DUI Checkpoint Cheat Sheet For The Weekend: Look Out Marina Del Rey, Boyle Heights

The holiday season is just getting started, and the LAPD is ready for your drunk self.

It has been pointed out that the department seems to rarely conduct DUI checkpoints in whiter, Westside communities, so we'll give it credit for tonight's drunk dragnet: It's near Marina Del Rey.

Alas, there's also a DUI "saturation patrol" this weekend on the Eastside. Details:


Tonight from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. there will be a DUI checkpoint at Lincoln Boulevard and Maxella Avenue near Marina Del Rey.

Tomorrow from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. cops will be geared up and on "saturation patrol" for drunks behind the wheel in the LAPD's Hollenbeck Division area, which includes Boyle Heights and El Sereno.

Though the High Court ruled that DUI checkpoints are constitutional in Michigan v. Sitz, one would have to be quite daft to not recognize the blatant Fourth Amendment violation inherent in such an operation. As Justice Brennan noted in his dissent, "By holding that no level of suspicion is necessary before the police may stop a car for the purpose of preventing drunken driving, the Court potentially subjects the general public to arbitrary or harassing conduct by the police."
