should learn from the movies at times. This means you are shutting down an Important Public educational field , and assuming just assuming That your Boss who did let you to write the article will not be offended if his a Gay person, and by the way have you checked with your boss, just in case? after all you are a sort of educational tool for the public as well.

Mr. Romero, I am calling you Mr. but I do not know you deserve it because it take some ethical measures for an ethical person to earn his place in the society to be called and labeled as Mister.

In conclusion, You are killing the messenger without reading the his message, and that's is wrong. I will help Mr. Kevin James's, I assume " he earned it" , and his Cause to be our next Mayor of Los Angeles, and please return all the favors you have been promised by the other opponents. Furthermore, I well like to advice you to ck the Rape Kits and see if your name is included or not, because with your harsh non sense words, you just raped an honorable man like Kevin along with all the Republican American Presidents through out our history, as well as some of the Public whom are reading your delusional news paper. Oh by the way, I would like also to Inform you that I am not a gay person but a proud american and a republican, who is an Immigrant and loves this country dearly. Shame on you.

I really can't resist adding that I am raising an autistic child who was the product of a rape that happened to me while I was in college. Too good to be true for this case, right? Nope. Thanks a lot Dennis, you hit the ball out of the park on this one for me.

I hadn't heard of Kevin James before today, but now I am thrilled to say I will be voting for him for Mayor. God bless you Mr. James, you have done so much for those women!

Mr. Romero,

I thought you had dug your grave deep enough by the time I reached the end of this asinine excuse for journalism, but then I went on to read your comments below in response to other readers, and I see that you have done an excellent job of burying yourself as well. Though there are many wildly offensive statements en masse here, I'm only going to focus on the overarching one which is the walking insult that you are to credible journalists everywhere. Your only remote shred of saving grace here is that this is a blog, because obviously your editors know you are too incompetent to let write on more serious things. Oh, and I was kidding about only focusing on the overarching offense here-- I am going to lambaste you for all of them, because I enjoy it, and because someone as ignorant as you deserves it.

1) Your claims about the race are false, and you admitted below that you did zero research. You cannot tell me that you expect anyone to give you credence for this, especially when you attempt to pass off something as fact that is clearly a (misinformed) opinion. Making statements that are not corroborated in fact and reality is pretty misleading if you ask me. Not responsible journalism at all.

2) Unlike you, I actually do research. Tell me how the opinion of a guy who has zero background in public policy (outside of commiserating with other would-be journalists, that is), who failed to research the very thing he is ranting about, and who fancies himself a 'dance music expert'-- came to believe that this is something worth putting out to the masses. Are you so arrogant that you assume people are dumb and will blindly follow what you say? How offensive. That brings me to my third point...

3) You are utterly callous in your regard for:

             A. Gays

             B. Rape Victims

             C. Women

             D. Mentally Challenged individuals, or 'tards' as you say

             E. Hispanics

OK, so E is false, but I threw it in there because you insult your own people and how far they have come in this country when you use the power of your pulpit to be so offensive and insensitive, and all-around bad at reporting credible news. But I digress. How one manages to insult four groups of people in 4 paragraphs and a one-sentence commentary is almost impressive. Considering what I can infer about your political leanings, this seems slightly at odds with them. What does anything in this article have to do with the fact that Kevin is gay? If you neglect to respond to any of my criticisms thus far, I challenge you to at least answer that.

Finally, Kevin James performed a wonderful and amazing service in rectifying the rape backlog issue, not as a campaign platform (he addresses all of the issues, remember? no, because you never did research), but because he is a decent human being and he used the power of *his* pulpit for something good. Have you done that today? Ever? I would be hard-pressed to find a person, Democrat or Republican, who would argue this is a bad thing in general, much less for ancillary benefit to his campaign. It is tacky and disappointing to see our city's journalists resort to this extreme low of attacking candidates of the opposite party that they have to use rape victims to further their agendas.

Shame on you, Dennis-- we can all see right through you.

OMG What kind of journalism is this? Really? Dennis, you are putting down a man who took great interest in getting Rape Kits tested and filed? And then you open your piece with

"GAY REPUBLICAN"? Would you do that with a "GAY DEMOCRAT"? And now, you are God predicting the outcome of this race? That's a bit egotistical Dennis, don't you think?

You have now shown that you disapprove of Gays and Women and don't appreciate Kevin James' involvement at all in getting those Rape Kits tested and filed. Does your decision about Kevin change because he is Gay? Do you NOT think that rape crimes are important for women seriously attacked?

You don't give him any credit for his past accomplishments, other than Rape Kits and then you lead your readers to such indoctrination?

I guess the only way to see this is, you are in the tank for some democrat and this was your payback to them. You need to resign as a journalist and take on a job with Wendy Gruel, Eric Garcetti or Jan Perry!

YES......TO ME, AS A WOMAN IN LOS ANGELES, THOSE RAPE KITS SITTING THERE WITH NO ONE DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THEM AND THE $8 MILLION WE LOST IS MAJOR! James took up the mission based on what those callers called about. He didn't have to Dennis! I WONDER WHAT YOU WOULD HAVE DONE, IF YOU HAD HEARD ABOUT THEM SITTING THERE NOT FINDING THE BAD GUY!  So much you know Dennis. You just shot yourself in the foot!

You have now shamed your profession as a journalist and exposed yourself as a liberal democrat bedfellow! Who wants to read your articles now?

