Mike Feuer Demands 10 Debates; Carmen Trutanich Raises It To 100

During his campaign for D.A., City Attorney Carmen Trutanich did everything he could to avoid debates. First, he said his invitation got lost. Then he blamed scheduling conflicts.

After losing that race, he's taking a much different approach for his re-election campaign. This morning, Assemblyman Mike Feuer challenged him to 10 debates between now and March.

Seems like a lot, but Trutanich says bring it on.

"We're not gonna do 10," said Rick Taylor, Trutanich's consultant. "We're gonna do 100."

Talk about the fervor of the recently converted.

What say you, Mike Feuer? "I am glad Mr. Trutanich has accepted my challenge to a series of spirited debates this primary election," Feuer said in a statement. "I will debate Mr. Trutanich anytime, anywhere, and as many times as possible."

Feuer also suggested several moderators, including KPCC's Larry Mantle and NBC's Conan Nolan.

Back to you, Trutanich campaign:

"I got no problem doing Larry's show, but we want to go into the community," Taylor said. "If they're serious about doing debates, they should be calling us, not playing silly games in the media."

Also today, another challenger took aim at Trutanich in a YouTube TV spot. Greg Smith, an attorney who specializes in representing police officers, attacked Trutanich over the 31% drop in gang prosecutions on his watch.

It's not clear how much impact these videos have, other than making the candidate feel like a real candidate. So far, this one has about 14 views on YouTube.

"Once it gets to 20 clicks, we might respond," said John Schwada, Trutanich's spokesman.

Carmen 'the Clown' Trutanich's newly found interest in attending debates does stand in contrast to his attitude during his failed DA campaign. Maddaus is right, Trutanich did clam he was not invited, and when nobody believed that, he claimed scheduling conflicts, and when nobody believed that, he claimed he had to look after his mummy in hospital. All these were lame excuses to avoid answering awkward questions about Trutanich's troubled relationship with the truth; like:

1) reneging on his Pledge to Serve,

2) falsely claiming non-existent police endorsements,

3) coning Sheriff Baca into making an illegal in-uniform endorsement,

4) trying to use a false and misleading ballot designation,

5) lying about having 724, 765 YouTube views for his DA campaign video,

6) lying about not knowing his DA personnel file was missing,

7) falsely accusing DA Steve Cooley 'suspicious political activity,' and of course,

8) falsely claiming to have been 'surrounded and shot at by gangmembers.'

Are we to believe that Trutanich will actually debate Feuer and Smith on his lousy record as LA's Chief Liar? No. Hell will freeze over before Trutanich tells the truth; it is contrary to his nature and and alien concept to him. The devil is always in the details with Trutanich and just wait until LA's Chief Liar starts fudging the issue and insisting that he only discuss the topics he wants to discuss in debates. That won't fly. Trutanich thinks he can con us into believing that he's done a good job as City Attorney, but the reality is very different. He spent far too much time campaigning to be DA while gang prosecutions fell by 31%, he screwed up the medical marijuana ordinance, he tried to sell us on an disastrous 'ACE' program that sneaked in Grand Jury powers and kangaroo courts, and he couldn't even prosecute the Occupy LA protesters because he screwed up checking the paperwork.

A true debate will expose Trutanich as the master of false and misleading statements, and an utter failure in everything but self-promotion. Simply put, Trutanich cannot be trusted, and the voters of LA know it.

@losangelesdragnet Carmen Trutanich has lied to the people of LA so many times that he cannot be believed about anything he says. If he told me it was nighttime, I would look outside to check. I hope that the election will be between Gregory Smith and Michael Feuer, and that Carmen Trutanich falls out at the primary, like he did in the DA race.

Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen “Nuch” Trutanich reelection campaign rejects as sadly unsatisfactory Mike Feuer's proposal for only ten debates. We propose that the two men debate as often as possible in all of the city’s neighborhoods.

It'll take dozens of debates to fully flesh out Trutanich’s lengthy record of accomplishments and to talk to all the communities in Los Angeles who have been so well served by Trutanich during the last four years. In the words of Rick Taylor, the Trutanich campaign’s chief strategist: “Perhaps ten debates is enough debates for Feuer, who's record is thin. But we’ll need a lot more to tell our success story and reach all communities.’’

And as much as the Trutanich campaign loves Beverly Hills, we also insist that the debates occur only in the city of Los Angeles, not in Beverly Hills. “We will not debate Feuer in his backyard," Taylor said.

Context: For the past six years state assemblyman Feuer has represented Beverly Hills in Sacramento. “It may be a challenge for Feuer to adjust to running for a city of Los Angeles position,” Taylor said. “But this is a city of Los Angeles-only position. Voters in Beverly Hills are not allowed.”

The Trutanich campaign is also surprised by Feuer’s debate challenge. “Feuer likes to think of himself as a man of his word and we’d like to think he’d keep it by withdrawing from this race,” Taylor said. “After all, Feuer told numerous people he would not run against Trutanich if Trutanich ran for reelection. Well, Trutanich is running for reelection, has been for some time, and I guess it’s clear now that Feuer is violating his promise. But this is what voters can expect from a career politician.”

Feuer is running for city attorney after voters forced him out of the state assembly. In 2008, Feuer was one of 20 career politicians who brazenly used their own campaign money to save their Sacramento jobs (Feuer spent $25,000 on that campaign).  The gang of  20 provided critical support to Prop. 93, a measure designed to make it easier for these politicians to stay in their Sacramento jobs. That measure was defeated by a 2:1 margin by voters. That defeat left Feuer with no legal way to remain in the state assembly when his current term expires this coming December.

In 1999, Feuer was defeated when he first ran for the LA City Attorney’s job by Rocky Delgadillo. Some observers at the time doubted if the often preachy, self-righteous Feuer, a Harvard lawyer with negligible courtroom experience, would pass the smell test with LA voters looking for a qualified City Attorney. It didn't then. Now he's coming back for a second try with nothing more on his resume than he spent six years as a Sacramento politician? Incredible.

The Trutanich campaign is looking forward to matching our record of real achievement in running one of the biggest public law firms in the nation against that of  Feuer, who has managed nothing more challenging than his assembly office and its two dozen staffers.

@john.schwada John, I'm happy that you are stating the facts and concentrating on what's important. The job that Trutanich has done is commendable. We all know the media does not want Trutanich to win. The only reason is that he is not corrupted by the system. he refuses to play the game. He is doing his job and I am proud of him. It is sad to see the people are falling for the media. A campaign strategy "the pledge" vs finding out what Carmen has done for the City.

@john.schwada You are not serious are you? You are attacking Feuer for 'violating his pledge' not to run against Trutanich? First of all, Feuer never made that pledge, he dodged the question saying he expected Trutanich to win the DA race. But, of course, your guy Trutanich not only signed a written sworn pledge, but he freely violated it. That's why he's trying to pay off LA's BEST for ten cents in the dollar and a fistful of IOUs.

As usual, more deceit and deception from LA's Chief Liar.
