Carmen Elena Chavez, 19, Arrested In Alleged DUI Mercedes Crash That Killed 2 In DTLA
A night of partying for four young people ended in death for two innocent homeless residents mowed down as they slept on a downtown sidewalk yesterday morning, authorities allege.
The 1989 Mercedes E Class that killed them was driven by 19-year-old Carmen Elena Chavez, who was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, the LAPD said in a statement.
According to reports three others were in the car with her:
A witness told Fox 11 News that all four inside the car fled but that some of them came back, ostensibly to retrieve purses and belongings.
Cops said it happened at 12:05 a.m. on Crocker Street near East Fourth Street in Skid Row. According to reports the Mercedes was making a turn and veered out of control, hitting a building and running over the two were sleeping on a sidewalk.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, the LAPD stated:
She lost control of her car as she was making a right turn at an unsafe speed. She was found to be under the influence of alcohol ...
LAPD Sgt. Steve Bailey told City News Service that the Mercedes ...
... ran off the road, hit the building, went down the sidewalk and ran over two people sleeping on the sidewalk. Speed is definitely going to be a factor in this one, because from the time they hit the building until the car came to rest it covered 50 feet.
The victims had not been identified.
Chavez was jailed in lieu of $100,000. Two others who had returned to the scene with her had been detained for questioning, cops told CNS.
Witnesses were asked to call detectives at 213-972-1851.
[Update at 2:46 p.m.]: The District Attorney's office today announced that Chavez, who it says did not have a drivers license, was charged with "two felony counts of vehicular manslaughter."
The office ID'd the victims as Randall Milton and Teryl Sageser , both 51.
Chavez faces nearly five years behind bars if she's convicted. The office recommended $100,000 bail. She was expected to be arraigned downtown today.
