Porn's Anti-Condom Camp Backed By Los Angeles Times, Daily News!?

An industry known for its strange just got some even stranger bedfellows.

The adult biz's campaign against condoms on-set was endorsed overnight by the Los Angeles Times and the L.A. Daily News, the first and third largest publications in town (LA Weekly doesn't publish political endorsements).

In fact, you could say the campaign against county ballot measure B, which would require permits and condoms in most of L.A. County, scored a trifecta of sorts:

The Daily News and the next big publication in town, the Long Beach Press-Telegram, are sister papers that have the same endorsements.

The industry has resisted mandatory condom rules, saying that consumers won't buy condom porn -- and that its regular STD tests for performers works (a point that can certainly be debated).

In saying no to county enforcement of condoms, the Times failed to acknowledge that this is already the law, according to California workplace safety officials (a fact noted in the paper's past coverage of the topic).

The state says federal law intends to protect workers from exposure to blood-borne pathogens. However, California doesn't have the resources to put prophylactic police on every set.

In spearheading Measure B, which will be on next month's ballot, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation has argued that what it really wants is for local officials to do their jobs.

The city of L.A. recently passed a similar law but has yet to figure out how to enforce it. And therein lies the rub -- and the crux of the Times' argument:

... It's impossible to predict the results of passage. Measure B then falls into the category of "Let's pass it and see what happens." That's a bad way to make law because it puts government, or voters, on a track toward regulating all kinds of conduct without any hope of enforcing the requirements fairly and equally, and that in turn undermines the power of government.

On Twitter last night opponents of the measure were elated:

That is what we got here to defend the adult industry ? that whinning ass, Mr Whiteacre? Come on dude? Stop fighting with every newspaper editor in the state and here in LA. Next you will be fighting with TV journalist.  just stop it !   you are making the adult industry look like a bunch of little children and not like adults.

Like prop 35, if we already have laws that cover these issues, WHY do we need yet another law? How many duplicate laws are necessary to protect victims of sex trafficking or people in the porn industry from sexually transmitted diseases? And if we are going to attempt to stop sexually transmitted diseases within the porn community, WHY on earth do we allow cops to CONFISCATE the condoms from 'suspected prostitutes' to use as evidence against them? As reported in July just prior to the World AIDS conference, Los Angeles is one of the four cities cited as allowing this unconscionable action.  Because apparently it is okay for prostitutes to get AIDS and die? Is that what we are saying with these schizophrenic laws? Or would the  intent  of the mandatory condom use law be to confiscate condoms from porn stars and charge them with 'possessing the intent to commit' prostitution? Maybe we ought mandate condom use for all gays? Aren't they supposedly still spreading AIDS?

Not to mention that the primary vectors of ALL sexually transmitted diseases are high school and college age people- perhaps we need a mandatory condom law for them? Oh, that's right! High school students aren't supposed to be having sex....

Perhaps the LA Times and the Daily News realize that making MORE of the same laws only costs more money for enforcement - although I am disappointed that the Daily News endorsed Prop 35... would that be because they don't accept that the greatest predator faced by sex workers is a LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER who uses the laws to extort us for sex, money and information?  How many cases of cops raping prostitutes does it take for them to understand that the laws give cops that power? I guess they are willing to accept a certain amount of police abuse and corruption in order to advance their religious agenda. Wonder how many Rodney King beatings  would be acceptable  in order to reduce violence in the inner city?  http://www.policeprostitutionandpolitics.com/pdfs_all/PDFS%20for%20Maxine%20Prop%2035/PROP_35_FINAL3.pdf

This bill would severely impact every small porn production company in L.A. because of the permit fees attached to enforcing the bill.  People think porn is all huge companies that make millions, and that is so not true.  A lot of people are like my husband and me, refugees from the mainstream film industry who are making indie movies about kinky sex.  C'mon LAWeekly, stand up on the side of small businesses and endorse NO ON MEASURE B.

@pornlaw Notice how he writes "Anti-Condom" not "Anti-Mandatory Condom"

@mrwhiteacre On top of that, it's a headline. You can't get the nuance of two sides of an argument in a headline.

@dennisjromero @mrwhiteacre Should question "Why is this on the ballot this year, AHF trying both primary & general?" http://t.co/L7P2ByJs

@mrwhiteacre Correct again. My laptop is barely enough to defend me against your formidable stature

@dennisjromero I'm not the one so butt-hurt that he had to follow me to twitter to continue this nonsense. Grow up, Dennis, or grow a pair.

@dennisjromero You spit vile names at ME in a public LA Weekly comment thread from the safety of your fucking computer.

