Eric Garcetti Takes Narrow Fundraising Lead Over Wendy Greuel In Race For L.A. Mayor

Councilman Eric Garcetti has edged into a narrow fundraising lead over his top rival, Controller Wendy Greuel, in the race for L.A. mayor.

The two candidates have been neck-and-neck all year. But in reports disclosed this afternoon, Garcetti announced that he had brought in $664,000 over the last three months, to Greuel's $593,000.

That puts Garcetti very narrowly ahead for the campaign, with $2,874,000 to Greuel's $2,802,000.

Bill Carrick, Garcetti's consultant, said that his fundraising was impressive in light of the fact that he took two weeks off for Navy Reserve training in August.

"We're gonna have the resources to build a strong campaign," Carrick said.

Other contenders trailed significantly behind the two frontrunners. Councilwoman Jan Perry raised $157,000 last quarter, bringing her total for the campaign to $1.3 million. Emanuel Pleitez, who recently entered the race, posted his first tally of $110,000. Trailing the top four was ex-radio host Kevin James, who brought in $57,000, for a campaign total of $275,000.

Rick Caruso is the sole remaining wild card in the race. The mall developer has not opened a campaign committee or raised any money, but he has worked behind the scenes to assemble a campaign team should he decide to run. He has until Nov. 10 to make his intentions known.

In the race for L.A. city attorney, incumbent Carmen Trutanich outraised opponent Mike Feuer last quarter, $223,000 to $147,000. However, Feuer has been raising money for the race since last year and has raised $802,000 overall.

And finally, some weird news. L.A. Dragnet noted yesterday that most of the 1,000 or so people who are "talking about" Trutanich's campaign on Facebook happen to live in Tanzania. Today, they've migrated to Dhaka, Bangladesh.

We've reached out to the Trutanich campaign for an explanation and haven't heard back. We can guess that he's purchasing Facebook likes, just as his D.A. campaign purchased YouTube views, But we'd also kind of like to think that there's a huge groundswell of support for his campaign in Bangladesh.

These numbers don't mean anything. Once the public finds out that Wendy Greuel's chief advisor doesn't pay his taxes, and she looks the other way, who has the most money won't matter.
