Sixth Street Bridge Design Is Way Cool

City officials today announced that, after an international competition, the firm HNTB has been chosen to design a replacement for the crumbling Sixth Street Bridge. And boy, is their vision cool. (See photos, above and after the jump):

Now, you might say, fair enough, but wouldn't it better to save this beautiful, iconic structure leading to L.A.'s true Eastside.

It would. In a video announcing the design choice, city Councilman Jose Huizar said he's "a preservationist at heart."

But city officials warn that the bridge is suffering from concrete rot and that, as Huizar said, it's "in danger of collapsing" should a "significant" earthquake hit.

Not good.

HNTB, which designed the Colorado Street Bridge in Pasadena 100 years ago, says this one will include a bike path, park and arts plaza. (Read more here).

Enter $400 million of your money, the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project, and this awesome design.

The bridge itself will be a destination point.