And you are clearly a non-journalist. If you had done three minutes of research into this issue, you would have seen that the "clearing" of rape kits the LAPD did applies ONLY to the "historic" backlog--a term that applies only to kits that have languished in *labs* prior to 2008. This does not account for the thousands of kits held in police storage before or since that time, or kits that came into after the "historic" cutoff--a whole new backlog. Until there is a protocol put in place to ensure that kits do not build up, this is indeed a grave issue of public health and safety that will continue to grow. I suppose you could ask one of the thousands of women waiting for their kits to be tested if they feel it is a non-issue, but something tells me that would be far too much effort for you to make. You are an embarrassment to the field of journalism.

@buriedjustice James addresses the backlog and acknowledges himself it has been cleared. If you have a problem with that, maybe you should address your comments to him.

@djromero No--My problem is with you and your article, calling the Rape Kit Backlog a non-issue. I think I was very clear about this, and your reply doesn't address any of the facts that you asked me to provide in order to correct the record, as you so generously offered to do.

Dennis Romero, great journalism I wonder what those women from the rape treatment organization would think about this article and you.  you should send it to them. oh and by the way you shouldn't publish things when its clear you have very little idea about what your talking about and have done no research on the candidate, the race, the polls, and the issues kevin james is raising.  its embarrassing for you and offensive to me

@dennisromerosucks Thanks for your bravely anonymous feedback. Without reading the whole post to you, I'll note that it's not about rape, it's about an issue that has been resolved. Get it? No? Didn't think so.

As for James, you're right, I haven't done my research because he's a non-starter.

dennisromerosucks
dennisromerosucks like.author.displayName 1 Like

@djromero Let's start with you don't have one fact in here so how could I point that out? o you don't want to be maligned??? Bet Kevin James didn't either or those rape victims but you had no problem with that.  He's a non-starter? says who? based on what? So you've admitted that you haven't done research and your a journalist, and yet still stating very strong opinions as facts, which are backed by no facts and no research. Bad Move. Here's the facts.  James polled better then elected officials in many categories according to a poll done by LMU months ago, before beutner even dropped out.  Also check out his website, he talks about every issue and has solutions for them. Oh wait and RAPE IS MOST CERTAINLY AN ISSUE.  this article is offensive to women, victims, gays(notice you had to throw that in there at the beginning even though its irrelevant), and journalism as a whole. amazing your so offensive to those groups given your most likely political leanings.  You'll probably regret this career wise.  But thanks for posting James' ad at least

Mr. Romero:  Fortunately, we live in a society where everyone has the right to voice their opinion.  With the access you have to "inform" others, I would have hoped and expected that you would have taken  responsibility for your words and, had you done some professional research, see that your obvious bias colored your objectivity.

As I see the issue, City Hall had ignored this problem for a long time and when it came to Kevin James' attention, he did the professional research necessary and used his influence to make that known.  The fact that this did not happen yesterday, really has no relevance.  To me, his actions indicated that he clearly cares and knows how to get action---something rarely seen by the "insiders" who run our government--both locally and nationally.  He is, by the way, a former prosecutor.

I, personally, am sick and tired of being manipulated and short-changed by our professional politicians.  I think it is both refreshing and hopeful that a non-politician and an outsider can get results and serve his audience.  I hope you have uncovered something that will activate all of us who have felt powerless to make changes.  The first thing we can do is elect Kevin James as the next mayor of Los Angeles.  I am certain that major changes will follow.

Well maybe the ad is trying to say "here is something that I was able to help do, and something that we can not let happen again, and something that current city leadership ignored/allowed to happen/ and failed to step in, and this is why im running"   its telling a story.  that seems pretty clear, yet you make it seem like James is trying to again eradicate something he already helped eradicate that his other opponents ignored.   he is telling the story, as it should be.   You are a journalist because you chose that occupation and now your identity is of public knowledge.  i am not a journalist, because i didn't want that. I reveal myself as your worst nightmare, because I can promise I will make sure this article goes around, and it won't just be my opinion that is telling you how offensive you are.  now calling me a "tard"  I bet mentally challenged people and their families wouldn't like that.  Please keep responding and offending more groups of people you are on a roll.

You're confused. I never said rape was not an issue. I said the rape backlogs were not an issue. Even James' own ad says that. I'm a non-journalist who teaches journalism and has 20 years experience.

While you continue to call names and blame the messenger so bravely, why don't you tell us your real identity without hiding behind anonymity.

I might be a non-journalist, but at least I put my name on top of my words.

@djromero  @buriedjustice  I'd love to take you up on the bet because I garuntee James will be the next Mayor of LA.  why don't you look up the LMU poll done back in february (which would just have gotten better for James since then).  This should end that argument.  its unprecedented for a non-elected to poll as well as he did and beat out his opponents in many catagories.  people are fed up with any city hall insider and the biased media (YOU).  also why dont you ask the director for the center of the study of Los Angeles, Fernando Guerra, what he thinks about james' shot. he did the poll.  and he's a professor.  you say all this stuff and have litterally nothing to back it up

@buriedjustice You haven't named one fact that was reported erroneously. That's not the same as raising erroneous facts.

Kevin James does not have a chance in hell. No one who covers City Hall, not a single reporter, thinks so. Not a single professor who follows L.A. politics thinks so. I'll bet you.

@djromero I have already done precisely that. Please go ahead, but please feel free to acknowledge that lack of research is no way to handle an issue like this. Your power as a journalist can be used to educate--and we need it. But in this instance, you're spreading a dangerous misconception.
