Madeleine Brand Out at KPCC: Alex Cohen Slides Into Role Next to A. Martinez

Madeleine.
So, um, KPCC (89.3 FM) bumps the beloved Patt Morrison from her afternoon show in part to make way for a much-ballyhooed program, "Brand Martinez," built around host Madeleine Brand.

In the process Angelenos got, from the most expensive "listener-supported" station ever, canned "world news" from the BBC in place of the Times' legend Morrison, who has more local knowledge than just about anybody. Because L.A. is just gaga over world news with a British accent.

But today things got real interesting:

The centerpiece of said moves, Madeleine Brand, peaced out like a rapper who just sprayed champagne all over her audience.

Yep, after all that, KPCC announced the Brand is leaving the building "to pursue other career opportunities."

This is almost two years to the day later that the "Madeleine Brand Show" premiered at KPCC. ("Brand Martinez" was a recent remix that debuted after a much-publicized search for a Latino co-host).

In her place on the show formerly known as "Brand Martinez," with co-host A. Martinez, will be public radio veteran Alex Cohen.

So is it going to be "Cohen Martinez?"

KPCC has been on a hiring spree, spending all that money it begs you for rather irresponsibly, if you ask us. It has bought editor upon editor upon editor to bring you flat news online that you usually see elsewhere first (and with way more attitude, we might add).

Then it takes Morrison, one of the more credible voices on the local airwaves, out of the mix ... for this?

What a mess.

You know what radio station is looking good right about now? Good old KCRW (89.9 FM).

[Added at 1:40 p.m.]: Maybe Madeleine wasn't too cool with having a co-host. LA Weekly staffer Tessa Stuart dug up this May tweet from the original "Madeleine Brand Show" (the account name was later changed to reflect the "Brand Martinez" redux):

brand tweet.JPG

It's a show about a radio talk-show host (played by Dane Cook) stuck with a public-radio sidekick he doesn't like.

[Added at 3:16 p.m.]: The Wrap reports that Brand might have quit over having to work with Martinez:

An individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap that Brand had told [KPCC editorial chief Russ] Stanton and SCPR CEO Bill Davis that she would not stay if Martinez remained her co-host. Apparently the station did not believe she would follow through, leaving them shocked by the decision announced on Friday.

Two points especially upset me: There is a lovely actor who gained fame in the soap opera world--under the (real) nickname A Martinez! All the men older than he had names starting with A and Martinez evolved from "Little A" to "A" and a nice way to stand out in Hollywood! A Martinez the actor was working over 20 years ago! Worst of all, not only did KPCC's "A Martinez" stealthe actor's name but he made up a story that was muchto disingenuous to pass muster--he is a whiney, steroid loving character who has said "It's not fair to want developed muscles and work so hard at it and then nothave the same results as other men!" he says with steroids anyone can be a champion! And he calls this prevarication fair and he is on public radio?

Also, I find I endure self aggrandizing recorded

announcements repeating every 10-15 minutes

that "this public station costs money, it's not free

so everyone donate a car, become a sustaining

member or leave us your estate in your will!" and

it is specious reasoning to claim this is not pitching for money! None of this was intended by the architects

of the dream of educational radio; I know for sure because my father pioneered journalism and taught the entire state of Wisconsin how to examine and understand news broadcasting! He produced more radio in his 30 years as head of the newsroom at WHA, apparently, than anyone in history!

Just for the record; dad did all he did with piles of

notepads, steno pads, Blackwing and Ebony pencils

and pocket sized notebooks for his suit coats;

he had a manual typewriter and, later, a heavy but

portable tape recorder!

He also had the most essential asset a working journalist can have; a great sense of humour! In the cover of one of his little spiral notebooks, which I found after he died, he had scrawled "Roy Vogelman--World's Leading Person". I find the forced and not amusing efforts at KPCC to be worse than not funny--they insult the intelligence and take up valuable time in my head!

I have tried and tried to give Martinez a chance.. but he reads questions, has no follow up, no substance, and I am switching back to KCRW. what a waste or talent to let Madelyn go and Pat M. too. Goodbye to KPCC in terms of future donations. Makes no sense

Doesn't ANYBODY know who Martinez is and what he's previously done?  Yeah, sports radio, but do you know why he's called "The Juicer" at KSPN?  Listen to this, esp. starting at 13:00, and then try to imagine Madeline working with him.  Guarantee you'll be shocked, guarantee.

Bummer!  One week I wake up to the most interesting interview I've heard in a long time... the next week I sleep the whole morning!  I miss Madeline!

If you were going to get rid of anyone it should have been Larry Mantle... the way he talks over his guests!! I change the station!  He comes across so arrogant!

With all due respect to Larry Mantle, no one at KPCC has the gravitas and charisma of a Patt Morrison; which made me wonder why her show was canceled.  And now with Madeleine Brand's ugly departure, I am now wondering about the competency of station management.

I will probably cease my support of the station.

Ex-Oligarch

Madeline Brand's self-impressed and inane hipster rambling was an uninformative waste of airtime. Pat Morrison may be well-connected, but her blind partisanship, unwavering political correctness and unquestioning attitude towards the local political and business elites made her interviews a predictable, unenlightening snooze. Good riddance to them both.

What this article fails to mention is that the entire reason A. Martinez was hired and shoe-horned into the lineup was to fulfill the requirements of a multi-million dollar grant from CPB.

So, money pushed this change, despite that it hurt their ratings.

I find it amazing that it took the KPCC HR department nearly a year to find a person of Latino heritage in LA to fill the spot of a (required) Latino news anchor and then they went with a guy whose background was all sports.

By the way, I'm curious, is the station manager Russ Stanton any relation to Frank Stanton?

As in, "From the Frank Stanton Studios...."?

I give it until Oct. 1 for KCRW to announce they've hired Brand (and certainly they already agreed to hire her before she exited KPCC)

Mark my words, KCRW will drop their "The World" network newscast at noon and replace it with Brand. Very bad move KPCC, you took a dive for the short end money and a one way ticket to Palookaville. Brilliant move Madeline.

I thought LA Weekly would be overjoyed to see a latino get a job on drive time radio... affirmative action no less... with a bag of money to boot.

Maybe if you gather enough funds, you can get him on KFI too!

@Haah The fundamental problem is his personality and delivery is extremely wooden. I've heard his sports stuff, and you can tell where his heart is.

KCRW is looking good right about now because they take so much corporate sponsorship, they're no different form KABC.  KPFK is my source, no corporate money there.

If the corporate support bothers you, go to KCRW and help them raise more money from listeners. Do you think everyone works for free?