@mrwhiteacre I'm not passing judgement on what or what was not demonstrated.

mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero NO, I've DEMONSTRATED that Shelley Lubben is a liar AND YOU DID TOO, quite reluctantly, it would seem.

mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero You say I've "called ex performers the most vile things because they're now not with your program." (cont'd)

@dennisjromero The what was the "true humanitarian" line about?

@mrwhiteacre Classic. I never said you did #readingisfundamental indeed

@dennisjromero I don't wish anything bad for you either -- I said I don't care one way or the other. #ReadingIsFundamental

mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero I call a spade a spade. You want to defend Shelley Lubben? I presented you with facts showed you documents u refused to run.

@mrwhiteacre Like the true humanitarian you are. I don't wish anything bad for you. Keep up the good fight.

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero I don't CARE what you think, Dennis. I don't care if you live or die. You're nothing to me. YOU came here to argue WITH ME!

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero If you can't tell the difference, then that's yet one more reason why you're not fit to be published anywhere.

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero My contempt for the Lubbens is justified, and my indignation is righteous indignation.

dennisjromero
dennisjromero

@mrwhiteacre You've called ex performers the most vile things because they're now not with your program

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero Yes, when someone publicly accuses me of things I did not do & then drags a friend's name through the dirt, I call them on it

dennisjromero

@dennisjromero you should take your own advice from the last post and bow out again with your tail between your legs

@dennisjromero I'm taking the heat right now -- and making you look like an idiot. You're the one resorting to rude insults.

dennisjromero

@mrwhiteacre thanks man I'm devastated by the judgement of someone of your accomplishment

@dennisjromero The appearance of balance does not equal insight, Dennis. That's the tragedy of your writing career. Little depth

@mrwhiteacre you literally spit arguments at critics in the street w/ anger and contempt can't take the heat #pussy

@mrwhiteacre The wrong guy who has covered this extensively and received praise and criticism from both sides?

mrwhiteacre

@seksi @dennisjromero He's the wrong guy for that kind of reporting.

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero I guess headlines are only valid when they suit your bias.

mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero No, Dennis you have a HUGE problem when you go mano-a-mano. You bring a knife to a gunfight.

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero I'm not crying foul about your lack of etiquette, I'm pointing out that you're incapable of defending your positions. #fail

dennisjromero
dennisjromero

@mrwhiteacre So I guess that makes you a featherweight if you're crying foul after debating someone of my lowly stature

dennisjromero
dennisjromero

@mrwhiteacre You're right. To be fair, what I do is not rocket science. However, I have no problem going mano-a-mano

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero You're an intellectual lightweight. I've seen you do demonstrate it repeatedly. In writing.

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero The truth is, you're neither right nor logical nor reasonable, AND you can't out-argue me so you cry bully. You're the #pussy

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero If someone can't answer hard questions, they shouldn't be debating, and they damn sure shouldn't be a public figure.

mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero There;s a difference between actually researching a story objectively by examining FACTS, and cribbing someone else's title

@mrwhiteacre There's a difference between being right / logical / reasonable and being a bully

dennisjromero

@mrwhiteacre I don't feel bullied by you. I said you're an intellectual bully. I've seen you do it to others. On video

mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero I'm sorry you feel so bullied and intimidated by intellectualism, Dennis, and by logic. No wonder you prefer sensationalism.

dennisjromero
dennisjromero

@mrwhiteacre intellectual bully concerned with sensationalism and "vicious" arguments when u face someone your own size. #funny

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero Pitifully, yes. I rebutted your point and you were mum.

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero It's a critique of your ethics and intelligence.

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero My point is that you cannot even defend your positions, you just deflect. That's not a critique of your journalism.

mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero You need someone to tell you, that's for sure.

dennisjromero

@mrwhiteacre I don't need you to tell me how to do journalism

dennisjromero
dennisjromero

@mrwhiteacre I have no problem dealing with your "argument." I addressed it (above).

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero And once again you shift the focus from yourself without addressing my argument.

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero I'm an advocate, Dennis, not the independent journalist you're supposed to be.

dennisjromero
dennisjromero

@mrwhiteacre You don't seem to mind headlines or "sensationalist" stories when they go your way

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero That was PRECISELY my point about the sensational headlines you used as the SOURCE for your bullshit claims about Mr Marcus.

dennisjromero
dennisjromero

@mrwhiteacre And is anti-condom since a vast majority of American straight porn eschews them. Period.

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero Are Hollywood movies "anti-condom" Dennis? I haven't seen them in a lot of movies?

mrwhiteacre
mrwhiteacre

@dennisjromero So, the absence of inclusion of a thing = opposition to that thing? Really?

dennisjromero
dennisjromero

@mrwhiteacre I'm not going to abide by your spin. You've had plenty of platforms to get your own message across.
