Endeavour Flyover List Includes Disneyland, Getty Museum, Universal Studios

The LAPD really thinks you're retarded. Here's your chance to prove the department wrong.

You see, L.A. police officials are afraid that you'll be so wowed by the sight of retired Space Shuttle Endeavour cruising above town on a 747 that you'll take your eyes off the road and crash your car Friday morning.

Really. So here's the official list of flyover sites, according to FAA spokesman Ian Gregor. Don't stop, look up and bend your fenders. Find a safe place to park:

Boeing plant in Seal Beach
California Science Center
Disneyland
Getty Museum
Griffith Observatory
Huntington Beach
JPL
L.A. City Hall
Queen Mary
Santa Monica Pier
Space X in Hawthorne
Universal Studios

(Officials won't give out the order of appearances or the exact route for security reasons.)

The LAPD, meanwhile, is really worried about you taking your eyes off the road. Here's what the department says:

This is an impressive sight that has the potential for distracting drivers and pedestrians. ... Law enforcement and transportation officials want to remind motorists and visitors not to stop on the roads or highways in order to view or take photographs of the shuttle flyover. These actions can contribute to traffic congestion and cause accidents. We ask those that are interested in seeking out the best opportunity to watch this event to make arrangements in advance.

LAPD officials are holding a news conference tomorrow morning to, uh, drive this point home.

According to NASA, all this action will be happening shortly before 11 a.m. Friday, when it's expected to land at LAX.

The FAA's Gregor gives us a better window, however, for the flyovers, saying that 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. will be prime time for this show.

Controversially, the shuttle eventually will be taken via surface streets to its new home at the California Science Center: 265 trees will need to be chopped down.

More immediately, the vehicle will go into hiding at a hangar until Oct. 13, when it will be towed to the Center at Exposition Park.

In any case, there are places to have a safe viewing of its last time in the air, including, it would appear, around City Hall (parked, of course), the Griffith Observatory, maybe Runyon Canyon Park and other parts of the Hollywood Hills.

Or you could head toward the airport. Conveniently, the El Segundo Police Department will be cordoning off the 300 to 600 blocks of East Imperial Avenue for your viewing pleasure. Other spots: The 700 block of West Imperial Avenue and a "greenbelt" at Imperial Avenue and California Street. More.

Enjoy. Try not to stop in the middle of traffic and take a photo. The LAPD will be looking for you space cases.

Dennis is obviously falling off the 'Left' fence....and anti-LAPD as is the entire LA Weekly staff and publication as a whole (has always been the case...), but clearly fits the mold of the contemporary reporter by turning any and every story into a negative. This shining example of today mass media and it's infatuation with reporting ONLY the negativity of life and society (i.e. shootings, lawsuits, murder, corruption, sex scandals) is the reason why so many people nowadays are choosing not to watch or read the news, especially when it comes from idiots like Dennis who scramble for last-minute material to report on to meet their deadline, when nothing 'bad' is happening or "newsworthy." Keep up the good fight, LA Weekly, nice job in finding talented reporters like Dennis who give your reputable publication such great credibility!

P.S. Plus all the very big old trees the city of L.A. cut just to clear the path for the Endeavor -Only in the U.S.!

28 million dollars is the cost for shipping the Endeavor to L.A. - I thought we are in a recession with high unemployment rate with people having nothing to eat ??? - Please help me out here, because I don't understand.

ive been lucky to have seen this event over a dozen times. but then again, the whole antelope valley has seen it many times back in the day.  it is a sight to see. to me to see a shuttle on the back of that plane. that is insane. but any of us can see the shuttle once it is on display. but it will be cool to see it one more time in the air. i have a picture of me as a young boy shaking the hands of the first two shuttle pilots. i think it was Crippen and Young. cant remember. but it was at Rockwell where my father worked. the pic was on the Lancaster newspaper's front page. The Shuttle era was awesome and i am glad i got to witness it up front thanks to my dad. i went to many open houses at Rockwell to see every one of the shuttles. i miss those days a lot. luckily i still have my dad around to talk about those days.

I hope the Editor of the LA Weekly uses the "R" word - RETIRED, for Dennis Romero.  He doesn't deserve a public platform.   Maybe the Editor should retire himself while he's at it.

@Elvissmith Seriously. AND not to mention, the LAPD have a very valid point. Did no one at the Weekly see this clown's story before posting it?

I've been retarded to read the LA Weekly for twenty of my thirty three years on earth. We're done now, LA Weekly, unless you post an apology and retraction. Maybe one not written by Dennis Romero, who might be . . . um . . . you know . . .

Retarded r-e-a-l-l-y should not be in your article. It really, really shouldn't be one of the first ten words in your article.

1. Of course they think we're "retarded"; we mostly are. You're gonna tell me you honestly think all the stupid ass people in this city, let alone planet, should be given the benefit of the doubt when it comes to driving in the face of a distraction? The people in the city can't even drive without killing themselves or mowing down others due to texting or tweeting or whatever stupid shit they do which does not include safe driving!

2. What kind of legit publication uses the word retarded in print?! You guys are turning into more and more of a joke!
